It's been a week since I've last posted another edition of my Top 10 lists. Well, the time of peace suffering is over. Let's get another list out, shall we. Finally! We're getting into the better lists, starting off with one of my favorite lists, discussing the very worst of SpongeBob's Fifth Season, followed by my picks for the very best of SpongeBob's fifth Season. These were written from May 16th 2017-June 3rd 2017. Here we go!
__________________________________________________________________________________________

No doubt about it, every show has its failures. Sometimes those failures can be bad, sometimes they can be horrendous. As time moves on, shows are likely to have a higher chance of having a bad episode. While this seemed to be the case in SpongeBob's fourth season, the bad episodes weren't all that awful. There were actually some likable qualities to those bad episodes. But, when it comes to obnoxious, annoying, downright frustrating, terrible episodes, these seemed to have really started in SpongeBob's Fifth Season. Trust me, while this Season does have some pretty great episodes, there are also some pretty awful episodes. So, let's start this countdown, for the Top 10 Worst Season 5 SpongeBob episodes. Keep in mind, this'll be based off my opinion, not to mention how I view the quality of the episode to be, so there are definitely going to be certain episodes that I rank worse than others on the list, due to the greater lack of quality it has compared to other episodes. Let's get started!

10. A Flea in Her Dome
Original Airdate: 8-1-2007
Plot: Sandy returns home from Texas. But, during her "Welcome Home" party, she brings along a nasty little surprise.
Main Characters: SpongeBob, Sandy, Patrick, Fleas
Fun Fact: This marks the second time an episode centers around a land insect (The previous being a caterpillar/butterfly

Not even fond memories of watching this episode can save it from being on this list. This episode has plenty of issues with it. I mean, I believe this episode means well. The plot is actually a pretty creative concept. The closest thing we've ever really delve into (Up until this point) regarding Sandy being a squirrel had to do with hibernation. Other than that, none of her squirrel characteristics were ever explored. Until now.

The idea of Sandy getting fleas is a pretty good one, I'm not going to lie. The execution in this episode though, is pretty bad. I don't know what exactly went wrong. The plot didn't go off track, but it didn't seem to do well. Maybe it's the horrendous images of fleas that bothers me, who knows? The episode just seems to miss its mark on being a great episode. The comedy in this episode, however, is actually pretty good. There are a lot of jokes that I find to be quite funny in this episode from "I drawed a horsie" to Patrick devising a plan, only to lead up to him eating an apple from Sandy's tree. There are a lot of really funny jokes in this episode, and I enjoy the concept that was explored.

So why is it on the list? Well, I think it has to do with the wasted amount of time this episode spends. "On what?" you may ask. Well, a lot of the episode is Patrick, Sandy, and SpongeBob taking turns dealing with the flea. It's annoying, and can be somewhat painful to watch. The more enjoyable moments in this episode just don't seem to drag on as much as this moment. It's an Okay episode, but I feel as though it could be a lot better.

9. Battle of Bikini Bottom
Original Airdate: 11-23-2007
Plot: SpongeBob and Patrick battle each other. It's being clean vs. being filthy.
Main Characters: SpongeBob, Patrick
Fun Fact: The Battle of Bikini Bottom occurred as a result of a certain Sea Star refusing to wash his hands.

You know, I don't mind this episode. In fact, I actually admire it, because there's really no unlikable aspects this episode has to offer. However! It has to be one of the most unmemorable episodes in the entire series! When I think of a great episode in this Season, I think of Roller Cowards. When I think of an awful episode in this Season, I think of To Love a Patty. When I think of a likable, okay episode, I think of The Original Frycook. When I think of an unlikable, okay episode, I think of Fungus Among Us. This, I don't think anything about it, because it's just so forgetful! There's nothing at all that stands out in this episode, outside of the whole "battle" aspect. And while I believe they could've done a much better job writing this (Frankly, it would've made a better GAME than an episode), it still strikes me as an interesting episode. The premise however, was really poorly executed. It would've been an AMAZING episode, if they would've done a much more unique, and original battle (Let's say a civil war breaks out in Bikini Bottom. Sure, you can't have it too dark, but come on. There were more interesting sequences in PICTURE DAY than this episode. Picture Day, for goodness sake!). Instead, they decided to have a much lamer, joke driven theme, Clean vs. Filth. I think is an alright plot, it's not the worst (I swear, a Chum Bucket v. Krusty Krab plot would've been lame), but it's just not that good of a concept. The execution of it is done in a mediocre, and forgetful way, while the only things you can remember are hit or miss jokes. The jokes in this episode aren't the worst, in fact there are some I found funny like the one about Mr. Krabs chasing Patrick after SpongeBob saying Patrick was digging for gold (Although it sounds funnier the way I worded it, compared to the actual execution of the joke. This episode means well, but it just feels that it's been done all wrong. I did like the interesting twist they pulled to finish the battle, but it wasn't enough to make this an interesting episode.

8. Good Ol' Whatshisname
Original Airdate: 7-23-2007
Plot: Mr. Krabs holds a contest between his employees. They have to know the names of every customer. But, the winner will be determined by whoever can guess the name of a mysterious customer.
Main Characters: Squidward, SpongeBob, What Zit Tooya, Mr. Krabs
Fun Fact: This is the third time in the series Patrick has ended up in jail (The previous two in Life of Crime and SpongeBob Meets the Strangler)

