I know what you’re thinking. An episode all about romance, Pugs is gonna hate it, right? Wrong. Kind of. For once I don’t actually hate the romance present in this episode, because it’s involving Squidward, not SpongeBob or Patrick. I don’t necessarily care for it, but I don’t care for it in the sense that I don’t care about Squidward’s romantic life lol.
I will say, though, that since this show so rarely dabbles in the romantic waters, it makes this episode stand out as pretty much the only one (that I can think of right now) that focuses on Squidward trying to find love. Considering how much of a narcissist Squidward is, I’m almost surprised he even thinks about that lol. But I suppose both last episode and this one focus on Squidward’s desire for companionship in any capacity.
I really like that this episode has Squidward and SpongeBob acting almost like complete friends here. I mean, Squidward’s gushing about his crush to SpongeBob, and SpongeBob’s helping him get ready for his date. It’s cute, and nice to see. I always love when these two work together, as I’ve said before.
There are a couple things I don’t like about this episode. So firstly, I’m not a huge fan of the whole sputtering when talking to your crush trope. “Krusty Love” did it well, but this episode…does not, and it goes on entirely too long. So long, in fact, that my secondhand embarrassment meters start rising exponentially. Fortunately, SpongeBob saves the day during that segment, and he’s such a good wingman here, really hyping Squidward up but not too much (well not the selfless part). Another thing I don’t like is that even though the idea of this episode is interesting, the execution does leave a bit to be desired. Because I don’t know about y’all, but I would’ve preferred to actually
see Squidward on the date, rather than spend so much time on his practice date with SpongeBob. That part of the episode is a low good at best, because it’s not really funny, but it’s at least somewhat enjoyable. At least SpongeBob gives some pretty decent advice, while also being very annoying about it lol. Annoying in-universe, I mean, though it does kinda bleed into the viewing experience too. Patrick’s minor involvement in this episode is pretty funny, so that helps things along, though by this point it’s been like 3-4 minutes of this stuff.
After Squidward snaps at SpongeBob, he turns to find that Squilvia saw the whole thing. He’s immediate resignation to his fate is pretty funny, but as it turns out, he won after all, because Squilvia’s into that. Like I’ve said before, it’s always nice to see Squidward win every once in a while. If only they made Squilvia a recurring character, I would’ve appreciated that, even if I don’t care for romance. Though, according to
Vincent Waller on Twitter…perhaps Squilvia is gone for good. Sorry Squidward!
“Love That Squid” was a pretty good episode. It definitely was a lot better than it could’ve been, let’s put it that way. But it’s also not as good as it could’ve been. With most of the episode taking place during the practice date, which was not that entertaining other than a few moments, the enjoyability of these 11 minutes goes down considerably. But I mean, there was a lot of good in this episode too, so I can’t be too harsh on it.
