Roadie, where's Reef Blower?
P.S. Episodes under 5 minutes are considered as "shorts" and will not be classified as an episode. Therefore it will not have the rights to be reviewed.

Yeah.

Anyways, on my S1 list Hall Monitor and Plankton are right next to each other Plankton being higher go figure :P

Okay, so as I did my routine of analyzing a new episode usually I took out points on what I expected. In Sandy's Rocket I expect big things. Supposedly, it has a good storyline and a couple of classic Cheeks one-liners. It also has Patrick, so usually that's enough to guarantee a classic. 11 minutes later, I was stumped. I want to give it and B+ rating because of the things I've mentioned before, but it feels unfair because ... it's not as enjoyable as I thought it would be. The writers didn't really take all the means of the premise to their full advantage which makes the episode feels empty and short-lived. I guess it's the matter of the conflict, as all. It really is rather forgettable.

Hopefully, the next episode would be more memorable and is able to use it's full potential.

Nope.

I couldn't see anything from this episode. It has no point to teach like Ripped Pants, it's not an introduction to a show figure like Help Wanted, and the noise it makes isn't a cool rave for dance parties like Jellyfish Jams, it makes squeaky noises. You know that squeak coming out of the jumping lamp before every Pixar movie? This is the 11 minute youtube version of that. Partnered with a storyline that is mediocre at best. If a character's is trying to have paranoia over something, it should be something miniscule or important. So we can enjoy the sympathy and hilarity. This episode failed hard as the paranoia fell flat on it's face making it borderline eerie.

Am I the only one who likes Mr. Krabs going insane in Squeaky Boots? I guess I find it funny when characters go mad so suddenly and for something so trivial. :P I still agree that Squeaky Boots isn't a very good episode, though.

I take back what I said months ago. It isn't stale at all. It's actually quite satisfying to watch. The idea IS stale, but the execution didn't feel empty. Which is the complete opposite if the previously reviewed Sandy's Rocket. I was quite please at how this episode works out. It's pacing is quick and the story was made rather entertaining, even though it had a simple and stale idea. It also provides a lesson that didn't influence the episode too much (take note Ripped Pants). A lesson that would be develop into a BETTER episode 2 seasons later. Yeah, we are probably not in the most satisfying life situation, but the algae isn't always greener on the other side. Be grateful for what you have.

Okay, so the initial idea was, stale. Opposite day was a really silly idea for a holiday to invent (plot wise). But the execution is near flawless. There are great moments in this episode. Patrick and Squidward perform to their maximum. It's weird, because so far, I've enjoyed the 2 neighbors more than SB. But the episode proves it. Patrick was funny and Squidward was acting brilliantly. They were certainly moderating their acts (otherwise they may end up like Krabs in Squeaky Boots). While SpongeBob carries the plot. Making sure that it vaguely turned the table around Squidward without being noticeable at all. So yeah, this was a great episode. Mainly, because of the execution and 3 great characters involved in developing the story.

What I love about this episode, is that it gave an environment to make sure that almost every character in this show got room for an act. The environment being a talent show. The talent show was superb. It was very entertaining from the very start (Patrick laughing for miniscule stuff). Every character pulled out a great act (which is terrible in reality). How they managed to entertain us using a very different format at that time just shows how versatile and imaginative. the writers are. The sweetest gem of them all, is obviously the ending. Squidward's arrogance punished by hilarity. Oh, I wish I can date this episode.

This episode entertains for the sheer joy of it. But it's impressively clever. It lures the audience into thinking that it's going to force a cheesy "Anyone can change with the help of a friend" moral. I mean the first part of the episode is just teeming with sweet moments.

And then it pulls out and does just the opposite. Plankton NEVER changed. As I said, very clever indeed. Plankton's change was the key. The writers made it SO convincing we actually thought he did change. Even in the last few minutes when he says "But then you showed me friendship. And I realise ... that's all I really wanted." But then came the abrupt ending that shocked the audience. All these times we thought that the show may have lost it's villain was wrong. I'll be honest, I don't like how it just goes abrupt, but I am deeply impressed at how convincing this episode was.