This one, I've never actually hated. In fact, I used to really like this episode. Unfortunately, regardless of my liking for it, I can still understand why exactly this episode is so bad it deserves to be on this list. You see, for the majority of the episode, the episode is focused on Squidward trying to one-up SpongeBob (Who happens to know all the customer's names). This is fine and all (In fact, it's the best part of the episode), but for some reason, the actual main plot doesn't kick in, until around the time when the episode is halfway over. Halfway over! I mean, it is a short, so I will give it some slack, but the fact that we went through this completely USELESS plot about Squidward trying to one-up SpongeBob is just so irritating! I mean, yeah, it is an entertaining part of the episode, with some pretty funny visual gags, but this part was hardly needed! In fact, Mr. Krabs HIMSELF even states that this was pointless (Since he wasn't keeping track). All that time...wasted. But the actual main plot? Oh, it's much worse. It's so awkward, and unfunny, and it just feels as if it was a conversation between an irritable old man, and an annoying stranger. That's the type of situations I don't want to witness in a cartoon. The type where you run into someone who just won't stop annoying you. I wouldn't care less if this was comical, but it's not. It's completely unfunny. Squidward goes to great measures trying to find out the name (Which, by the way, turns out the fish's name was in fact, What Zit Tooya). A lot of people generally hate this joke, but I honestly like it. It's a plot twist I never actually saw coming when I was little. Sure, its ridiculous, and is kind of a sad excuse for a plot twist, but it got me. It's actually kind of clever. This name was hinted earlier (But of course, the delivery made it seem as if this guy was so grumpy, he wouldn't bother telling Squidward his name. Then again, I'd be grumpy if I had a name like that). So, this episode just feels kind of useless. The "other" plot twist I don't really find to be that frustrating, and it is an actually funny joke to me, but the fact that they just ripped a hilarious gag from SpongeBob Meets the Strangler, and put it right in at the end of the episode is just pure laziness! I mean, the joke made sense in SpongeBob Meets the Strangler, because it was hinted earlier that Patrick was going to turn himself in, so it was a hilarious comeback, and extension to Patrick thinking he's the Strangler. In this episode, though, Patrick appears randomly without any reason why, and is just there to be there. Kind of like this episode.

7. Night Light
Original Airdate: 7-30-2007
Plot: SpongeBob becomes afraid of the dark, and decides to stuff his house with all possible night lights he can get.
Main Characters: SpongeBob, Patrick, Mermaidman, Barnacle Boy, The Moth
Fun Fact: This is the first major appearance of Mermaidman & Barnacle Boy in an episode without their names in the title card.

Yeah, you read this right. Mermaidman & Barnacle Boy appear in an episode about SpongeBob stuffing his house with night lights? Yeah, that's...correct...

A recurring trends with bad episodes on this list is that they tend to be completely pointless, and have no logical explanation as to why they exist. I mean sure, on paper, or on storyboard these episodes may seem like a good idea, but watching it, oh boy, they stink! This episode is one I used to despise, in fact, I used to hate it A LOT.

I used to believe this episode was completely pointless. And, I can still stand by that opinion. It felt like the writers were running out of ideas for Night Light gags, but still had plenty of time left to fill up the episode. So, what do they do? The only logical thing to do.

SHOVE IN A RANDOM MERMAIDMAN & BARNACLE BOY SUBPLOT!

Honestly, honestly, I just have absolutely no idea where this concept came from! It felt like the writers had plenty of room left, so they decided "Hey, let's put Mermaidman & Barnacle Boy in the episode! That'll take up time!". This feels like such a lazy way to abandon the main plot (Which obviously should've been a 4 minute short instead!), and I really can't excuse that. I'm not really as furious with this episode like I used to be, considering how entertaining the MM&BB subplot is. I'm going to be honest, I actually really like the MM&BB subplot. It was very entertaining, and the newly introduced villain was actually very memorable. The scenes were funny, and well choreographed for certain moments. Sure, even though I like this scene, it is still a very lazy way to get out of the main plot of this episode. The main plot is even worse. It's not funny, pretty lame, and contains one of the scariest things I have ever seen in a SpongeBob episode.

Thanks for terrifying me SpongeBob, thanks for terrifying me.

6. Atlantis SquarePantis
Original Airdate: 11-12-2007
Plot: SpongeBob and his friends go to Atlantis, after uncovering the ancient medallion that leads to Atlantis. Here, each one of the gang want to see a specific thing (Including a certain stowaway).
Main Characters: SpongeBob, Patrick, Plankton, Lord Royal Highness, Sandy, Squidward, Mr. Krabs
Fun Fact: This episode was originally intended to be just a standard, 11 minute long episode.

Ah yes, one of the worst SpongeBob specials of all time. Let's rip this one apart shall we. We all know Atlantis SquarePantis has its faults. In fact, there are so many faults with this special, that I'm not going to waste my time going over such detail over a bad TV movie. So, I'll summarize the bad qualities this movie contains.

-Most episodes, the songs are really good, and a highlight. The songs in this special are unmemorable, poorly written, and can be a bore listening to.

-The movie doesn't even focus on the endless possibilities the setting of Atlantis can offer. Instead, it primarily focuses on things the characters particularly enjoy, and how the blends into Atlantis.

-David Bowie guest stars, but is the only main character not to sing. This has to be one of the biggest missed opportunities in cartoon history.

-The Patchy Segments are so weird, and trippy. Rather than the hilarious low-budget styled kids television show that it used to be formatted in, instead, we get a surreal plotlight that makes 0 sense.

-Aliens. Seriously. Aliens. Who thought this was a good idea to include in the Patchy Segments!?

-The Patchy Segments feel wasted, dried out, and painful to watch.

-I can't recall a single joke that's funny in this special.

-The best part about this special is how visually appealing certain parts of it is. Mr. Krabs' song is horrible, but the visuals to it are awesomely creative. The reason I love Sandy's song is because of the awesome 8-bit like video game visuals. Plankton's song, oh goodness, those visuals are great!

-The ending song had a great performance from SpongeBob. But the rest of the song stunk.

-Back in Encino is the best song in this movie. Period. And that's pathetic since it's the only song that's outside of the main SpongeBob segments. It's not sung by any of the characters, either!

-The part where Patchy meets SpongeBob is hilariously terrible.

