SpongeBob UK Censorship

SpongeBob is mostly uncensored in the UK but some things have been censored. The censors seem to be heavier in season 1. Feel free to reply with any edits I missed. All cut scenes are in bold. (not including the character's bold names in the scripts)

Season 1:

Scaredy Pants:
  • Patrick: Okay, are you ready?
  • SpongeBob: [shows paper ghost] Remember, like this. [Patrick razors off SpongeBob's sides]
  • Patrick: Are you sure you want to do this?
  • SpongeBob: Shave me down, make me round! [Patrick razors off more and uses one piece to wipe off his sweat from his forehead]
  • Patrick: All right, let's get to it. [razors off more part. Later, SpongeBob is a round ghost]
  • SpongeBob: What do you think?
  • Patrick: Perfect.
This was possibly edited due to razor dangers. Likely the most time shaved in the series.

Jellyfish Jam:

Recently, parts of the dance sequence where the flashing lights are fastest have been slowed down/cut. The mix of slowing and cutting visuals means that no time was shaved, likely so the song does not jump.

Pizza Delivery:

  • Squidward: Work? [screen cuts to black] Oh, my aching tentacles!
This line has been cut in many different places, however the UK only cut it in recent airings, around late 2016.

Hooky:

  • Patrick: Cheesy. No danger here. Go on, try it.
  • SpongeBob: But, Mr. Krabs said...
  • Patrick: SpongeBob, let me ask you something. [shown with 9 hooks in his mouth and still has 1 in his hand] Does this look dangerous?
  • SpongeBob: [screams] Patrick, don't!
  • Patrick: Lighten up, will ya? Or do I have to eat all this cheese by mysel... [hooks pulls him up]
This was likely edited due to being the most dangerous part of the episode.

Gary Takes a Bath:

This episode was banned in the UK for a while, it started to air again in around 2009.

Jellyfish Hunter:

  • No Name: [breathing]
  • SpongeBob: [laughing nervously] Wrong number. [No Name has pliers and cuts the living room fuse and the lights go out. SpongeBob laughs nervously] I guess Gary forgot to pay the electric bill! [door opens and a small, black figure comes in] Gary, is that you? Gary?
This was not cut, but the fuse being cut was replaced with the outside of SpongeBob's house for unknown reasons. Possibly due to cutting the fuse being dangerous.

Out of the Picture:

  • Art Appraiser: Well, paintings can become much more valuable when the artist is no longer with us. You know. Out of the picture. [pretends to hang himself]
  • Mr. Krabs: Out of the picture, eh? I think I can arrange this.
This scene was cut for obvious reasons.

Also iirc there's a country that banned The Great Snail Race for animal-abuse, but doesn't give a crap about A Pal for Gary or Pet Sitter Pat.
Canada...

No, I'm not kidding. I live there and they never air it.

I remember watching it a long time ago but now, as the reruns air in production order, this episode (and its sister) are always skipped. Canada probably banned it because of animal abuse and I think Mid-Life Crustacean is banned because of that ending or the fact that an old man is "playing" with youngsters, which looks inappropriate.

I don't even remember since when they were banned, but I swear I saw both episodes on TV years ago.

Some of those cut lines were not the best lines in the show, to be certain; I recall thinking some of them were in poor taste when I watched those episodes. However, censoring them due to fear of copycat injuries... well, maybe people have less common sense then I like to think. It's a cartoon, for goodness' sakes. I suppose they'll be pulling all the Road Runner cartoons someday, because of all the gruesome injuries that Wile E. Coyote falls into.

It's funny, as soon as a saw that hanging scene, I had a feeling they wouldn't let it slide.

Oh, also, I'm pretty sure the close up shot of Spongebob and Patrick with no pupils from Whelk Attack is cut out in the UK.

Yes he is right. I find ridiculous that they banned TGSR because of animal abuse but Pet Sitter Pat ISN'T :sbangry:

You know, I appreciate that the music was moved so it didn't jump. That's some clean censoring right there.
BEST CENSORSHIP 10/10

Haven't seen that edit. Then again, I'm American.

We only "ship" SpongeBob and Squidward, not "censor" and "ship."
