For my first topic on this site, I'll be listing my Top 10 least favorite episodes from the pre-movie era of SpongeBob. One big thing to know about me is that I'm all about pre-movie SpongeBob; I don't really follow the series much anymore. There's plenty of bad/mediocre episodes to go around from the post-movie era, so I wanted to narrow it down to what I think is the worst of the old days. I don't really hate most of these, but I want to talk about what I think are the 10 least enjoyable efforts from the pre-movie era. I won't be listing any "dishonorable mentions" since I like almost every pre-movie episode. Please don't hate on my list either; just my opinions, feel free to agree or disagree. I'll post each episode one at a time. First up...

I'm not a big fan of 'Suds' for two reasons - 1. It was REALLY overplayed on TV back in the day, so it got old quick. 2. It's just not very interesting to me. I don't really see much said about this episode, but it never stood out as one of the series' finest to me. The plot is decent I suppose, but just really bland: SpongeBob gets sick, chaos ensues. I also don't really dislike this episode; Patrick is hilarious in this one, and Sandy was also good. The doctor scene at the end was also really funny!

My biggest issue with this is how the plot felt bland compared to most other Season 1 episodes. Compared to most of the others on this list, it's a really good episode, but a sure disappointment overall for Season 1/pre-movie era. Not particularly 'bad', but not very special either. Simply put, you'd expect more from a pre-movie episode. Oh well; something had to be at #10, right?

Best Moment: (Patrick with SpongeBob in the torture chamber environment) "Uh-oh; it's Sandy!"
Worst Moment: Patrick rips out one of SpongeBob's teeth to try to cure the Suds.

Some of you are probably immediately thinking, "This low?" Yes, there are 8 more that I like less. On one hand, I think 'Dumped' gets too much hate, and on the other, I must admit it's still one of the weakest pre-movie episodes. The plot is simple enough: Gary leaves SpongeBob for Patrick for some reason, and SpongeBob becomes jealous and depressed.

From the pre-movie days at least, Patrick was always one of my favorite characters (for future reference, my favorite 3 characters are Squidward, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs), but there were a couple episodes that managed to make him a bit unlikable. In 'Dumped', Patrick basically just claims Gary as his own pet because he starts to follow him, leaving SpongeBob heartbroken. If he was a true friend, Patrick shouldn't have accepted Gary and given him back to SpongeBob. Patrick (pre-movie) is almost always likable in his stupidity, but he's just plain selfish and mean here. Fortunately, that's really the only thing that drags down this episode for me though. The new pets SpongeBob tries to get are funny to watch, and you can sincerely sympathize with SpongeBob in this one. I wouldn't call the episode bad, but Patrick's personality in it simply makes it one of the least enjoyable pre-movie episodes.

Best Moment: SpongeBob and Patrick realize Gary only followed Patrick for the cookie in his pants pocket; reunites with SpongeBob at the end. "Gary... I thought what we had was SPECIAL!!!"
Worst Moment: Patrick exclaims, "How pathetic," when SpongeBob tries to get Gary back; a shame they made Patrick so mean in this one.

10 Suds: It's just OK to me. Not much stands out but I do like it a bit
9: I like it because it shows that Gary and SpongeBob will always be together, it was heartwarming, a unique episode, It shows that SpongeBob cares for Gary 100%, and that he'd do anything to get him back if he left. So for this and other reasons, I like Dumped personally.

i like dumped, despite everyone hating it.

i really hope the sponge who could fly is here... that's my 2nd least favorite pre-movie episode.

'Ugh', also known as 'SpongeBob B.C. (Before Comedy)', is a land of missed opportunities. It's a mostly decent episode, but it could have been so much more, and that's what makes it disappointing. It's just a special (with Patchy and Potty) set in prehistoric times for SpongeBob, Squidward and Patrick.

The episode is somewhat boring; it feels very prolonged since very little actually happens (which is basically just discovering fire and fighting over it, which lasts double the time of a normal episode). Also, there's a few gross gags that you would expect to see in a post-movie episode, like Patrick pulling the bottom of his mouth over his face and it rips open when he greets SpongeBob, or when Patrick puts a stick through his mouth. Like I mentioned before, it feels like there were some missed opportunities too, like only having SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward (or in this episode, called SpongeGar, Patar, and Squog) as the characters. It was nice to see Mr. Krabs get a cameo, but what about the other fish? It also seems like they could have done a lot more prehistoric-centered things besides a couple discoveries. Also, the Patchy/Potty escapades came off as annoying and a bit dumb to me. Not all-bad, but could have been so much better. Now we've got one from all 3 seasons!

Best Moment: When Squog picks between two clubs, the club left behind sobs to itself, depressed that Squog chose the other.
Worst Moment: Patar rips the bottom half of his mouth while greeting SpongeGar (for no apparent reason...).

Pearl is reputable for being one of the most disliked characters in the SpongeBob universe, and that applies here (though not as drastically as post-movie episodes). Mr. Krabs is convinced Pearl will improve the Krusty Krab with her new ideas, so he lets her work at the Krusty Krab; she ends up eliminating any of the old Krusty Krab that once was. Like 'Dumped', 'Bossy Boots' was another Season 2 episode I wasn't a big fan of; there'll be two more from Season 2 to come by the way.

Squidward protesting was pretty funny, as were several Mr. Krabs moment. Simply put, the problem is Pearl; I mean, she wrecks the Krusty Krab, and only cares that it's ruining her 'social life' when she says she wants to quit, which basically implies having a summer job is ruining her social life. Simply put, Pearl is a brat, and really annoying to me. I just felt very 'meh' about 'Bossy Boots'; not terrible, but just really pale in comparison to many pre-movie episodes. On a side note, my favorite Pearl-centered episode is 'The Chaperone' from Season 1.

Best Moment: SpongeBob revives Mr. Krabs by waving a $20 bill in front of his nose after firing Pearl.
Worst Moment: Pearl whining about her social life being ruined by having a summer job.

The part where SpongeBob and Pearl are suggesting new themes for the Krusty Krab was always the best part for me. "The Killer Krab!!!!!!" Lol. Pearl isn't nearly that bad in this episode actually. She does become more annoying later on in the series though.

I do agree it gets way worse, but I'm still annoyed by her in this one. She's just so selfish and careless. But yes I did also like the scene where they suggested new stuff - that was funny.

The second and last Season 1 episode to make this list is 'Fools in April', a rarely-discussed episode from what I've seen. I still wouldn't call this one bad, but more on that in a second. Annoyed with SpongeBob's pranks on April Fool's Day, Squidward pulls a cruel, violent prank on SpongeBob, but ends up feeling guilty about it and tries to apologize.

Two big issues with this episode: 1. Squidward's jerky prank to SpongeBob; Squidward obvioiusly isn't nice to SpongeBob, but this was just really mean-spirited. 2. SpongeBob is at his most annoying in Season 1 in the first half of this episode. Fortunately, Squidward does apologize for the prank, but it was still a way over-harsh thing to do (inflicting physical pain just wasn't right). SpongeBob constantly laughing and yelling "APRIL FOOLS!!!" was a bit much as well; while re-watching the series, I didn't expect him to be this annoying this early on (fortunately it's only a few times pre-movie that it gets near this bad). Again, it is good that Squidward at least felt guilty about it and apologized, but I was honestly caught off-guard by him doing something like that. Patrick's few moments are good, and Squidward's efforts to apologize to SpongeBob are pretty funny too. I wouldn't call it bad, but has to be one of the worst in Season 1-3 in my opinion. Top 5 on the way!

Best Moment: Squidward's head explodes when he first tries to apologize to SpongeBob; sounds really violent, but just comes off as humorous.
Worst Moment: The mean prank pulled by Squidward on SpongeBob of course; again, the saving grace was Squidward's guilt and apology.

No one else? Bueller, Bueller? Ok - Top 5:

300px-I%27m_Your_Biggest_Fanatic.jpg
I'll start my Top 5 off with another Season 2 episode - 'I'm Your Biggest Fanatic'. SpongeBob tries to get into the Jellyspotters Club by passing the tests of Kevin the Sea Cucumber, the club's leader as well SpongeBob's idol. I still don't think we're quite in 'bad' territory yet (probably just my Top 4), but this episode just never appealed to me that much.

Admittedly, I did use to like it a bit more, but it just seems so blah to me now. Kevin was really obnoxious, and SpongeBob's obsession with him really was more creepy than it was funny (Hi, Kevin....). It has a bit too much violence it seems like between constant stinging on Kevin and ripping the 'crown' off at the end... Besides the violence, SpongeBob's creepiness/gullibility, and Kevin not being likable, it's just a dull episode. There's just so many more funnier and more entertaining episodes from Season 2, that this one sticks out like a sore thumb for not being up to par. So yeah, basically just not very interesting for me and a tad too high on the violence.

Best Moment: Patrick stalking Jeffrey Jellyfish, and the end with Patrick bringing Jeffrey away tied up in a wagon; this comes after Patrick tells SpongeBob that hero worship is unhealthy...
Worst Moment: The anchovies tear off the top of Kevin's head and give it to SpongeBob as a crown.