-The sudden shift of moods from Lord Royal Highness is unbearable to watch.

-Mr. Krabs, Sandy, and Squidward are all useless characters.

-IT WAS ORIGINALLY GOING TO BE AN 11 MINUTE EPISODE! WHY NICKELODEON!? WHY DID YOU MESS THIS THING UP, BY FORCING IT TO BECOME AN OVERHYPED SPECIAL!? WHY!?!?!?

*Ahem*

Yeah, this isn't the worst of the Season. In fact, I find it kind of overhated, considering how many people loathe this episode (Same with Choir Boys). It's justified for this episode to be dissed though. It's a really bad episode, and if you hadn't noticed had tons of missed potential, too many songs (I don't care if there's a lot of songs. Just make them be GOOD songs!), no funny jokes, and did I mention useless moments filling in the WASTED POTENTIAL! I'm just disgusted with how awesome this episode could've been, if it took a different direction, instead.

5. Money Talks
Original Airdate: 7-31-2007
Plot: Mr. Krabs sells his soul to the Flying Dutchman in exchange for having the power to talk to money.
Main Characters: Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob, The Flying Dutchman, Money
Fun Fact: This is the Flying Dutchman's only appearance in Season 5.

Boring. Boring. Boring. I've seen boring things before. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (The TV Series) is a prime example of something so boring that I'd rather be watching The Problem Solverz instead. Money Talks isn't that. It's boring, but it's not too boring. That allows it to be just terrible enough for it to avoid being skipped out of sheer boredom, yet you still think of watching it as a time waster.

The plot sounds alright, but the execution, once again, is missed. Of course, money is money, and what does it want? It wants to be SPENT! Come on, that is such a boring conflict! They couldn't have made the money actually interesting? Maybe have them form an army to take down coins? Something creative? Something interesting? Something that's not done every single day in society? No? Money wants to be spent. That's all it can really say, now can't it?

This episode does have good potential, but the writers decided to dig deep into Mr. Krabs' biggest fear, spending money. And the episode doesn't even end on a good note! Krabs tries to reverse the curse, but a loop hole forces him to sell his soul, regardless. But, as it turns out, Krabs already sold his soul to a bunch of other gouls. What a cheapstake. The episode isn't frustrating, or annoying (In fact, I did like the one joke about how Patrick, SpongeBob, and Krabs dressed up in the mall), it's just a useless pile of nothingness. It starts, and goes nowhere.

4. Spongehenge
Original Airdate: 11-23-2007
Plot: SpongeBob is forced to live in a cave, until he can find a way out, into the windy world, avoiding Jellyfish attracted to the music of the wind blowing through his pores.
Main Characters: SpongeBob, Jellyfish, Spongehenge Statues
Fun Fact: This episode parodies the famous Stonehenge statues.

You thought the Krusty Krab Training Video ended on a bizarre note. Well, that's NOTHING compared to the monstrosity of this episode!

I don't even know. I don't even know what to say about this episode. This has to be the utmost bewildering piece of animation from SpongeBob! At least Squidward in Clarinetland was a trippy parody of Alice in Wonderland. This is a story with an element similar to the famous Stonehenge statues (If you couldn't guess from the title).

My question is...why? Why would such an episode like this one be created? Did the writers want to branch out, and have a more dramatic story driven episode? If so, I applaud them for branching out, but the result just baffles me as to how this even got created.

The majority of the episode itself is actually quite interesting. In fact, it's a pretty great episode, on its own. The whole element of Jellyfish stalking SpongeBob because of the musical wind was a genius idea, and there's even plenty of well choreographed suspenseful scenes. That, I can appreciate. But, I will admit Patrick is pretty obnoxious in his scene.

As for the scenes with SpongeBob in the cave, it's not the best scenes, but it certainly entertains me from a perspective of viewing the story, and the story only. There's a sparse amount of jokes, but generally the good jokes are actually really funny. As much as these scenes drag on, I can appreciate how it actually seemed realistic, with a first attempt failure, only to lead to much more powerful, better attempt that succeeds.

But, if there's one thing. One the biggest shocks in SpongeBob's history. An ending so surreal, and unexplainable, that it freaked me out to no end when I first saw it...this ending, just ruins the episode, and makes it ultimately pointless.

https://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=zZuEjJCb%2B6SolGxPWVVyLixEnrt8exeQ09o%2BnMUAo0U%3D

What even is this scene!? SpongeBob returns to the Krusty Krab, all happy to get back to his normal life, but apparently he's been gone so long that it's been completely abandoned, and it seems all life surrounding it has stopped.

What. What. WHAT EVEN IS THIS!?

A completely confusing ending, finishing the episode on such a jarring note, that I can hardly comprehend what happened, upon watching it. I get this is supposed to be a more dramatic episode, but that ending...it's just bewildering. There's really no logical explanation to it. It's just there for shock value, and trust me, it was shocking when I first saw it. I really hate that, because this could be a decent episode without it. The ending just makes the episode feel kind of pointless, as SpongeBob is now forced to wander the seas, in search of something new to thing he loved the most. Even worse, no one was there. Mr. Krabs, Squidward, Patrick, they could all be deceased. But these are only theories, because I still have absolutely no idea how the Krusty Krab got into such a state! Oh yeah, the alien ending, although creative, it feels as if, this was the only reason why the episode was produced. As some sort of explanation as to how a mysterious set of stone statues were created. I've always hated this episode, from the instance I first watched it. NEXT!

3. To Love a Patty
Original Airdate: 7-26-2007
Plot: SpongeBob falls in love with a Krabby Patty, whom he names, Patty.
Main Characters: SpongeBob, Patty, Squidward, Mr. Krabs
Fun Fact: This is the only episode in the series SpongeBob has actually fallen in love with someone.

