Why did Aaron Springer's style get much crazier in season 6?

In season 4 his style was fairly indistinguishable from the rest. Good Neighbors doesn't look much different from other season 4 episodes. In season 5 you can notice his stylistic flair impacting the episodes' look more, but not too much so. It's even kinda interesting to look at sometimes.

Then in season 6... I don't know what happened, but he starts drawing SpongeBob with cheeks increasingly often (Dear Vikings almost doesn't have a single frame where his puffed-up cheeks aren't showing) and the facial expressions in general get more and more bizarre. With the exception of House Fancy and Penny Foolish, these tend to be the ugliest-looking episodes. Does anyone know why he suddenly started going overboard? Did he let his creative juices run free or was he simply unrestrained due to not working with a co-director as often?

I don't know why, but I adore Aaron Springer's storyboard work on the show. It's always so dull, but cute.
