DMAN attempts to talk about every single CN original in existence

thoughts so far:

Ben 10 (2016): It's pretty harmless, but I don't care for it and prefer the original show from 2006. What's cool is that apparently Man of Action (the creators of the Ben 10 franchise) still work on this new one.

Gumball: Great show. I feel it's been going downhill since about Season 4, with Season 5 being the worst season of the show... everyone on the internet loves it at the moment. Too bad no one talked about it during Season 2 and 3...

Johnny Bravo: Haven't watched it much but it seems like a decent show from what I've seen.

We Bare Bears: I loved this show at first, but now it just feels like they're reusing the execution of the plots for 2 seasons now that it made me stop giving a crap about it and I wonder why it's still on.

good reviews so far, keep it up :D
You're like the first person to talk about them so far.

BTW I expect the one for Clarence to be out sometime tomorrow after 6 PM

#49: Clarence "Fun Dungeon Face Off"
[April 14, 2014]

2872dcw.png

You know how I said WBB was an "interesting" show? Scratch that. This show is FAR more "interesting" than the previous, and it's possibly even more down-to-earth realistic as well. Now that I think about it, "interesting" isn't the best word to describe this show; it's probably more along the lines of "strange". Let's dive right in to the weirdness.

The episode starts with a parody of those origin story videos that always start with "Oh, hello. I didn't see you come in" or something along those lines. After it finishes, we see our main characters are at a fast food place. Clarence is a complete oddball, no two ways about it, Sumo (aka Ryan) is less odd and more wild compared to Clarence, and Jeff is the "normal" one, despite being unusual in his own ways. Oh yeah, and Clarence's mother is there as well.

So, the three of them order their food (and Jeff only orders fries because... WHO CARES jk we'll get to it later). Clarence and Sumo immediately start mixing their food, much to Jeff's disgust. Clarence then starts to reach one of Jeff's fries which causes him to scream, implying that they're his and his only. He then goes to use the restroom, and puts his trust into Clarence not eating his fries.
Clarence agrees not to eat them, but he sneaks them into his pocket to give Jeff an excuse for going into the Fun Dungeon. The plan somewhat works. I say somewhat because Jeff goes in, but not with a calm sense of mind (he is completely enraged because he is sure Clarence ate his fries). After a long chase and battle, Clarence reveals he had the fries the whole time. Jeff tells him that he has his reasons for the things he does, such as ordering nothing but fries, not going inside the playplace, etc. Then they both "die" (they just fall down a slide) and become friends. The end.

...LOL GOTCHA

The REAL end is Sumo singing a song about a literal cow-girl toy that he possibly (ok, definitely) became emotionally attached to and left behind. That might sound out-of-place and cringe-worthy, but ONE thing makes up for all of it: Sumo is voiced by none other than Tom Kenny, who does great comedic singing voices in any situation IMO. And believe me, that's not the last we'll see of him. ;)

And that's pretty much it. As crazy as it was, this was a cool episode. It was also pretty funny at times (shout out goes to "All the kids love Clarence" immediately cutting to "I'M GONNA KILL YOU CLARENCE!"), but I can see why it's not for everyone, as it is very weird.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Clarence is an OK show. It takes a while to get used to how odd it is, but once you do it's actually pretty decent.
Final Rating: 7/10

Crossing my fingers for a non-running show this time around...

#28: Ben 10 (2005) "And Then There Were 10"
[December 27, 2005]

2hi06xz.png

The original Ben 10 is one of those shows I remember being on air, but never was really into. Also, it's more of an action and story-based show than all of the previous, so this review may be a bit different. Or it may not. Who knows. Let's discuss the episode anyway!

The episode starts in outer space, with an alien creature demanding something called the "Omnitrix" (sorry if I spelled that wrong), and then we see our main character, Ben, finishing up his last day of school before summer. But before he can, he gets wedgie-hung on a tree after trying to stop some bullies. Eventually, his grandpa shows up for their camping vacation with Ben's cousin, Gwen, who... Ben doesn't like that much. They become bored easily, and Ben decides to take a walk in the woods. At the same moment, a pod containing the Omnitrix itself crashes into the Earth. Ben witnesses the crash firsthand, approaches the device (thinking it's a watch), and it places itself on his wrist and becomes apparently irremovable. He becomes fidgety with the extraterrestrial device, and accidentally turns himself into an alien in the process. That's when the REAL plot begins.