What can I really say? This has to be one of the biggest examples of SpongeBob going out of character in this series (Another example comes soon...very soon...). Right off the bat, I can say this premise is ridiculously dumb. There's no real need for a plot like this, unless it falls back on funny jokes about how awkward it is for SpongeBob to be in love with a Krabby Patty. But do we have that in this episode? No. Instead, we have "Character development" between SpongeBob, and Patty's relationship, and how much SpongeBob cares for Patty over all other characters.
18243366-Smiley-Vector-Illustration-Puzzled-Face-Stock-Vector-cartoon.jpg

I have become so desperate at this point, that I have to express my reaction to this using stock clip art.

There's nothing, NOTHING MORE can describe how ridiculous this episode is, than looking at the actual episode plot itself.

There's a very good reason why Stephen Hillenburg doesn't want SpongeBob to have a girlfriend. And after this mess, I'm glad SpongeBob was never given a girlfriend. I mean, sure, if Sandy was made SpongeBob's girlfriend, that'd make sense. But the stories that would branch off from this concept would be disastrous, so I'm definitely glad the Sponge shall remain single. This episode is the closest thing you'll get to SpongeBob being in a relationship, and it's just weird.

Not weird as in a good weird, like Ren & Stimpy faces, or Adult Swim surreal weird, but more like a bad weird like Fanboy & Chum Chum characters, or Problem Solverz villains.

SpongeBob is just so out of character in this episode, I can hardly even scratch the surface of this issue! Right off the bat, SpongeBob has never dated anyone else in the entire series. He practiced a date with Squidward, but that's it. This is the only time we see SpongeBob in a relationship, and it's just awkward.

The moment SpongeBob lays his eyes on this patty (Which he created, by the way!), he automatically puts the patty ahead of everything else in his life. His job, his hobbies, his best friend, even his pet! His beloved pet, Gary. SpongeBob is more concerned about this object more than anything else. And I get that, I've had objects that were extremely important to me in the past, but I never treated them the way SpongeBob does.

He treats her like an equal, and really, that's hardly doing anything for this episode's quality. The writers were obviously attempting to make this comical, considering how silly the idea is, but it just doesn't work. Nothing humorous, nor witty comes out of this scenario. It's just SpongeBob treating Patty superior to everything else. Goodness, even when I DID used to like this episode, I still never found this funny. I didn't even know the scenes were supposed to be funny! It's one of the biggest failures in terms of comedy this series ever had. Granted, at least it does make sense why it'd be there for comedic purposes (Unlike some other episodes I know).

SpongeBob is a naive character. He is, he always has been. His character is like an innocent child, who sometimes can act both immature, and mature. But, in the end, SpongeBob acts like a kid at heart. There's no reason he'd venture out, and fall in love. This is why he's so out of character! There's no way SpongeBob would automatically fall in love with (Mind you, a KRABBY PATTY!) right on the spot. There'd need be some bonding, chemistry between the two (I can't believe I'm saying this about SpongeBob and a sandwich), give SpongeBob a proper reason why he'd fall in love with this patty! It's completely unrealistic (Even for SpongeBob standards), and is an absolute waste of time.

2. Breath of Fresh Squidward
Original Airdate: 7-26-2007
Plot: After getting electrocuted by an electric fence, Squidward becomes extremely positive. But, SpongeBob becomes jealous, after Squidward takes SpongeBob's place in just about everything that's important to him.
Main Characters: SpongeBob, Squidward, Patrick
Fun Fact: Looking at SpongeBob's memory book, they've apparently been watching the sunrise with Squidward for nearly a year.

Some people actually like this episode. My question is...HOW!? HOW CAN YOU LIKE SUCH A MONSTROSITY LIKE THIS!? Breath of Fresh Squidward is the prime example of SpongeBob being completely out of character! Heck, that's a trend with the Top 3 (Gee, that's a spoiler!) on this list! But this one, has it even WORSE than Number 3! You thought SpongeBob was ridiculous in To Love a Patty!? Oh, you ain't seen nothing yet!

The episode actually starts off quite well. It begins with a gag about SpongeBob and Patrick enjoying the sunrise in Squidward's bedroom (Which they've been doing for ages, apparently). This is actually a really funny joke, and I have to give the writers credit for this one, it's a hilarious, memorable joke, and a great way to kick off the episode!

So, Squidward decides to build an electric fence...he gets shocked...becomes positive...blah, blah, blah. The first half of this episode I can tolerate. i believe it to be a pretty great episode. It was pleasant witnessing Squidward be on SpongeBob and Patrick's side of attitude for once, and I really thought the montage was cute. But alas, things turn, and go COMPLETELY downhill once the second half of the episode kicks in.

Squidward's positivity causes him to be at first widely criticized (For no explained reason!), but suddenly, as fast as Nick decided to renew this show for a 10th and 11th Season, everyone praises the new Squidward. Seriously!?

There are so many things wrong with this.

First of all, there's no given reason why Squidward is receiving hate for being nice. Maybe people are freaked out, considering how grumpy he is, but come on, being criticized for giving a kid a free hat, that's ridiculous. Let's back things up, first.

Squidward is seen to be constantly helpful to SpongeBob in a funny, and entertaining montage. But, the moment Squidward tries to help out with SpongeBob at work (Which is SpongeBob's favorite thing to do...work at the Krusty Krab), SpongeBob becomes defensive, and refuses to allow Squidward work with him. Wait, what!? This is the same Sponge who rubbed a piece of paper against Squidward, just...because it pleased him? This is the same Sponge who is constantly wanting to chat with Squidward during work. But now, you prevent Squidward from working with you? I mean, I guess that's alright, considering how much SpongeBob loves his job, but then again...

