My Top 10 Best and Worst Episodes of Season 8

I'm one of the few who actually like this episode. I think the main reason why I don't dislike this episode as others do is because i'm generally not affected by character abuse in SB and tv shows overall as long as it's funny or provides some sort of entertainment. (for the most part, while there still may be some instances where i am affected) I guess I did kinda feel bad for Squidward, but it just didn't affect me in a way that made me downright hate the episode.

It also does have some good qualities like the different environment for an episode, the hilarious dynamic of SpongeBob and Squidward, and I even found this to be one of Patrick's better appearances. In other episodes he's just not as funny but I liked him in this one more.

Not an amazing episode by all means, but I certainly will say that I do enjoy watching it as a rerun and it's overall pretty good if you ask me.

Smoothe Jazz at Bikini Bottom sucks, it's terrible, It's both a squid torture and patricks a jerk episode, and they are done WRONG. Next to nothing in this is funny and this is the worst season 8 episode IMO.

Even beyond the Squidward abuse (which, gonna be honest, by the end he deserved), I'm just offended by the behavior of all the characters at a concert. You pull any of those stupid stunts in real life and you'd be arrested without a second thought, and rightfully so. It's incredibly rude to the performer and distasteful and aagh I just loathe this episode.

#3 Worst - Planet of the Jellyfish
"SpongeBob and Sandy battle an evil jellyfish who have cloned other Bikini Bottomites."
Episode 169b - Writers: Luke Brookshier, Marc Ceccarelli & Doug Lawrence
I had to watch this episode more times than any other on the list. It's not that I was conflicted on where I was going to put it, rather, the episode confused me. A lot. Even then I still can't pinpoint what's wrong with the episode because of how different it is. There isn't an easy-to-find story or character issue, lack of jokes or focus, or anything bothersome... or any complaints to rebuttal. In fact the episode's reception is overwhelmingly positive and frankly I find it easier to pinpoint what it did well.

There's lots of things I'd like to praise about it. I want to like how well the team-up between SpongeBob and Sandy showcased their abilities and showed lots of enjoyable interaction. I want to like it's slow but suspenseful build-up, starting it off intentionally vague but later finding out what the heck is happening at the same time as the characters. I want to enjoy the action-packed climax of defeating the alien race with mayonnaise of all things, and the legitimate terror leading up to it. I want to enjoy how much fun sci-fi parodying there is here. And I want to enjoy all the jokes it threw into the mix. It had some of the most quotable moments in the season, from the jellion chocking on popcorn, to "I hate mayonnaise... and mustard," to the part where Sandy was tickling SpongeBob as a test, and especially the fourth-wall gag of "Eleven Minutes Later."

Yet still I can't seem to feel anything but confuzzled when watching it and I couldn't understand why. But now I think I got it.

The episode itself doesn't know what it wants to be.

All those positive comments I gave it are crammed into a tight eleven minutes. Unlike something like Gone which went all-out with how terrifying SpongeBob's slow descent into insanity is, this episode didn't nearly go far enough with it, not going past vagueness to make room for it's jokes. It's not like the jokes tie into the story very well either, most of them seem so randomly inserted, and the timing is so inappropriate that it ends up taking me out of the story. It's stuck between being the happy-go-lucky side of SpongeBob's delusions with Sandy and condiments, and the terrifying side of it trying to make it a serious end-of-the-world story leading up to literally saving the earth, and I don't think it ended up doing well with either. Disturbing visuals may have been appropriate here but it hardly even did that, yet it still tried to fool you with eerie music throughout. Just pick one please. Is the Invasion of the Body Snatchers reference throughout a parody or a flat-out reenactment of it? Because I can't tell. I don't even have clue what even happened.
Why this episode :(

#3 Best - Oral Report
"SpongeBob is nervous about giving an oral report in Boating School."
Episode 157b - Writers: Casey Alexander, Zeus Cervas & Dani Michaeli
Maybe I could blame that guy for it's negative reaction as of late, but that wouldn't be fair and wouldn't be addressing the issue. So instead... I'm gonna be rebuttalling complaints! :P

It seems the main issue with the episode for many is the lack of stakes. It's been considered pointless and repetitive due to its focus on SpongeBob trying and failing to get his driver's license for the bajillionth time. Sure, I agree that when even episodes like Bumper to Bumper flat-out give him it to take it away for no justified reason, there's almost no chance he'll get his license in the future... but I don't get it here. It doesn't even take deep analysis to figure out there's almost no focus on it. Look at the plot synopsis. SpongeBob is nervous about giving an oral report. It explores the other situations that the location can offer, it gave us something different. And there's plenty of tension leading to the big ending of the speech. From the moment he initially finds out how bad it can be if he fails to succeed when the patrons were beating up Squidward, to Patrick throwing out mean-spirited jokes about "preparation" in rapid succession, to the mental breakdown when called up to talk, the conflict is actually really high and really interesting.

That brings me to the other main complaint, Patrick. He was horrible to SpongeBob, that's a fact, but what it does well is that it's implied that from his point of view, he's trying to help by showing how bad it could be so that he can overcome it with less fear. It's like those harsh exercise trainers to get you to man up, he explicitly states that "people won't sit through your boring speech" and "you should be prepared for worse." It's also incredibly fun to watch with how unpredictable and random the ways he goes about it. Can't think of something over-the-top enough? Keep topping it! Throw pillows at him! Toss him on a treadmill! Give him an imitation of Puff giving a detention slip! I appreciate how cartoony and rapid that they are, and it helps because it only exaggerates the situation and brings the stakes even higher when we figure out it's unintentionally made the anxiety worse.

The anxiety can get really repetitive but that's easily my favorite thing about the episode, it's as relatable as the show's ever been. It might depend on your own experiences, but at least for me and many other people, the thought of talking in front of even a moderately sized group can be devastating. The mere possibility of screwing up and damaging your reputation can gets you really nervous to the point where it's almost exactly like SpongeBob's breakdown--heat racing, stuttering, flat-out running away--it's realistic. It's only when the problem's put into perspective and you're not overthinking it that it can be overcome, and that's what it does. He overcomes his fear. After calming down and realizing how big a deal he was making of it he's able to speak it perfectly. It leaves the episode off with both a good feeling and even solutions to help out with the issue in real life, and honestly just thinking back to the episode has been helpful in even everyday conversations. It's rather admirable and strong while still being hilarious and entertaining.
I actually really like this episode :xP:
