Every episode of Teen Titans Go! reviewed

The long wait is finally over. Here it is, the second review!

101b: Pie Bros
Aired April 23, 2013

So for the second episode we get an examination of the relationship of Cyborg and Beast Boy. This is a very important relationship as it ties in to many gags and episodes in the series and this episode puts both of their personalities together well to show how exactly their friendship works. In this episode, Beast Boy gets a job to try to pay for a gift for Cyborg's birthday party but ends up causing a rift in their friendship because of it. This episode plays off of jokes based on the character's reactions to the situation. There were many good jokes in this episode and the plot flowed in a very natural way. I really enjoyed the sequence of Beast Boy getting various jobs. It really just makes for a ton of good jokes and since this is the second episode, it's a good look at Beast Boy so the audience will know what to expect in future shenanigans. The climax in the fight between Cyborg and Beast Boy makes for a very impressive moment of the two finally coming full circle and becoming friends again over the original drawing Beast Boy made (which maximizes the show's simplistic artstyle and for their standard quality level it's some of the best drawings they've made. It actually looks hand drawn and not made on a computer). The episode is enticing throughout with many good jokes that make you keep watching even if the story isn't particularly amazing or original.

Overall I really liked this episode. Everything about it felt smooth and natural and I honestly don't have any nitpicks. I think I prefer this episode to Legendary Sandwich a small bit since of the writing made for much better jokes in my opinion (I liked the dark joke at the end with Cyborg and Beast Boy "eating" the titans). My favorite part I believe I have already mentioned and I think that's all that I have to say about this episode.

Final rating: Good.

Here's another one. Enjoy or don't.

102a: Driver's Ed
Aired April 30, 2013

This episode abandons the setting up of the first two episodes and is focused just on being funny. It does a pretty good job and makes for an enjoyable 10 minutes. The plot of this episode is that Robin needs to get a driver's license, but his driving instructor uses him as a getaway driver. This episode has many great running jokes to it, like Cyborg forgetting Starfire's name, Robin screaming GET IN THE CAR and "That's a deduction". Ed is an entertaining character for how monotone and lifeless his voice is and it's just very entertaining. There is also a pretty good car chase sequence at the end which goes to many different places (including outer space) which makes for a satisfying climax, even if the resolution is a bit sudden.

There's not a whole lot I have to say about this episode. It's far from one of the show's best but I enjoyed it and I don't have any complaints. My favorite part of it was probably the beginning with Robin getting free rides off of the other titans and this interfering with their lives. "YOU ARE DIE" is a good short gag at the very beginning which I liked a lot. So yeah, overall this episode was not fantastic but I did enjoy it and I think it's pretty decent.

Final rating: Good.

102b: Dog Hand
Aired April 30, 2013

I can't say I was too impressed with this episode. This gives us a look into Raven's father, Trigon. Trigon is a pretty good character and this kind of serves as his introductory episode. It demonstrates his character pretty well, but I don't think this episode really gave enough jokes. There are some good moments, like the sitcom jokes at the beginning and end and the cheesy music that follows it, and Starfire talking like a teenager is pretty hilarious in an ironic sense (which I believe it was intended as), but this episode seems like it was only intended to show you what Trigon is like as a character. It does a good job of that, but the main thing that makes me want to watch this show regularly is it's humor and there just isn't enough there in this episode. There's nothing particularly bad about it but I just can't say it interests me. I believe they could've made a whole episode about the Titan's new powers, like Cyborg's dog hand which plenty of jokes could've came from (yet they decided to just use it as a short background gag). The plot they went with wasn't great and I think they'd do the Trigon/Raven dynamic better in later episodes.

So yeah, overall this episode wasn't too great. It was enjoyable enough for me to watch and there's nothing about it that would really turn me off in any way. It's fine but that's all it really is. Best parts are already mentioned, I think that's about it with this episode. First episode I wasn't too impressed with. Far from bad, though. I should emphasize that.

Final rating: Okay.