...I think.

Anyways, now Ben is this fire thing (who we later learn is called "Heatblast") and he ends up causing a forest fire. Yeaaaaaah. Gwen and Ben's grandpa notice the fire from a distance, and attempt to put it out. Gwen approaches the creature, terrified at first, but eventually figures out it's Ben. He puts out the fire with more fire, and he gets his relatives caught up on the story shortly before the Omnitrix deactivates and he becomes normal again. Meanwhile, the outer space creature from earlier sends a robot (probably) to find the Omnitrix. As Ben experiments more, he figures out that that the device has power for turning him into multiple different aliens. He picks another one and ends up destroying one of the seeking robots because of it.

The rest of the episode follows a similar plot of events, until Ben and his relatives head out the next day. The episode ends with the school bullies from earlier wedgie-hung to a tree, thanks to one of Ben's many new aliens.

So, one thing to mention off the bat is that this is the first 22-minute episode I've reviewed so far. And boy, does it show. This felt a lot longer than any other episode, but that's not a bad thing, as this episode managed to keep my focus for all that time. Despite there being less comedy than most of the cartoons so far, it is definitely showing hope from its first episode.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Ben 10 2005 is far superior to its 2016 counterpart. I'd strongly reccommend giving it a watch, then checking out more episodes if interested.
Final Rating: 8.5/10

#33: Ben 10: Alien Force "Ben 10 Returns, Part 1"
[April 18, 2008]

2m7j69x.png

WOW WHAT A CREATIVE EPISODE NAME

It's a good thing that names aren't what I'm judging these episodes on. As I said earlier, this is the second of the five different Ben 10 series (I've already talked about the first and fifth ones). Also, it's yet another 22 minute episode. Let's just dive right in.

The episode starts with alien creatures (again) discussing the fact that Ben's grandpa (who is name Max BTW) has been leaking details of their secret plans and that he must be destroyed. We then return back to Earth, where Ben is competing in a soccer game, and ends up winning both the game and an MVP medal. He then meets a girl named Julie and talks with her for a bit before heading back to the trailer. However, he soon finds that he's not there and gets ambushed by one of the aliens similar to the one from the start of the episode. Eventually, it gets distracted while looking for something and Ben blows it away with a fire extinguisher. Ben then finds a message device with his grandpa telling him that he is in possession of the Omnitrix, though Ben finds it in his own room, making him confused. He then heads off to see cousin Gwen (both Ben and Gwen are more close than in the first episode of the previous show) to tell her about the message. They start to discuss, when they're ambushed by ANOTHER alien creature (who was stalking Ben earlier as well). The two fight back (also apparently Gwen gained magical powers somewhere in the last series), but after a short talk we see the alien just thought that Ben was just a random kid with the Omnitrix in the wrong hands, so he offers to help them.

(His name is "Magister Labrid" by the way)

They then plan a stakeout to catch some aliens (who are also criminals), and find them trading illegal Earth weapons to Kevin 11 (also a character from later in the main show). Then, even MORE criminals show up. Ben attempts to use the Omnitrix, but it refuses to work in the worst situation. Gwen and Magister decide to fight back themselves, but get covered in a slimy-spit material from some of the other aliens. Eventually, the Omnitrix automatically upgrades itself with aliens that Ben has never seen before. Ben uses one (obviously called Swampfire because they say their names now after transformation) to drive off the other aliens, before coming face-to-face with Kevin. You see, he wants revenge on Ben for trapping him in this void thingamajig. Eventually he is defeated, but they soon realize a bigger mistake: one group the criminals got away with the ultra-destructive weapons Kevin paid for. Because of this, Kevin agrees to help find them as well. They're led to a large, medieval castle filled with knights looking similar to the criminals from earlier. Ben bumps into one, which wakes up a dragon... and then we get a "TO BE CONTINUED..." card.

