In 2007 I made a topic asking whether you downloaded music via file sharing on programs like LimeWire or by buying them on the iTunes Store. This is about downloading, not buying physical copies, so don't respond saying "I buy CDs".

My stance on this is legally downloading music from iTunes. I haven't used LimeWire in a while because there hasn't been any good music that you can't buy on iTunes yet in a while. I decided to check out LimeWire again a few days ago. The interface has changed completely, and one or two annoyances like no preview anymore when downloading is okay due to the new features like songs marked as spam and just one MP3 coupled with a long list of the same ones.

I daren't download from LimeWire though due to my ISP looking into what we download and even sending out friendly educational letters about legal download sites if your IP is caught using file sharing. Dangit, I just want to have a look at LimeWire that's all!

Anyway, here are the results from last time:

Total Votes: 8

  • Legally (iTunes, *the new* Napster, other places where you have to buy songs to download them) [3 votes] 37.50%
  • Illegally (LimeWire, *the old* BearShare, other places where you download songs from other users or a centralised server) [3 votes] 37.50%
  • Both ("I use LimeWire and iTunes Store" etc.) [2 votes] 25.00%

Don't forget to vote in the new poll.

iTunes is the only site we've ever used. And by ever, I mean, since last year when my daughter was the first to bring an mp3 player into our home when she won an iPod at school. We had never used a computer before that to listent to, let alone buy, music on.

Well, he surely didn't mean licking doorknobs, which is apparently illegal on other planets, but not here. @_@

And Mr. B, you could have said "lawfully" and "unlawfully" if you wanted a different word.

Argh. I took the plunge. I downloaded a Beatles song.

As soon as you can buy them I'm deleting it and buying it.

I download my music legally, obviously.

LimeWire is illegal? :)

Yes then, I guess.
It connects to BitTorrent sites. They state it many times on their website. Even though they have a Creative Commons License and Legal Addresses, none of them apply to their music content.

I get my music from physical albums and then I download them into the computer. Although, I'll occasionally take a good download from some file sharing websites (mostly for rarities). So both, but mostly legally.

oh and btw I hate both iTunes and LimeWire.

I was never able to get LimeWire to work, so I use iTunes and sometimes buy CDs.
(If anyone could help me with LimeWire that would be awesome BTW)

Little bit of both. I don't download a whole lot nowadays. But I've probably spent a couple hundred bucks over the past five years on iTunes music. I've downloaded a lot more.

Frankly, I don't have any qualms about "illegal' downloading. The record companies and artists have enough money as it is - certainly more than me or my family - and if I have the tools at my disposal, I say "Why not?" Same goes for movies and software (although I have forked over money for software on multiple occasions... just not the real expensive stuff).

There are many rules in the U.S. of A., and a lot of them are made to protect the interests of the well-off. If I were to have to pay for all my music, movies and software, I might be substantially less "cultured" (if you can call it that), and quite likely, a total internet and computer n00b. There's always more than one side to an argument.

I sometimes download games and TV shows illegally...

Yet, suprisingly, all my music is 100% legal, and it's all transferred from CD. :)

So, I have no idea what to choose.

Choose 'legal' - this is about music. -_-

Ok, all I have to ask is, who in the world still actually uses Limewire? It's moved into torrent territory now as it's becoming increasingly hard for people to download from programs like Limewire and you know to bypass that check you can always pay for a VPN service. *winkwinknudgenudge*

I download all my music legally. If the song is not available in America at all, that's the only time I'll download from a website (which is NOT illegal).

I'll use Megaupload and RapidShare search engines, so it's a little bit safer but still illegal. However, if it's a band that needs support then we'll buy it anyway.

Uh, never heard of "Limewire". I don't use LimeWire if that's what you're thinking.

Can't wait 'til I move to the UK. It's so modern and sensible.