103a: Double Trouble
Aired May 7, 2013

This episode is a rather odd one. It takes a rather cliche plot and plays it pretty standard until a little over halfway through where a bizarre TTG twist is put on it and I think it worked quite well. The plot is that Cyborg clones himself to get out of playing an odd game with Beast Boy where Cyborg basically has to try not to get eaten by him (I really enjoyed the opening sequence of the two playing this game. So wonderfully random and hilarious), but the real Beast Boy prefers the clone to the real Cyborg. Feeling left out, Cyborg clones Beast Boy to try to get his friend back, but Beast Boy ends up hanging out with the Cyborg clone. Then the original Cyborg and Beast Boy become friends again and see how annoying the clones are. This sequence is pretty standard. A lot of cartoons have done this kind of plot before and this is exactly what I would expect from shows doing it. Still, it moves the plot along and there are some decent jokes that come out of it, like when Cyborg gets mad over the empty tub. I did get enough enjoyment out of these scenes to keep watching to the best part of the episode.

The clones then make many more clones of the clones and take over the titans tower. But soon it turns out the Cyborg and Beast Boy that were kicked out were actually clones of the real Cyborg and Beast Boy who had been hiding out in an apartment eating pizza and playing video games for months. The last bits of the episode are truly hilarious. I love the morbidly obese Cyborg and Beast Boy and how slow moving they are. It also leads to a hilarious joke about the other Cyborg and Beast Boy being hobos. The rest of the episode is wild randomness done in classic TTG fashion making for a very enjoyable ending and puts the episode as one of the funniest the show's done yet, even if the first half isn't too great. I really enjoyed this episode and it was a great watcch for me and is probably the best thing I've seen out of the series so far. Quite a good episode.

Final rating: Good.

103b: The Date
Aired May 7, 2013

This episode was alright. This isn't one I remembered very well when going in but after watching it I can say I was impressed that it wasn't half bad. This episode puts us into the unrequited love of Robin and Starfire. Basically, Robin kidnaps Starfire's date, Speedy, and impersonates him to make a bad impression so that their relationship can end. As would be natural for a plan like that, it fails, and hilarity ensues. Well, not quite. There is not really enough in this episode for me to discuss; it's pretty unmemorable. The episode does have plenty of good moments and overall I enjoyed it. I love the running gag with the narrator and how it ties in to the end of the episode (I won't spoil for those who haven't seen) and the scenes with Speedy tied up in the Titans tower ("Kidnapping is so boring" is great quote) but overall Speedy isn't a very memorable character and this episode isn't memorable either.

This episode is definitely enjoyable but it just feels like a way to kill 11 minutes rather than the normal (well, normal as in the show before season 3. I'll get to that when we get there) funny and entertaining TTG episode we normally get. I am very close to giving this just the okay rating but it's good enough to get a VERY light good. I apologize if this review wasn't very good, I'm tired and I don't have a lot to say about this episode.

Final rating: Good.

104a: Dude Relax
Aired May 14, 2013

Robin's anxiety, paranoia and frustrations are hilarious and one of the best aspects of the series. This episode is kind of a prelude to that and it's enjoable to an extent. The episode involves Robin having to do nothing but relax for one afternoon and his struggle in completing the task. This episode started off great with plenty of goo jokes about Robin's vigilance (like turning sleep into a sport) and Beast Boy painting animals green and running off from missions. Both of these also tie into a great ending with Robin finally being able to relax at the one moment when the Titans are under attack. but to get to the ending, there's a very odd sequence in the middle I'm not too fond of. This episode has a weird scene in the middle where Robin enters the couch and gets haunted by his past which leads to a circus flashback of when he was a child. I didn't find any of it funny. It was pretty brief so I don't think it'll impact my rating, but it's a complaint.

These really early episodes have an odd feel to them, like a bit of uncertainty from the writer's room. I don't think the show was completely certain of what it wanted to be yet, which I think it found around 105b/106a. So they're in this weird limbo where none of them do anythin wrong and are enjoyable watches (so for that I kind of have to rate them as good) but just feel like they're missing an element and I don't exactly know what that element even is. It just feels kind of incomplete. I'm very excited to move into the best part of the series which is from around 106 to the end of season 2, so maybe I'm just overlooking these episodes. In any case, I'll give this one a good rating.

