SpongeBob knew it was him as soon as he saw him with the mustache, so he tries to drive him nuts so he'll run away and not strangle him.

I think it's another instance of "Paper-Thin Disguise" as TV Tropes calls it- a disguises consisting solely of a single item, but fools people into thinking the person wearing the disguise is a different person.

At some point didn't he also say "Strangler- I mean bodyguard!"

This theory also applies to Spongebob's treatment of Plankton in "Welcome to the Chum Bucket," and his treatment of the Flying Dutchman in "Born Again Krabs."
Oh- right.

I agree that Spongebob didn't know, it was probably just him being comedically stupid as usual. Good theory however, if I were in that situation I would do that (if I was trapped in Spongebob, not if there was a serial killer on the loose in real life :P )

That's another reason I love that episode. You could go either way, where he either knows it's the Strangler and is chasing him away, or he doesn't know it's him, but he has a really weird lifestyle.

I don't think SpongeBob knew. He's extremely gullible. The bad disguise is to make it funny and very obvious to the audience that the Bodyguard is the Strangler.

The alternative interpretation of his character also makes it funny in a different way, and it could be interpreted as Spongebob ingeniously playing mind games with the criminal. I think it's a funny episode either way.

I think that would be a bit too cynical for SpongeBob. It's a common theme in the show that he takes everything at face value and is very easily tricked. There was no motivation for SpongeBob to pretend to be fooled by Robot Krabs or Mrs. Puff in a ski mask, for example, so if he didn't see through those obvious disguises it's likely enough he fell for the Strangler's fake moustache too.

And besides, the ending made it really clear that Spongebob really didn't know that he was The Tattletale Strangler regarding Spongebob's shocked reaction.

This alternative interpretation could also apply to Welcome to the Chum Bucket and Born Again Krabs. Maybe he has a defense mechanism to occasionally compensate for his lack of stregnth?
