215b. Don't Wake Patrick

Here we are at the end of season 10! Can’t believe we’re finally here. I’ll miss not having to review 45+ episodes a season. Today’s episode is “Don’t Wake Patrick”, which is an episode that I have very little to say about. Honestly, I think I’ve only seen this episode a handful of times prior to this review, and none of them recently. So I really don’t remember much about it. Oh well, that’s what the rewatch is for!

I will say, knowing that this is a shorter episode than usual, and one about Patrick at that, worries me immensely. Yes, we did just have a fine episode about Patrick in “Patrick’s Coupon”, though that episode started good and ended poorly, but I’m still scarred by “Rise and Shine”, especially because that episode is also a short episode focused on Patrick. But, as per usual, I try to look upon the rewatch with a blank slate.

This episode begins with SpongeBob trying to go sleep, but being unable to because of his dry mouth. While the visual gag with SpongeBob’s dry mouth didn’t make me laugh, I do have to admire the creativity. SpongeBob then quickly realizes that he (and Gary) aren’t alone in his pineapple, but Patrick’s there too, causing destruction while sleepwalking. And SpongeBob can’t get him to wake up. So, a pretty simple plot, which works considering this is a short one. And at the end of everything (I’ll talk about the middle segments in a minute), Patrick finally wakes up, but SpongeBob is the one who starts sleepwalking. And unfortunately for him, Patrick is not quite as on him as SpongeBob was on Patrick.

Probably unsurprisingly, this episode doesn’t make me laugh very much. It’s trying, it definitely is, but I think that the jokes here aren’t my brand of humor. I can appreciate visual gags, but none of the ones here are really landing. I’m not really sure why. Maybe the scenario of trying to wake someone up isn’t inherently funny to me? Who knows. Once we leave the pineapple, things do improve. Because the trouble Patrick continues to get himself into, and SpongeBob’s attempts at stopping it (not to mention all the trouble SpongeBob gets into as a result) are more entertaining than anything the beginning of this episode had to offer. For the most part, though, I’m still not rolling on the floor or laughing out loud or anything, but I am entertained, and sometimes that’s all I can ask for.

Episode Tier: Good
Episode Score:
7.2/10

And that’s a wrap on season 10! As always, I’ll be posting my season overview on the last day of the month, which is tomorrow, and then I’ll jump right into season 11 on Friday.