In The Algea's Always Greener, SpongeBob was promoted to working Co-Cashier, and seemed to love it, while Squidward envied it (Something which is in character). This is very hard to analyze, but my best guess on this issue is that SpongeBob feeds off of Squidward's grumpy attitude? I have no idea, but regardless, SpongeBob is FULL of ego in these scenes. When Squidward makes Krabby Patties himself, SpongeBob attempts to throw them away (Because Squidward made them). This is pathetic, and completely out of SpongeBob's character.

Never, would he EVER criticize Squidward for making Krabby Patties. In fact, he PRAISED Squidward for filling in for him during Pickles, so explain to me how this reaction SpongeBob gets to Squidward's patties is justified?

Then, out of nowhere, Krabs implies Squidward might be as good as SpongeBob at cooking. Uh, why? Maybe it's because Squidward didn't burn the patties for once, but considering how there's no continuity within this episode, that's likely not the case.

Later, Krabs then praises Squidward for ketchup dimples he put on a Krabby Patty. Before hand, Krabs asks angrily who made the dimples, and SpongeBob FRAMES Squidward for it! Okay, this is just WAY too far out of character, and we're not even at the worst part of the episode! SpongeBob lying is just the ultimate example of him being out of character.

SpongeBob even said in a later episode, Kracked Krabs, that lying is WRONG. He says that to Mr. Krabs! A character who HE lies to in this episode. And sure, while episodes contradict themselves all the time, this time, it was completely unjustified. SpongeBob has no reason why he should lie (Other than the fact that he's jealous of Squidward, and SpongeBob's hardly shown jealousy before).

Squidward becomes employee of the month, so Patrick holds a party at his place.

Squidward seems to be the life of the party, getting everyone excited, and happy, while SpongeBob mopes over not getting the Employee of the Month award.

But then, SpongeBob freaks out, when he sees Squidward Pogo Dancing with Patrick. Seeing that his best friend is hanging out with Squidward, SpongeBob rages with fury, after all the things he loved was taken away from him (You know, if he had Patty, he wouldn't need those things :frenny: ). He then yells...screams, and forces Squidward out of the party unjustly.

https://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=Ko%2Fk3Ro7Vcu3vJc5qCAHn7vqnOQhomD8w%2B2ApWqTMp4%3D

Everything is wrong with this scene. I get it SpongeBob, you're jealous. But the SpongeBob way to do things would've involved SpongeBob joining in on the fun with his 2 best friends, so this...this is just a mess.

SpongeBob then realizes he was a little too hard (Little. Everything is wrong with that word choice) on Squidward, and decides to apologize.

"Squidward, I just want to say I'm sorry for being so selfish, and yelling at you and all. I mean, who cares about cooking, pictures on the wall, and dancing. We're bigger than that, right? So, if you're willing to let bygones be bygones, then I'm willing to meet you half way. What do you say, buddy? Put 'er there, pal."

This goes against pretty much everything SpongeBob felt in the Second half. I'm glad the writers gave Squidward some justice for being treated poorly, but it just can't live up to the pain, and emotional suffering Squid went through. It's just as painful for him, as it was to SpongeBob in Fools in April (Like that episode, this one has a character being treated poorly, despite doing nothing wrong).

There's just so many things awful about this episode that I can't stand it, I just can't stand it. Such a horrendous episode, with so many unlikable, and contradicting aspects. Definitely one of my least favorites of not only the Season, but the series.

Before we move on to the biggest time waster of the Season, here are some honorable mentions.

1. Fungus Among Us

It's not really that bad. A lot of people despise it for how "gross" it is when it comes to the fungus, but at this point, it's appearance is harmless. It's more of a coding, than a gross texture. The plot is actually pretty interesting, and moves along quick, too, and the execution isn't that bad.

2. The Krusty Sponge

Yeah, there are some moments that are really unnecessary, and bad, but a lot of the episode is actually pretty good, especially the humor, there's tons of hilarious jokes.

3. Banned in Bikini Bottom

A mediocre episode. It's not that awful, it's just okay. There's a lot of funny jokes, but the plot seems to have an overall poor quality to it.

4. Boat Smarts

Not as bad as a lot of people think. It's a unique episode, not to mention there are some pretty funny jokes. I like how this episode branched out of the normal format (Something the Krusty Krab Training Video succeeded in).

And now, you waited for it, and I got it. The Number 1 Worst Episode from SpongeBob's Fifth Season is...

1. Waiting
Original Airdate: 2-19-2007
Plot: SpongeBob waits for a toy to arrive in the mail.
Main Characters: SpongeBob, Patrick
Fun Fact: This is the first 7 minute long episode in the series (Help Wanted was 8 minutes and 16 seconds long, and Gary Takes a Bath was 6 minutes and 31 seconds long).

My, my. What do we have here? Such an unbearable waste of time, that I'd rather spend a few hours looping Squidwood, I Was a Teenage Gary, Dumped, and Born Again Krabs. At least in those episodes I can tell what exactly the writers were trying to accomplish. This one, I have not the slightest idea!

This episode is just so bizarre to think about how this even became an actual episode! It just baffles me how one thought this was a good idea! The concept of this episode means well, but the final product...someone should've stepped in to stop it, and at least rewrite it! This episode is just such a waste of time! Like a lot of Season 5 bad episodes, this one has one of the characters be portrayed out of character, and an overall sense of wasting your time watching this filth! What can I say about waiting? You're either bored with the tired gags, frustrated at how unlikable SpongeBob is, irritated at how painfully slow this episode progresses, or confused why you're wasting your time watching this!

SpongeBob is such an unlikable jerk in this episode! He just continues to grow more, and more impatient for his toy, as each minute in the episode passes. No joke, almost all of this episode is in front of SpongeBob's house. Speaking of which, there are no jokes. It's just SpongeBob yelling at characters, or flipping out. That's it. That's just it.

