Moody Gardens, Nickelodeon reveal first leading SpongeBob Squarepants Ice Sculpture at new holiday attraction

The first images of one of the main underwater characters in Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants brings animation to life as it features Patrick Star as a towering ice sculpture for the first time in a new holiday attraction. Moody Gardens and Nickelodeon have come together to create the Gulf Coast’s only holiday ice sculpture attraction featuring the world-renowned underwater characters from this hit television series. ICE LAND: Ice Sculptures with SpongeBob SquarePants will debut on Nov. 15, 2014 and offer a unique and interactive holiday experience through Jan. 4, 2015.

A portion of the Moody Gardens central parking lot is the staging ground for a 28,000 square-foot, climate-controlled tent that will be chilled to a frosty nine degrees to house the most spectacular carved ice attraction on the Gulf Coast. An internationally acclaimed team of 31 artisan ice carvers from Harbin, China, will take 900 tons of ice and transform it into SpongeBob SquarePants’ Bikini Bottom at holiday time, featuring SpongeBob, his pals and his neighborhood.

“My team and I are very excited for the opportunity to be the first artists to ever carve the characters from SpongeBob SquarePants from ice,” said Mr. Qiu Guanghui, captain of the VYA Ice Carving Team. “The precision required to create the exact features of the animated characters in these ice sculptures is among our greatest artistic challenges yet. We are honored to be able to show our work for Moody Gardens visitors in November.”

Guests will be on a real adventure as Plankton has another villainous plan up his sleeve. This time, not only does he want to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula, but he wants to ruin Christmas. Can SpongeBob save the holiday? Guests will find out as they witness the majestic marvels in ICE LAND’s SpongeBob SquarePants experience.

ICE LAND will be a frosty new addition to the Festival of Lights and other holiday attractions this year as Galveston makes its holiday transition into a Winter Wonder Island. Admission to the exhibit is $26.95 for adults, $21.95 for seniors and $15.95 for children, and will also be included in a Moody Gardens Value Pass that includes admission to the various Moody Gardens attractions and Festival of Lights for $59.95. A two-day pass is available for $79.95. Courtesy parkas will also be distributed to each guest. For a list of peak, non-peak and group blackout dates, visit www.moodygardens.com/holidayschedule. Guests can also visit www.moodygardens.com/icelandwebcam to view the live ICE LAND web cam for a behind-the-scenes look at the construction process, as well as the ice carvings over the next few months.

Ice sculptors create SpongeBob wonderland at Moody Gardens

GALVESTON - At Moody Gardens, staffers are donning parkas and knitted snow caps. Winter has come early.

It's a chilly 19 degrees in the enormous tent that fronts the entertainment complex. And it will only get colder when Ice Land, its $5-million holiday-themed attraction, opens to the public on Nov. 15.

Inside the 28,000-square-foot tent, professional ice carvers from Harbin, China, are working around-the-clock shifts to create elaborate ice sculptures from 900 tons of colored ice.

Using small chain saws, files and chisels, the Chinese men are sculpting the colorful underwater world of Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants.

One sculptor uses his chain saw to create a crescent shape out of a peach-colored slab of ice. He dips the newly carved section into a large pot of water and then quickly presses it against a larger piece of ice. The character, no doubt one of the denizens of SpongeBob's Bikini Bottom, is beginning to take shape.

In another corner, a carver uses a level to check his work. Nearby, another refers to one of the plastic-covered, color-coded blueprints.

Huge blocks of ice are moved by men on mini forklifts, while smaller blocks are toted by hand.

"They created those packages faster than you could wrap a package," Moody spokesman Joshua Buckley said, motioning to a pair of ribbon-topped sculptures. "They work so fast."

Overseeing the ice sculpting is Qiu Guanghui. His 30-strong VYA Ice Carving Team includes the male carvers and three female designers.