I can see why so many people love Culture Shock, and I think there are many good things about the episode, but I've never liked it because of the ending. I think the Bikini Bottomites were too harsh to Squidward. Yeah, he deserved some karma for how he was behaving (and trust me I'm all for Squidward getting karma when he deserves it), but that seemed a little bit too mean. The problem is, it doesn't feel like karma, it feels like mean-spiritedness and it makes me really uncomfortable to watch it. If they'd just toned it down a bit I would have liked the episode more. Plus, I never got the whole everyone-cheering-at-SpongeBob-mopping thing. I just... I just don't find it funny. I think it would have been a lot better if instead of mopping SpongeBob had done something actually impressive, like maybe one of the ideas that Squidward discarded, and then everyone loved that. It would have been funnier and it would have been better karma for Squidward. Anyway, I really want to like Culture Shock because I love the idea of it and, like I said, there are a lot of good things about the episode, but the ending kills it for me.

F.U.N isn't the greatest episode, but it is a clever one with a great twist at the end. What's interesting to me is that Plankton did seem to genuinely enjoy SpongeBob's company, but in the end, he liked being evil more. He just wasn't willing to change, even if it cost him a friend. That's actually kind of dark, isn't it? But it is a good, refreshing moral as opposed to the usual "everyone can change they just need wuv".

Usually, episodes that rely on visual gags suffered. And is less-likely to be opted as favourite episode ahead of episodes that rely on good one-liners. That's why in this list, Plankton! is second best (a fantastic achievement) and Jellyfish Jam is nowhere near the top 10 and with the elimination chamber open wide, JJ would most likely be relegated. This episode however, isn't bad at all. Even though the episode heavily relies on visual laughs. It's a risky premise that could be a suicide note being written on the wall if the visuals don't land. It could easily sunk, but it didn't. The visual gags were strong in this episode and it is shocking how much it had worked.

The best gag in this episode is the measuring fish. Anchor after anchor after anchor pummeling him. Poor guy :(

It's good. But I feel that it has potential yet to be executed. It's rather uneventful, or shall I say. It doesn't really have a single focus on visual gags or audio gags. I think this episode had a couple of one-line chuckles. Toulouse-Lautrec was hilarious once I found out who he is. The watermelon gag was quite funny as well. And the game at the beginning was somehow quite comical. So there are funny moments. But it's not really flawless. Patrick had an inconsistent approach, this time. SpongeBob's lines was a bit of a miss hit attempt. And I don't like the idea of how SpongeBob fails to acknowledge that Squidward isn't dead, even though Squidward had tell him so. So yeah, it wasn't a bad episode. Oh no, it was VERY decent. Just not a gem.

I have to say, Roadie, this is a cool idea and a great list you have here! Also, I totally understand why you don't care for episodes that are based on morals. In my opinion, they're good for kids because they can learn something from them, but when I watch a cartoon (especially SpongeBob), I just want to have, you know, fun!

This episode had a creative and relatable storyline where it focused on Pearl's high school prom. Except, this episode focused on how high school can suck. And how everyone could hate you. Yet it manages to portray that it is, without a shadow of a doubt, fun. So the storyline is quite good. The execution needed a bit more to desire, though. Sadly, it relies on visual gags. The SpongeBob dummy is FAR from a reliable source of gag. It even disappointed a little. Funny one-liners are disappointing, rare and really forgettable in this one. As much as I like doing 'The Sponge' or how relatable the storyline is, I can't ignore the huge hole that is the episode's execution. Which leaves A LOT to be desired.

Employee Of The Month is a really unique episode that isn't solid at all. It's predictable and not very humorous. But it's VERY interesting. As you know, I am an absolute sucker for mind games. In which 2 characters will make constant mocking of each other until one fell for the psychological warfare and snapped out. Why, the mind games in this episode is SO intense, it changed the 2 central characters. Squidward, who used to be complacent and uncaring starts getting incredibly competitive. The usually fair, gentle and happy-go-lucky SpongeBob turns into a psychotic and aggresive over-achiever. In the end, this episode makes itself incredibly intense and unique with 2 basic character changes. But it discarded the solidity of plotline and memorability while doing so.

I'm giving it extra marks for being so bold and inventive. But it lacks solidity to make it an A-class episode.