This scenario has been done before in a much better, funnier way, with the Bus Scene in Rock Bottom. SpongeBob is angry that he keeps missing the bus, but that was justified. He's in a mysterious place he wants to get out of as fast as possible, but in this case, he's just acting like an impatient baby expecting his toy to show up any minute. And the "jokes" are just painful to watch. The whole Birthday scene was completely idiotic, and can only manage to entertain someone under the age of 8. It's a horrible, useless episode, that has no reason to exist. It's a mix of everything that makes a SpongeBob episode a Horrendous episode. The pacing, the jokes, the characters, everything is just awful in this episode. The ending was lame as well, with the "plot-twist" being only somewhat shocking, but ultimately a terrible way to wrap up this terrible piece of media.

It's definitely the worst episode of this show's Fifth Season!

That being said, you may believe I hate Season 5. On the contrary, I really like Season 5! There are so many good episodes in this Season, not to mention a good amount of Great episodes. While Season 5's bad side is awful to no extent, its good side produces some very entertaining, and enjoyable stories. Stay tuned for the Top 10 Best Season 5 SpongeBob episodes.
_________________________________________________________________________________________

Out of all the Seasons in the Post-Movie era (Being, Seasons 4-8. Not counting 9 since it's half Post Movie, half Post Prequel (I call it a prequel, because it's certainly not a sequel, and I think the name "Post Second Movie" it too long), Season 5 is my favorite Season. There are so many entertaining, and enjoyable episodes, I really like this Season! It has plenty of bad episodes, not to mention some awful, and even a horrendous episode! But the best of Season 5 truly contains some of the best episodes of the entire series! So let's count down my picks for the Top 10 Best Season 5 SpongeBob episodes. And keep in mind, this is based off both my opinion, and how I deem the quality of the episode to be. So let's get started!

10. Mermaidman vs. SpongeBob
Original Airdate: 8-3-2007
Plot: Plankton mind controls Mermaidman & Barnacle Boy, and controls them like robots in order to attract customers to the Chum Bucket.
Main Characters: Plankton, Mermaidman, Barnacle Boy, SpongeBob
Fun Fact: This episode parodies McDonald's play areas and Happy Meals.

This is a delightful episode. While the actual battle between Mermaidman and SpongeBob is quite short, and probably the worst part of the episode, I can forgive that for how great this episode is. There's a lot of comedy in this episode that works! Squidward being tormented by kids, the wild & crazy kids being locked up in the ball house, Plankton implanting dandruff on MM&BB, only to realize Barnacle Boy already has dandruff, there are just tons of funny jokes, and gags within this episode! Not to mention, I do enjoy the atmosphere of the Krusty Krab in this episode. I think it's interesting to see how commercial it appears, what with the Play Area, not to mention how this episode parodies Happy Meals as well. This episode certainly is an all around entertaining episode. The plot is original, and is a pretty good concept. There are tons of funny jokes, and lines. Plenty of memorable moments, making a great episode. It's not too simple, but it's not too complex. Sure, the battle between SpongeBob & MM&BB was weak, and short, but the rest of the episode is pretty enjoyable. There's nothing much to it, really. I just really like this episode.

9. Sing a Song of Patrick
Original Airdate: 2-19-2007
Plot: Patrick enters a song writing contest, and wins. Only one problem. His song is awful.
Main Characters: Patrick, SpongeBob
Fun Fact: This is the only non-special in the Season to feature a song.

Out of all the songs in this show, I Wrote This has to be one of the greatest, and funniest songs in the show's history. I LOVE this song! The lyrics are really clever, and totally fit Patrick's character! In fact, I love this song so much, I even memorized the lyrics!

Honestly, I think it's the ridiculous song that Patrick writes that saves this episode. The writers definitely knew what they were doing when writing this episode. First off, the plot itself is pretty original, and I do think it's a good idea for a plot. But the execution of it was brilliant! The pacing, and the humor of this episode is genius! The song is so catchy, memorable, hilarious, fits Patrick's character, and has great instrumental music to back it up! The song doesn't even sound awful! It's only the lyrics (Which is great, because trust me, nothing is worse than an intentionally awful song that has just as painful music as its bad lyrics. Outside of the brilliant song, the episode itself is still very funny. There's a lot of great, and entertaining jokes, like the smoke from Patrick thinking, to the cutaway to the band's grave after they passed away. Ultimately, it's a fun episode, with tons of good jokes, a pretty good plot, and an awesome song.

8. The Two Faces of Squidward
Original Airdate: 11-23-2007
Plot: After having his face smashed by a door, Squidward's face miraculously becomes handsome. But, the citizens of Bikini Bottom enjoy it a little too much.
Main Characters: Squidward, SpongeBob
Fun Fact: Squidward's face is slammed by the door a total of nine times to reach his ultimate handsome state.

There's no ignoring this episode! This episode is brilliant in so many ways. Right off the bat, it's an interesting premise for things to finally go Squidward's way (Triggered by something bad that happened to Squidward). Rather than go the route of having one of his skills be enhanced (Like his clarinet playing), we get a more interesting premise. Squidward becomes extremely handsome, and EVERYONE in Bikini Bottom loves him! The plot allows tons of great jokes to take place, particularly themed around "Hero Worshiping" (Something that's hardly done in comedy, especially in cartoons). The absurd lengths some of the fans of Squidward goes to, to witness his glorious appearance (Or at least take something he owns) are absolutely hilarious! The plot that seems to break away from a usual SpongeBob plot allows for a breath of fresh (Ironic word choice, isn't it), new jokes to be used. Not only does this episode have a lot of funny jokes, and moments, but this episode really relies on visual gags. And the best part is, all of the visual gags work. I don't think I noticed really a single flaw in any of the visual gags. Just the exaggeration of the hero worship alone really helps make this episode funny, but I think the absolute highlight of the episode has to be none other than...

https://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=OyosulseFLNPtTXNbq%2FmwT%2Fe7TFJGL0N84c%2F6XrfWLM%3D

The SUPER handsome Squidward! The fact that the writers pulled this surprise totally out of left field is amazing! Just the face itself is hilarious enough to be a highlight, but the pacing of its reveal is super clever! Not to mention, I love the foreshadowing with the falling shoe earlier in the episode, because it was an unexpected (Upon first watching), and an overall good way to solve the solution in a unique way (Not to mention it allows this beauty to exist).