Final rating: Good.

104b: Laundry Day
Aired May 14, 2013

So here's a bit of an odd one. It's about the events that happen on the titans' laundry day. This episode has a lot of montages. Like, a lot. There's a montage of the titans competing to see who has to do the laundry, a montage of Robin trying to get into the tower, a montage of Cyborg trying to find a suit, a montage of Starfire sewing, a montage of Raven doing the laundry, a montage of Beast Boy playing video games naked, a montage of the clothes attacking the titans and I'm sure there's one I'm forgetting. These montages all spawn jokes pretty quickly due to the way the story is told, making it one of the better episodes at this point in time. I just find this method of storytelling a bit odd as it's not how normal stories are told. Still though, I did get some enjoyment out of this episode. The ending is great as most TTG endings are (I've noticed that when writing for this), and there's plenty of good jokes about Beast Boy's carelessness to the situation and also a great joke of him in a staring contest with himself. It's a rapid-fire type of episode that feels pretty short too. I should also mention that there's a whole 30 second scene before the title credits even come in, which rarely happens on this show. Just found that a bit interesting.

So overall this episode was good. I think it's my favorite so far. I don't think it's at the show's top level of quality yet but it's very good and that's good enough. The show is very close to entering it's peak era. So close. I can almost feel it coming.

Final rating: Good.

Sorry about the delay on this one. I'll try to write several today.

105a: Ghost Boy
Aired May 21, 2013

This episode was pretty good. From here I noticed this episode was a lot more like the TTG from most of season 1 to the end of season 2 that I like the most. It had a kind of feeling to it that I didn't get in the past few episodes. It wasn't amazing but I liked it a lot. The episode's story is basically that Beast Boy pranks Starfire by making her think he's a ghost. She falls for it and does a bunch of odd favors for Beast Boy because of it. When she finds out that Beast Boy isn't actually a ghost, she and the other titans get revenge by making Beast Boy think he's a ghost, which leads him to do a deadly stunt, which leads to all the titans getting killed trying to save him. The deaths are played in a comedic fashion, but the episode still has a pretty bleak ending. I like it though, it's done in a way that all seems natural to the characters and is pretty funny too.

This episode is clearly a step in the right direction towards the show's peak. I don't think this episode is fantastic but I definitely enjoyed it and it was actually better than I remembered from seeing it when it first aired in 2013. It's a good episode that I enjoyed a lot. Far from the show's finest, but we're getting very close. If I remember correctly the next two episodes are very good. We'll find out soon.

Final rating: Good.

105b: La Larva De Amor
Aired May 28, 2013

Well it looks like I was wrong here. So this one has quite the story. It's about Silkie getting lost and then...getting into a relationship with a Mexican woman which leads to tension between her former lover. Yeahhhhh, this one wasn't very good. I liked the subplot with the titans trying to find Silkie but the majority of this was in it the story with Silkie and it just felt way too bizarre for me. I get that this show isn't even remotely realistic and I can appreciate that but this one just felt like it was in this odd limbo. It didn't have a story that was random enough to be hilarious from it's randomness but it was too silly to be taken as a "normal" story. So it didn't quite really resonate with me because of that. There were a few moments that I enjoyed, like the duel between Carlos and Silkie (even then that could've gone on for longer and made for something better) and like I said I did enjoy the titans' subplot a bit but that was rather short. And also, the resolution was pretty short too for how long the plot took in setting itself up (the setup was like 2-3 minutes whereas the resolution was about 30 seconds)

All in all, I just did not like that episode that much. It's not bad but I just can't say it's good. The rating is obvious then but this one really disappointed me. I thought that this was a good one but I guess the episode I was thinking of is the next one. This is easily the worst episode of the series yet and I really was let down by this. I guess maybe this was the calm before the storm and after this everything becomes incredible. Because I know that's coming soon so at this point I'm just wondering when it's gonna hit. We'll find out soon.

