Wow it looks so fresh. The colors don't look smooth but that's justified as the show still seems to have that in Season 11 with the colors not looking perfectly flat on animated parts (I think that's a part of animation)

Anyways this might be a bit off topic but I discovered a YouTube Video of a workprint of the SpongeBob episodes "A Friendly Game/Sentimental Sponge" and it shows at the end of the workprint there are blank title cards and timecards plus blank end credits/opening credits and intro assets that look like the type of prints that foreign dubs like the French dub would use. (translating episode credits and timecards along with title cards and the intro). Anyone believe that?

Yeah the colors might just be a part of the animation. On the side of the workprints/assets of "A Friendly Game/Sentimental Sponge", that is a good sign that there is a workprint, so maybe that hints that they have they still have the raw studio prints for the rest of the episodes (I'm assuming).

Can you link the video?

Edit: Never mind, I found the video.
Here are the 4K title cards from the thread.

Someone at Nick, we need this really badly for other episodes :P

I have a ton of episodes recorded from Nicktoons UK with clean prints, I can share them on Google Drive if you want

Sure, thank you!

I have a copy of Nature Pants/Opposite Day in HD, downsampled to SD. I can tell it is the HD scan because the grain more detailed. The overall detail is better than the original PAL SD scan. The only problem is my copy has a pretty low bitrate. Also, it has the interlacing issue that the HD prints of S1 suffer from

I went to the Swedish version of the Nickelodeon website, and apparently they have some S7 episodes and Help Wanted/Reef Blower/Tea at the Treedome. The quality is good, the only issue is that the video seems to be zoomed, or cropped just a bit, but it's solid overall. Maybe they'll add newer episodes as time goes on.

This could seriously be a good business decision for Nick. Just remake your old episodes in HD and upload them to YouTube or sell them on DVD, older fans will come back for nostalgia and new fans for the improved graphics. Win-Win.

That will be a great business decision for Nickelodeon.

Season 1 can be upscaled to as much as 4K, if they still have the film print/original cels (Which I'm assuming they do). Seasons 2-8 can't be in HD, since they were produced in 480p, but they can have some nice looking 480p like the episodes on the Nautical Nonsense and Sponge Buddies DVD, or more preferably to me, Nickelodeon can upload the digital computer episode files/original studio prints on YouTube, in its original aspect ratio and quality, if they still have them (Hopefully).

Is it me or do the the 'clean' copies have some sort of white alias on the contours? The nasty copies probably still have it, it's just harder to see with all the other artifacts on screen

Also, I heard there is a way to completely remove dot crawl, I can post how to if you wanna know

True, I've noticed this with Season 2 especially.

Somebody should contact nick and ask why they're still airing rotten copies of episodes when we're about to hit the 2020s decade

I wish that the high-res scan of the panning show title was found before they updated the intro. The crew did what they could to clean the SD one up, but some spots where edits were made are very obvious, and there are other spots where it's a bit pixelated from being upscaled.

They probably don't have most of the episode cels, as a good number have been sold. They may have the film, though.

I'm not sure which program(s) seasons 2 and 3 were animated in, but I think 4-8 was all in Toon Boom, which is vector-based. They would just need to double check that the background scans are high enough resolution, and if so then they could re-render the episodes at 1080p SD (1440x1080)... if they still have the TB files.

Might be worth asking Adam Paloian about. He mentioned a while back that he was poking Nickelodeon's archives about such things.

Oh yeah, I did see online art auctions of Season 1's cels, so that's out of the question, so the film print could be our best bet.

As far as Seasons 2-8 go, the crew might have all of the TB files, since you've showed that Adam Paloian says he was going through Nick's archives. This helped a lot, thanks! :)

Here's another dexter's episode, with some really bad dot crawl

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y35bGmEMsg0

Yes, this is from 2001

Here's an episode that's later in the season, the print is completely clean, aired in 2002, but made in 2001, according to the credits:

Here's an episode that's very clean, it makes the episode look so new for it's time! Yup, also from 2001, but the clear picture makes it look like it's from 2008!

Other classic cartoon network shows have the on and off VHS effect, I think there's also a few of Edd Ed N Eddy too, not sure if I can find the episodes

Are we gonna mention that Nicktoons UK airings of the SpongeBob episodes "A Friendly Game/Sentimental Sponge" have the entire episode appear washed out in color?

Not to mention that the French and German dubs of SpongeBob can look very smooth and HD even when in Nature Pants/Opposite Day, Survival of the Idiots/Dumped, The Algae's Always Greener/SpongeGuard on Duty, and The Original Fry Cook/Night Light (weird how the screenshots of those 2 on here look very clean)

Never knew about that, good to know that there's at least something.