This episode is just perfect in every way! I truly do love this episode!

7. The Inmates of Summer*
Original Airdate: 11-23-2007
Plot: SpongeBob & Patrick go on a prison boat, mistaking to for SpongeBob's Summer Camp's boat.
Main Characters: SpongeBob, Warden, Patrick, Prisoners
Fun Fact: The name of SpongeBob's camp is Sun Fun Island.

It's very rare for me to get nostalgic about a SpongeBob episode that's not from the first 3 Seasons. Yet, here I am, being nostalgic about this gem. The Inmates of Summer is an underrated gem. I think what really sparked my likening for this episode is the fact that it used to rerun on Nick all the time in the late 2000s, and then it pretty much stopped reruning, to the point where I saw it for the first time in years, merely a few years ago. This episode is really overlooked, and I think it deserves some appreciation.

First off, the plot itself is funny. It really does open the gate for a lot of funny jokes. Just the idea of SpongeBob & Patrick (2 very naive, innocent fish), at a prison camp...by accident...sounds like it'd make a really good episode. And it does! I really love this episode. There are tons of great, memorable moments in this episode, from SpongeBob dissing the real Camp Boat on the Prison boat, to SpongeBob's polite, cheerful response to the extremely tough warden. There's even some gross out humor I like in this episode. I think the gag where SpongeBob & Patrick drank the chum they were covered in as punishment for a few days is funny! It's a very memorable part of the episode too. The episode does a great job with its layout as well. I can totally imagine the beginning being dragged out for a long time (Let's say, Patrick trying to remember what exactly he wanted to tell SpongeBob, while the Camp boat leaves), but no. The writers jumped right on into the plot, and allowed a lot of comical irony to be placed into the episode. Then, we have loads of jokes revolving around the 2, and the warden. Afterwards, finally we reach our climax, where SpongeBob decides to write a musical to entertain the warden (Which is done in an interesting sequence, mind you). The prisoners devise a plan to escape the camp on the boat that SpongeBob & Patrick built for the musical (Okay, clever). Finally we get to the song. My, oh my, I love this song. Together has to be one of my favorite songs in this series. It's catchy (Of course, it's only a few lyrics), memorable, and entertaining. I love that the warden grew soft from the song, comically crying to it. Of course a genius mini-plot twist prevents the prisoners from breaking out (The boat was merely a facade). The ending punishment is really funny too.

Ultimately, this is one of the best episodes of the Season. Something about these one-off general characters in SpongeBob, they're usually written so well. I don't know what it is, they always end up as interesting, entertaining characters. Maybe because they sometimes are shown to be a multi-layered character, rather than always be the stereotypical army general.

6. The Krusty Plate*
Original Airdate: 8-1-2007
Plot: SpongeBob goes to extreme lengths to remove a spot that won't come off a dish.
Main Characters: SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs
Fun Fact: Only Krabs and SpongeBob appear in this episode.

Yes, a simple, 4 minute short, is better than 35 other episodes in this season, and there's great reason why. This is just an all in all entertaining short! The plot is simple, and the writers manage to do a great job escalating such a basic plot into something much bigger than it already is. And its execution is done very well. The machine SpongeBob uses to remove the spot on his final attempt is well designed, and I think the writers were very creative when it came to writing the different attempts, primarily the last one. There's also a fair share of comedy in this short too. The flashback to the last time SpongeBob was left to lock up the Krusty Krab is funny, and I really like Mr. Krabs interactions with SpongeBob at the end of the episode. The episode also has a suspenseful mood to it, allowing to be just a solid, great episode. It's definitely one of the best in the season, and ironically enough, I think more effort was put into this episode than Atlantis Squarepantis

5. Krabs à La Mode
Original Airdate: 7-25-2007
Plot: Plankton freezes the Krusty Krab by turning down the thermostat. SpongeBob then influences others with his ice skating, thus turning the Krusty Krab into a skating rink.
Main Characters: Plankton, SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs, Squidward
Fun Fact: This is the second time Plankton has been consumed by Old Man Jenkins.

This episode is generally considered to be the best episode of the season. While I don't agree with that, I do agree it is indeed one of the best. The episode takes a turn from regular "Plankton tries to steal the formula" episodes, and allows for an interesting twist. I enjoy seeing the Krusty Krab in its frozen state, and a lot of entertaining visual gags, and jokes are used as a result of this. I especially like Squidward's character in the episode. Just his reaction to seeing the Krusty Krab frozen is priceless, and I think he's a great strait man in this episode. There's a good amount of jokes in this episode, and I do like the entertaining climax. The serious parts in this episode are well choreographed, and the comedy in this episode is well done. The concept is interesting, and I have to say, it's one really solid episode.

4. Spy Buddies
Original Airdate: 7-23-2007
Plot: Mr. Krabs hires SpongeBob & Patrick to spy on Plankton.
Main Characters: SpongeBob, Patrick, Plankton, Mr. Krabs
Fun Fact: It's that time of the month.

Man, what an exciting episode! Well, by SpongeBob standards, it's exciting. A brilliant parody of spy movies, this is. The intense amount of jokes that parody tropes within spy movies is a pretty large amount, and almost all of them work. From the "Self-Destruct" gag, to the jet pack gag, even the iconic James Bond intro parody, they're all funny. Not to mention, there are even some great quotes as well, especially "I hated the real version of this song.". This episode really breaks away from the regular SpongeBob episode, with a whole new type of genre being used (The spy genre) mixed in with the regular SpongeBob genre. And it's not out of place either, it fits right on in, and the execution is great. The plot itself is interesting, and allows for a lot of entertaining sequences. What I love is that the characters are taking this seriously, while in reality, this episode is anything but serious. It's nonsensical, goofy, contains some entertaining sequences, and is ultimately a really great episode. Definitely one of my favorite episodes in the season, this one always entertains me every time I go back to it.

