How is Good Neighbors dark?

If you read in between the lines, it is one of the darkest, most sadistic episodes of the whole show. Spongebob and Patrick are so oblivious to how much Squidward hates them that it becomes scary. Not to mention the ending of the episode was awfully frightening.

Well, I guess you have a point. I just thought their obliviosness was stupid rather than scary, but I can somewhat see where you are getting at.

Some of my dark episodes from the series include:

Sponge-cano!
Are You Happy Now?
Graveyard Shift
I Was A Teenage Gary
Dying For Pie
A Pal For Gary
Spongehenge
One Coarse Meal
Squidbob Tentaclepants
Squid's Visit
Nasty Patty
Rock Bottom
Ghost Host
Gone
Demoltiion Doofus

Wow, there are more dark episodes than I ever thought! ._.

Gone and Spongecano weren't very dark in my opinion.

Well, the beginning of Gone makes it seem like everyone in Bikini Bottom is missing and perhaps dead, which when you think about it is kind of dark. There's also SpongeBob's descent into insanity.

As for Sponge-cano, I haven't seen it yet, but from what I've heard it involves Squidward being sacrificed to a volcano. Sounds kind of dark if you ask me. :p

And am I the only one who doesn't consider Graveyard Shift dark? Really, what's so dark about that episode? So Squidward tells some scary story (that is way too silly to be scary anyway), big deal. @_@ I guess what everyone is referring to is how the story later appears to be real, but that doesn't last long as it's revealed quite quickly that SpongeBob and Squidward were just being paranoid. I don't know, I fail to see how it's dark.

Maybe it's because of Nosferatu at the end? That was only the last five seconds, though, it's a little strange to consider the whole episode dark because of a five-second scene at the very end.

wait do you mean literal darkness like no light or dark figurative?

Well, for Gone, the first half is pretty creepy if you think about it. I mean, Spongebob's waking up one day, only to find that he's the only one in Bikini Bottom, and there's no one. Not other person in sight (or in hearing). And the fact that Spongebob goes slowly insane is pretty disturbing if you think about it.

As for Sponge-Cano!, I find it a little dark because the premise of the episode is that a volcano is destroying Bikini Bottom, and the only way to (supposedly) stop it is to sacrifice the most depressed, miserable person in the city. If that's not dark enough, Squidward has been flanderized to the point where he acts like nothing good has EVER gone his way, and that his life is nothing but misery. I realize it sounds like Are You Happy Now?, but his misery here doesn't go to the same extent, though it's still a little uncomfortable.

Well, when I place Rock Bottom on the list, I was thinking of episodes that fall into the categories of dark OR creepy. The premise is a bit creepy, and the creatures of the dark are a bit scary. It's not one of the major contendors when it comes to dark/disturbing, but it's close.

Yes, but don't forget that little symbol they let slip past on the Good Neighbor club hats.

ILLUMINATI REFRENCES!

And thus, Cephalopod Lodge... was born.

I like Illuminati references in Cephalopod Lodge and Good Neighbors actually but I think these episodes are not for kids.

 Ummm... How are both episodes not appropriate for kids? Both episodes aren't even that disturbing (OHH has a point about sadism in GN), and I'm pretty sure kids from like, 5-7 aren't even going to get the reference.

I think they are not for kids because I think they will pretend to be Illuminati members or worship it, even though they don't get the reference.
