What's more/less popular than SpongeBob?

I would dare to say SpongeBob is more popular than almost every cartoon today. Simply because of international viewership, ten millions of people from various countries watched SpongeBob at some point. Cartoons like Adventure Time or Gravity Falls, although popular in the US barely makes it to the international stage. Other contender would be those old Disney/Looney Toons/Tom & Jerry cartoons from the 30s-50s, because of how they're syndicated, those cartoons probably are still aired in many different stations around the world until today. Also I excludes Animes.

I never watched Game of Thrones, simply because it doesn't interest me. My favorite shows that aren't animated are Mad Men and The Office. I my favorite animated shows are, among many others, SpongeBob and Sheep in the Big City.

Sheep in the Big City isn't popular, unfortunately. It's such a wonderful show. It's one of the most original, fresh, creative, entertaining, and funny shows I have ever watched. Sadly, it's one of the most forgotten shows of all time.

I tried out a little of this and put a few similar things together. So I just compared some recent cartoons of the three networks, just to see. There were certain shows I excluded since they threw off everything.

Oh, and here's SpongeBob put next to a few shows I think are or are becoming becoming global icons. It still comes out on top.

Although maybe that's inaccurate since not everyone's gonna capitalize or use full names...

Conclusions:
Yeah I think it's safe to say it's not going down anytime soon although the things it doesn't show is how many people like it or not, although looking at the last chart, I think by 2017 MLP will catch up to it. And to Prez's liking Wander is definitely down in the dumps.

Apparently, Family Guy seems to have all those other shows beat, which sucks for me because...well, let's just say I don't care for that show. This matches up with my own personal experience, too, because the only cartoon people (and not just the more nerdy ones, I'm talking most of the student body) at my school usually talk about besides SpongeBob itself is Family Guy. Simpsons would be somewhere between the two. There are kids at my school that like The Simpsons, but it doesn't come up often.

As for MLP...I don't know, as much as I like the show, I can't see it go beyond its Internet cult following because most of society is still stuck in the "boys must like manly things and girls must like girly things or else you're gay" mindset. (Some of the more "open" kinds of bronies also might, and still do, turn people off the show.) This is contrast to something like SpongeBob or Pokemon, which have more of a universal appeal and don't have creepy fan stereotypes surrounding them. (I'm not saying I agree with these stereotypes, but you can't ignore they exist.)

A lot of people do seem to forget that SpongeBob, like classic Disney movies and the cartoons you mentioned--Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, etc.--have a more global reach. I still remember that story of Stephen Hillenburg finding bootleg SB backpacks somewhere in Southeast Asia and when our little yellow sponge was used as a mascot for the Arab Spring revolution. Very few cartoons, or fictional characters in general, have that kind of reach across different countries' pop cultures.

SpongeBob honestly is nowhere near as popular as it used to be, if I have to say the brutal truth.
Things like Frozen have taken over lol
Older SB episodes averaged around 2 million/episode. Now they average around 4 million/episode.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think you'd be surprised that SpongeBob could be more popular than MANY other popular shows and movies out there like Frozen, or Adventure Time. Think about it, SpongeBob has been around for so many freakin years which means that both old and new generation of people know about him. And I'm not talking about which one is more popular NOW, I'm talking about which one is more popular in general.

If Frozen is more popular than SpongeBob in general, I'd find it hard to believe that it can gain more popularity in 1 or 2 years than SpongeBob can in 15 years... =/ And it's not one of Nick's shows that is only played once every 5,672 years, it's a show that's played 42,009,878 times a day :P It's basically Nick's mascot.

Also, think about this, would you be more amazed if someone doesn't know who SB is, or if someone doesn't know what Frozen is? IDK about you, but I would drop dead to the floor if someone in my school told me they don't know who SB is.

Sure certain shows and movies might be more popular and talked about more than SB at this moment in time, but in general? I don't think so.

An interesting question would be if Dora is more popular..... -_~ Or even WWE...... Maybe Fruity Pebbles are more popular too.... What am I saying :P

SpongeBob is definitely more popular than Totally Spies. Totally Spies isn't the most interesting show but does have interesting characters (esp. Clover).

Incorrect. SpongeBob was never as popular as Lion King or Little Mermaid or whatever was the most popular Disney movies at the time, things like Frozen have always been more popular.

But the fanbase that SpongeBob's had from the beginning has still stayed large, hence it being the #1 movie in America on its premiere week.

Really, Little Mermaid and Lion King were more popular? I can somewhat understand that, but still.
