The episode came out when homophobia was still common, so I'm not surprised they were able to get away with making a joke about men looking ridiculous in makeup
Hmm. I'm inclined to think homophobia's true hey-day was prior to the 1960s. At the same time, I wouldn't say it is or isn't common now. It exists in pockets today just as much as it did 20 years ago.
No disrespect meant; just that your vantage point on history may need some adjusting. ;)