The first thing I realized was that Ben's voice is MUCH deeper compared to the original series, but that's not to much of a surprise considering he's fifteen in this show, while he was originally... ya' know, ten. Overall, this episode was OK. Not anything spectacular, but definitely not terrible. It lost my attention at one point, but I was able to re-watch it and understand what was happening. I think that's what happens when you only watch one episode of a show, skip the rest, and expect to get the next series. The action wasn't as huge as it was in the original's first episode, and the jokes hit an all-time low. As I've said before though, that's not a huge problem.

THE BOTTOM LINE: While not as good as the original, Alien Force is decent enough to view. I wouldn't say you should watch it, but I wouldn't say you should avoid it either. I'm pretty indifferent.
Final Rating: 7/10

PLEASE give me something else. I don't care if it's bad or good, I just want something interesting.

#24: The Life and Times of Juniper Lee "It's Your Party and I'll Whine if I Want To"
[May 30, 2005]

6en5za.png

This is the first of a few shows that I don't ever remember catching on television. I don't know exactly why that is, but it definitely is odd. I remember a good amount of the shows from 2005 such as Camp Lazlo, Ben 10, etc. being on the air (I even remember watching the former's premiere), but not this one... Anyway, let's get to the episode in question.

The episode starts with a brief introduction on the driving plot of the show: magic is all around (and in the form of monstrous creatures, both neutral and harmful) but said magic is invisible to almost everyone except for some, including Juniper, the obvious protagonist. Not only can she see these creatures, she's meant to stop them from disrupting the human-magic balance. And it is her only, because it's just one of those things that passed down from generation to generation, and her grandma (Ah-Mah in the show) recently passed it down to her. While fending of some creatures in the park, her brother "Ray Ray" shows up, being the most annoying thing ever. And with that, we've covered most of the main characters' roles and the intro plays.

After the intro finishes up, we see the two preparing for a party held by a friend of Juniper's (her name's Jody). Also, their talking dog Monroe is coming with them as well, because all the people apparently love him. Soon Ophelia, one of Juniper's friends who is also a goth, talks to her about the party and that Jody will likely be disappointed if she doesn't show up. On the way, Juniper explains that she doesn't want anything weird to happen during the party, so she tells Ray Ray and Monroe to act normal. And at that exact moment, she drops a jar with a genie that briefly escapes. Why is that important? You'll see. When they get there, several things happen. One, we meet another one of Juniper's friends, Roger, who is absolutely weird. Not Clarence weird, but still. Two, everyone terrorizes Monroe's well-being because despite his opposition, he's a dog and normal people can't hear him talk. And three, a hippie leprechaun thing shows up to tell Juniper that a creature called the "Racatan" has gone loose from them. And because she yells at what is seemingly thin air to everyone else, people think she's crazy. So she tells Ray Ray and Monroe to keep normal while she's gone.

Back home Juniper asks Ah-Mah if she can help her this one time, but she tells Juniper that it's her mission to take care of the burden alone. Also, at the mention of the name "Racatan" she becomes nervous and tells Juniper to hurry and take care of business as quickly as possible. When she finds the creature, she pokes it and it instantaneously becomes enraged. After an extensive duo, Ray Ray and Monroe pop out of nowhere and Juniper uses the genie from earlier to fend off the Racatan. Problem solved. Juniper goes back to Jody's house, apologizes for missing the bulk of the party, and hands her present to her. They go inside for cake, and the leprechaun creature from earlier requests some cake from Juniper and she ignores him for the time being. The end.

Let me get this out of the way: the animation in this show SCREAMS 2000s. It simply could not have existed at any other time. Also, the show isn't afraid to be outright deranged with its animation. Secondly, the comedy wasn't that bad. (Shout out goes to the leprechaun in its entirety and everyone misunderstanding the dog.) Honestly, I was reeeeeeeaaally not looking forward to covering this show, but surprise! It actually turned out to be decent. Nothing notable, but still pretty good.

THE BOTTOM LINE: This show is just as average as any other. It won't be brought up again any time soon, but it's OK and possibly a little bit too forgotten.
Final Rating: 7.5/10

I suppose that was a breath of fresh air. What's next, WD?