3. New Digs
Original Airdate: 7-25-2007
Plot: In order to never be late again, SpongeBob moves into the Krusty Krab. His actions later causes chaos at the Krusty Krab.
Main Characters: SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs, Squidward
Fun Fact: This is the first episode to actually show Harld SquarePants angry.

Oh boy, I love this episode. This episode has a very creative plot, and it follows through. It's an entertaining episode, and it's just flat out entertaining to witness the things that drives Krabs closer, and closer over the edge. . It's mostly just entertaining to see the wild antics that take place in the Krusty Krab once SpongeBob moves in. You never know what to expect next, which fills the episode with, not only comedy, but things that actually contribute to the story. SpongeBob's motivations to moving in is perfectly in character, and it definitely makes sense for such an absurd thing to occur. I really like the premise alone, and I think that no matter what, the writers would've done a good job making a story based off this concept. There's not that much too it. It's just simply one ridiculous thing after another. Not to mention, I love Squidward in this episode. His thoughts and feelings on this situation is priceless, and the ending is just hilarious and really wraps a funny, and solid episode.

2. Bucket Sweet Bucket
Original Airdate: 7-27-2007
Plot: Plankton renovates the Chum Bucket, with the help of SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward, while trying to steal the formula.
Main Characters: Plankton, SpongeBob, Patrick, Karen, Squidward
Fun Fact: In the end, the Krusty Krab has an overall medieval theme.

I've always really liked this episode. It's one of the most memorable, and enjoyable episodes of this season. The plot is interesting, as it actually centers around the Chum Bucket building itself, rather than just a standard "Plankton steals the formula" episode. I think this episode was a good way for the writers to think outside of the box, in order to have a different type of episode involving Plankton stealing the formula. I'm just easily entertained by this episode. I love the design of the Krusty Krab at the end of the episode, I love that Squidward was dragged into Plankton's scheme for once, in a very clever manor. The sequences of Patrick & SpongeBob stealing things from the Krusty Krab is entertaining, and well laid out. The plot twist that Krabs had the formula with him on his vacation was unexpecting, and the mystery regarding Krabs' disappearance was intriguing. It's definitely one of the most memorable, and entertaining episodes of the entire season. I really do love this episode.

1. Roller Cowards
Original Airdate: 7-27-2007
Plot: SpongeBob & Patrick go to Glove World to ride the new ride, The Fiery Fist-O-Pain. But, the two struggle to admit to each other that they're scared of riding the coaster.
Main Characters: SpongeBob, Patrick
Fun Fact: Despite being the park's flagship ride, this marks the only official appearance of the Fiery Fist-O-Pain.

One of the best episodes in the series. Period. There's no denying it whatsoever. Roller Cowards is an amazing episode. It is a truly relatable episode, if you've ever been afraid of a ride (In this case roller coasters), and it does manage to actually teach a lesson, in it's overly exaggerated, comedic ways. I truly adore this episode. This is one episode that's stuck with me for years. I'm not nostalgic about it, so that shows even BETTER reason as to why this is one of the best episodes in the Season. Roller Cowards has always been a marvelous, entertaining episode, that I look back on, every time I see a ridiculously, gigantic roller coaster in person. First off, the plot works. SpongeBob & Patrick being afraid of a roller coaster, perfectly fits their character. Alright, alright, good story so far...

But the COMEDY is where this episode is at. I've stressed this a lot in this Top 10. Unlike Season 4, Season 5's best episodes stand out for its comedy. Hardly does it ever shine for a great storyline. While there are really great stories in this season, a lot of the best episodes of this season work from the comedy, and boy, does this episode do such a thing. Like a roller coaster, the comedy in this episode is built from the ground up. Unlike the previous episodes, where the plot can allow there to be comedy, this episode's comedy is really, really, really clever. I haven't such cleverness in an episode's comedy since SpongeBob Meets the Strangler, which was Number 1 on my Top 10 Best Season 3 SpongeBob Episode list. That's how incredible this episode is, that it's on the same level as the best episode of one of the best seasons of this show. This episode has so many highlights. SpongeBob & Patrick's stalling not only helps build their character in this episode, but it also allows for some funny moments to occur. The surreal comedy of SpongeBob's conversation with his icecream, and Patrick with his reflection is bizarre, outlandish, but successfully conveys the plot. The Fiery Fist-O-Pain itself has to be one of the highlights of this episode. It is the exact definition of a scary roller coaster. It has flames, a gigantic drop (That goes above the surface), spine loss, razors, explosive diarrhea, it is a hilariously designed, and exaggerated coaster, and the writers do a marvelous job pulling out different jokes that can be used on this coaster. The suspense builds up in the entire episode with SpongeBob & Patrick's stalls, and attempts to get out of riding the ride, it really makes the ride itself worth it. And even then, the fake-out that the ride was broken was a perfect fake-out, as it actually fooled me at first, but then we got to witness the marvelous ride itself. With other enjoyable moments, like the old man, and Larry's appearance, this episode is just timeless, and is definitely the best episode of SpongeBob's Fifth Season.

(And let's not forget the best part of this episode, one of the funniest scenes in this show's history).

This whole list, and how it stacks up to my own, really sets in the idea of Season 5 being a mixed bag. Every episodes has its love-it-or-hate-it elements, which comes from how the show was starting to give up on its original tone and brand of humour.
I really hope the Season 6 review isn’t as loud as this aswell.