Final rating: Okay.

106a: Hey Pizza
Aired June 4, 2013

Okay, here it is. This is the episode I was thinking of. This one is fantastic. It's basically a nonstop barrage of jokes about Cyborg and Beast Boy getting more and more exasperated trying to win free pizza. It comes out perfectly and ends up being by far the show's best so far. There's also a subplot here about Robin indecisive over whether or not he wants to build a pool or a senior center. It's not great, but it inspires some good jokes and moves along at a good pace. There's also a suicide joke here with the old people that gets referenced twice in this episode, so make of that what you will. This one has so many good jokes in it that it's hard to single out highlights but I will say the ending where Cyborg and Beast Boy go completely insane and destroy everything after finding that the old man got free pizza and they got nothing is subliminal. It's so bizarre using that word to describe ::dolphin noise:: Teen Titans Go but you know the entire concept of this thread is asinine to begin with.

So yeah, the series has finally reached it's peak point that I was talking about. Besides a few mistakes here and there, the show generally manages to stay consistently good for the rest of season 1 and season 2 from here on out. Then once 3 comes it gets waaaaaaay worse. So um, yeah. Things are gonna get more interesting for me and less for you for a while. I know, because people tend to prefer negative reviews to positive ones. But anyway, on this episode itself. It's great and I liked it a lot. None of the previous episodes can really stand on the level of this episode, although some may come close they're still not that close. This episode is great and I hope my memory is right and everything after this is actually really good. I feel like I should add another sentence to end this properly so um here.

Final rating: Good.

106b: Gorilla
Aired June 11, 2013

I have a bit of a mixed opinion on this one. It does have plenty of good jokes and moments scattered throughout it but the writing on this one feels a bit inconsistent. I don't exactly know how to say what I mean by that. Basically in this episode, Beast Boy overthrows Robin and becomes the new leader of the titans. The problem I have with this episode is that it starts off showing Robin as the antagonist and Beast Boy as the hero. I do love jokes about Robin's anxiety so I feel the first half of this was quite good. But then in the second half they show Robin as the hero for doing what he did in the first half which I just find confusing. The episode is generally good throughout, but I just feel like they rushed the writing on this one a bit. So while I do enjoy it, I can't give the episode too much high praise for having glaring mistakes like this.

I guess maybe this episode is like the last moments of the show's beginning oddness. It does feel more like a standard episode than most of the episodes before it, but like I keep saying, there's major issues in the writing here. Perhaps maybe I am looking too deep into this. It's a good episode and it does enough to make the 11 minutes entertaining and worthwhile, so I'm not gonna give it any lower marks for the writing issues. I like this episode, even if I don't love it, and that's pretty much it. I don't believe I have anything else to say about this episode, so sorry if this review is really short.

Final rating: Good.

107a: Girls Night Out
Aired June 18, 2013

The plot of this is fairly cliche. Many, many shows have done this story. However plot isn't really made that relevant here - it's mostly built on jokes. There are some good moments here, like the CRAZY FRIES scene with Robin, Cyborg and Beast Boy and their reaction to Raven and Starfire's shenanigans. I love Raven's insipid demeanor throughout this episode and what goes on. Plus when she attacks the carnival mascot, great scene. Also this episode is the first we see of Jinx, a member of The H.I.V.E. Five which are the Titans' rivals generally even though in this episode Jinx is with the protagonists in the episode. One minor complaint: I would've liked more scenes of Robin, Cyborg and Beast Boy. I know the episode is named "Girls Night Out", but still. The scenes we got were quite good so I would've liked some more. So yes, this episode was generally enjoyable even if a bit too unoriginal for my taste. I don't have much else to say about this one. I know this review is very short but I did say reviews would be 1-3 paragraphs, so this length does fit my standards. Besides, if I had a wall of text here no one would read it and just skip to the rating so I think this is best to get my thoughts across in a concise manner.

Final rating: Good.