#06: Cow and Chicken "Field Trip to Folsom Prison"
[July 15, 1997]

1zr2s0m.png

It's about time I reviewed another show from the Cartoon Cartoons era. Also, I finally get a break from the 22 minute episodes (for now)! But before I review the episode, I have to discuss my background knowledge. As far as I can tell, I've only seen this show ONCE on television before and I don't even remember what it's about. So I'm going in almost blind. Let's watch!

The episode begins with Cow, Chicken, and their school class on a bus for a field trip to the local prison. When they get there, Chicken shows off by dressing up as one of the prisoners and pantsing a guard. Because of this, he is left in prison, but the prisoner he stole the suit from escapes as a result. The rest of the episode is the two subjects living normal lives, but swapped. They're pretty much identical. They play red rover, jump rope, and an assortment of other games as well.

But eventually, Cow realizes Chicken ISN'T Chicken because "Chicken would never play with her", while Red (the prisoner) is doing just that. So, she becomes "Super-Cow" to rescue Chicken. Meanwhile, Chicken causes a riot at the prison that ends up getting him face to face with the warden, aka Red Guy (who plays a different role in every episode BTW). Chicken confesses that he isn't really Red, and because of this Red Guy forces all the prisoners to apologize for their injustice, and he sends them into solitary confinement for 10 years, angering them towards Chicken. Thankfully, at that exact moment Super-Cow and the real Red return. Also, jump rope.

Cow and Chicken go home to their (human) parents, and they get a call from the warden. Chicken confesses everything, but not after the parents reveal the warden didn't say anything about that, yet they accept his honesty and feed him and Cow pork butts and taters. The end.

Well... this is one of the weirdest things I've seen yet. It's very Ren and Stimpy-esque, and that actually might not be a coincidence. Nevertheless, it was still entertaining. Sure, it was nonsensical and one of the shortest episodes yet, but that's not a bad thing. Nonsense (when used properly) can be extremely entertaining, and shortness doesn't even qualify as a quality factor most of the time. Speaking of entertaining, the comedy here is pretty good. Shout out goes to the prisoners playing children's games and the way Cow realizes "Chicken" is really a prisoner.

THE BOTTOM LINE: C&C is a bizarre show, but in a good way. I'd recommend watching a few eps.
Final Rating: This was tricky to decide, but for now it's a 7.5/10 (above the previous).

Well, that's what I call short and sweet. Wheel Decide, work your magic again!

#52: Mighty Magiswords "The Mystery of Loch Mess"
[September 5, 2016]

34pkfsx.jpg

Honest to God, I forgot this show even existed. And it hasn't even been TWO YEARS since it started airing! Just comes to show how TTG-centric the schedule was (and probably still is). Anyway, I never watched this show on TV at all, because just from the commercials alone I passed the show off as mediocre CN stuff. Well, here's my punishment for being quick to judge. LET'S WATCH THE EPISODE!

The episode begins with the Warrior (last name) siblings Prohyas and Vambre bored, because no one has hired them to take care of their problems for some time. However, not too long into the episode Princess Zange hires the two to take care of some business happening at "Loch Mess" because several delivery people have gone missing there. Also, if they're successful, she will name them "the go-to adventurers for royal missions". They, of course, accept the mission. The princess also reveals there to be "swine" around Loch Mess, so they acquire a bacon-shaped sword and... go get some burgers. During this, their business rivals, "Witch Way", overhear their mission and think the job is more well-suited for sorcerers like them rather than warriors. So the two groups simultaneously head to Loch Mess.

When the Warriors get to Loch Mess, they find a giant pig there who is willing to take them across the river and to a castle, where Queen Porcina Pork-Loin is waiting. It turns out she is holding all the delivery people captive, confusing them for pets. So the two both fight the Queen and her guards to rescue the delivery people, when right at the last moment, their rivals burst in and end up getting them all up for feeding to the Loch Mess Nomster (not a typo). In the end, Prohyas uses a muscle-enhancing sword from the beginning of the episode to burst out of their trap and set everyone free. When they return to the princess, she asks them about getting her a Loch Mess Nomster as a pet, and the siblings make shocked expressions. The end.

