Out of curiosity, can Squidward fight?

Growlie

Best Boy
Hearing what reviewers had said about Atlantis SquarePantis made me wonder something. When they talk about how the writers were glorifying Sandy during the fight scene they mention that Sandy and SpongeBob know Karate, Mr.Krabs was in the Navy and Patrick is a brawler, they never mention if Squidward knows or has any moves of his own. So this made me wonder if rather Squidward can fight, or If he's helpless and doesn't know any moves.

Pretty sure he beat the hell out of that guy trying to give him groceries in Squid Defense, and let's not forget all those restaurant owners in Spongebob, You're Fired.

I think that we never see Squiddy fighting much in the series, except for 'Squid Defence' as was mentioned.

Otherwise, I think he technically COULD, because he apparently was awesome with his karate move, but he is just not really a fighter and doesn't train and develope his skills in that area. He's also ver passive character. He'd rather just walk away. He never gets into brawls if he can help it. And when it happens, he's not expecting it and doesn't know how react.

The episode was great, and accurate - in that he perfected a move and successfully pulled it off when he was expecting to be attacked. He didn't evaluate the situation, though; so he was clearly acting in desperation/fear.
That is very cool about the episode, because while martial arts are awesome, they won't help you in a real situation if you haven't learned the difference between acting and reacting.. Assessing the situation correctly.

I'd say if he wanted to, he could kick some good butt. Of course, there's the episode Squid Defense that proves it very well. Squidward also fought Patrick in Wishing You Well. I forgot who 'won' that fight but whatever. I think Squidward could take his karate skills and cleverness to the next level with practice and more practice.

But yeah, I think Squidward can put up a fight when he is fighting under certain circumstances.

But then again, there are also instances where Squidward gets severely hurt himself (squid abuse) but technically, those weren't fights.

Exactly, if he'd bother to, he clearly could. But he just seems to NOT, and seems to get easily caught off gaurd. He seems to only get aggressive in any way when pushed to the point - in Squid Defense, out of fear - and in almost any other episode, just when someone (often SpongeBob) had really pushed him and then he yells or throws them out of his house.. Just look at what all he *actually* tollerates.

He seems to be a very non-confrontational creature, to me at least.. and fighting isn't a sport he'd enjoy as SB and Sandy do, so he doesn't bother to further himself in the area.

As someone mentioned about 'Wishing You Well', he fought with Pat, ultimately, but I don't remember that we saw anything about who won... but, either way, he did apparently throw some blows with Pat... and ultimately was still able to crawl out when Krabs pulled the bucket up. (Though I also can't recall Patrick looking particularly beat up either - so I guess the fight wasn't THAT brutal? But it was funny! I love how it started with shoving..!)

Yeah, you pretty much nailed it. And, I also realized that there was another fight between Pat and Squidward which was in the episode "Restraining Order". Not sure if you've seen it but here's the fight:

Bad quality, I know. But it was kinda more of a wrestling match then an actual fight. And here's the one from "Wishing You Well"

All you really see is shoving and then hear punching, then you see Patrick on top of Squidward

Come to think of it, they should make Squidward and Patrick fight more often. It's hilarious :P

It'd get overused though and then it wouldn't be funny anymore.

Oh, dear... I am in complete agreement with you! They are HILARIOUS when they're fighting! (I did see 'Restraining Order", I just didn't know the title - love the episode - and I totally forgot about Squidward and Pat's fight there - I've only seen it once and that's been a while.)

Thank you for sharing the clips.

Well, it won't be overused if they limit the amount of times they use it. Perhaps once per season.

I forgot about their fight in Restraining Order until now as well :P

Squidward's close to the only character in the show who'd rather avoid a conflict - one of the key reasons I like him so much

Which is why I've always been a little dubious as to whether his sin is actually "wrath" (both "wrath" and "pride" could fit him or Sandy).

Envy also suits Squidward to, as he's always jealous of Squilliam to.
