SpongeBob's Design (a theory)

I think SB's design is based off of lemon bars

While I have no real proof, remember that Stephen Hillenburg's wife works at a culinary school

Also I have ANOTHER possible theory about SpongeBob:

The reason he's so happy all the time is because he's bright yellow-colored which represents sunshine and happiness

The reason Squidward is sad all the time is because he's blue-colored which represents gloom and sadness

He’s based on a kitchen sponge, and th colours of the characters are basic colour theory. At least you thought outside the box.