So here's what I was thinking the whole time while watching this: "This is WAAAAAAY too fast paced." And really, yes it is. I could barely even understand the dialogue in some of the scenes and had to watch them twice, and the plot I typed here is bare bones. And I think that's the huge problem with the show. If it were taken just a bit slower and it wasn't as chaotic and overly hyper in expressions and actions, I probably could enjoy the show for what it is a lot more. I will say the fact a lot of the seemingly threatening characters are neutral and monotone was something I found quite funny, but that's mostly it. As for now, I'll say my initial thoughts of the show being mediocre were pretty close to spot-on.

THE BOTTOM LINE: While it is extremely fast paced, in-your-face, and hard to comprehend, the are still tiny slivers of quality in Mighty Magiswords nonetheless.
Final Rating: 6/10

Eh, I guess that was tolerable. Hey Wheel Decide, give me something better will ya?

[SIZE=36pt]#16: Whatever Happened to... Robot Jones? "P.U. to P.E."[/SIZE]
[SIZE=18pt][July 19, 2002][/SIZE]

fdy1d2.png

I'm willing to bet the majority of you have never heard of this show. And I can't blame you, because I didn't know the show existed either until I starting getting into lists of all the CN originals back in 2013. The show briefly aired from 2002-03 and was barely shown on TV after that (we'll come along many similar cases of forgotten shows on this topic, and I'll mention them as well). And thus, the title of the show is now a serious question: "Whatever Happened to Robot Jones?" I don't really know. The show just kind of vanished for no reason from what I heard. Let's see if there's a reason behind that...

The episode begins with Robot (first name) Jones getting up and ready to go school to study pre-teen behaviors because... that's always what he does pretty much. Today, his "Mom Unit" tells him he will be studying all aspects of physical education., and gives him a jock strap to go along. The gym teacher (Mr. Workout is his name) tells Robot to start with push-ups, and he does so with "optimal efficiency". In fact, pretty much everything is a breeze for him, making the other boys visibly jealous and likely angered. But then, all the boys go to the showers. Robot, unaware of what a shower is, finds out it involves lots and lots of water and becomes terrified because water makes robots rust. And so, since he reports his data as incomplete to Mom Unit, he must go at it again the next day.

At that point, the gym teacher thinks "he's just embarrassed to take off his 'clothes'", and doesn't give Robot a turn to speak. Robot evenutally hands the teacher an overly complicated manual on how to disassemble him, and the bell rings, so Robot escapes to the next class. He avoids the showers time and time again, much to the annoyance of the gym teacher. After multiple failed attempts of giving Robot a shower he tells him he'll take one at the start of next class so the bell doesn't interrupt again.

That night, Robot has a surreal nightmare about the thought of taking a shower. When he gets to the locker room that day, everyone is waiting for him to meet his demise in the showers. He escapes yet again though, while having to dodge multiple water-based obstacles, but in the end he just ends up back in the locker room. He accepts his fate, only to realize that water doesn't always rust robots. He concludes that there is no harm in a robot taking a shower, but at that same moment he is electrocuting everyone standing in the same puddle as him. The end.

One all-too-common dumb complaint of this show is that the art style is "way too old-looking and ugly for 2002". Back in the day, I used side by that critique, but now I REALLY love the art style of the show. The fact they decided to use cel animation in 2002 amazes me, and the way everything looks reminds me all too much of Schoolhouse Rock, a great program which I also love for its old-timey art style. On the content of Robot Jones, it's also on a very good level. The episode managed to be funny (shout-out goes to the aforementioned electrocution scene), I liked the basic plot of the episode, etc. The only thing was that some of the characters acted slightly illogical, but that's about it. This show looked like it had a cool premise, just a shame it was ended after 13 episodes.

Also, the fact that "Take. off. your. clothes." and "I am gonna get you wet Jones, one way or another." made me smile proves I have a dirty mind.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Q: Whatever Happened to Robot Jones? A: We may never know, but it sure was darn good and definitely forgotten too soon.
Final Rating: 8/10

Wow, it's been awhile since I watched that show, and it managed to be better than I remembered! Wheel Decide, work your magic again!