Qui has been sculpting ice for 35 years. At 18, he finished third in the first ice sculpting competition he entered. Since then, he's won numerous titles. His hometown of Harbin is home to the largest ice festival in the world.

When they arrived in Galveston a month ago, the tent was chilled to 9 degrees. The carvers had the temperature raised to 19 degrees so that the ice wouldn't shatter as they worked. When the carving is done, the temperature will return to 9 degrees. That's just another day at the office for the team members. Temperatures in their hometown typically are below freezing for nearly six months of the year.

This is Qui's first visit to Texas and only his second stay in the United States. But he and his team are well-traveled, working in such far-flung places as Finland and Australia.

Qui, speaking through an interpreter, said his team is enjoying their time in Galveston.

"The beach is nice," Qui said, "and the people are friendly."

The carvers are staying at a family-run hotel within walking distance of Moody Gardens. Because they travel with their own chef, they haven't been sampling the local cuisine. But they have been promised a proper Texas barbecue before they depart for home, interpreter Qun Lu said.

The team has impressed John Zendt, Moody Gardens president and CEO. He compares the carvers' celebrity back home to professional football players here.

"These guys are stars back home," Zendt said. "There are only a couple under age 30, and they've all been carving since age 10."

Moody Gardens estimates that it will take the carvers approximately 1,080 man-hours to complete Ice Land. Among the 30-foot-tall exhibit's features will be bridges, caves and an ice slide. Visitors will be given parkas to tour the exhibit, which will remain open through Jan. 4.

When they're not carving, team members have been going to the beach and shopping. They like Ross and Marshall's. (Apparently Nike shoes are cheaper here than in China.) And several are considering purchasing the iPhone 6 before departing next month.

When the exhibit is completed, the team - except for four members who will remain for needed touch-ups or repairs - will return to China with their souvenir cowboy hats (gifts from Moody Gardens) and their memories of the island.

"The air is so fresh here," Qui said. "And there are so many fish."

SpongeBob & the Hi-Seas to perform at Moody Gardens

Brighten up the wintery season with the opening of Moody Gardens’ 13th annual Festival of Lights and the debut of ICE LAND: Ice Sculptures with SpongeBob SquarePants on Nov. 15. As a special treat for guests, this year’s opening day celebration will not only have parachuting Santa, but also a special performance by Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants, and his band the Hi-Seas to help welcome in the holiday season.

Tom Kenny voices the lead role of “SpongeBob” in Nickelodeon’s iconic hit series SpongeBob SquarePants. Since it first aired in 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants has been nominated for 15 Emmy Awards and has consistently been the most watched animated series on TV. The notable voice actor is familiar to Nick viewers as the voice of “Dog” in CatDog, and “Heffer” on Rocko’s Modern Life.

Tom Kenny and the Hi-Seas will kick-off the grand opening of ICE LAND Ice Sculptures at noon with their first performance for the day. Free holiday-themed entertainment from talented locals including the Galveston Ballet and Master Illusionist Curt Miller and Friends is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Guests can welcome Santa at 5 p.m. when he parachutes down from the North Pole to help prepare Moody Gardens for the grand lighting. Tom Kenny and the Hi-Seas and SpongeBob SquarePants will perform again at 5:15 pm, with a special musical performance from Galveston ISD to follow. After these dazzling performances, Mr. Claus will flip the switch to begin the Festival of Lights at 6 p.m. and officially ring in the holiday season on Galveston Island.

Being the only holiday ice exhibition on the Gulf Coast, ICE LAND: Ice Sculptures with SpongeBob SquarePants will transform Moody Gardens into the premiere holiday destination in the Southwest with the help of the beloved underwater characters from SpongeBob SquarePants. Chilled and held at a temperature of 9 degrees, guests can witness this vast and magnificent holiday display of 900 tons of towering ice creations through January 4. Admission to the exhibition is $26.95 for adults, $21.95 for seniors and $15.95 for children, and is also included in both Value Passes.
