Very Sweet And Overlooked Scene

Some people wonder if Spongebob and Patrick really do care about Squidward, or if they entirely annoy him on purpose just to entertain themselves.

One scene I found really striking after re-watching the series as an adult was the ending of "Squidward The Unfriendly Ghost." When Squidward apparently "dies," Spongebob and Patrick both respond fairly gravely, and treat his "funeral" with a surprising amount of dignity... well, by Spongebob and Patrick standards at least.

  • SpongeBob: He's a ghost in denial. He needs us now more than ever.
  • Patrick: You're right. He really needs to get up to the great beyond.

(later)

  • Patrick: There he goes!
  • SpongeBob: Isn't he beautiful?
  • Patrick: How high's he going to go?
  • SpongeBob: All the way, Patrick, up to the great beyond. [both of them wave to Squidward] Goodbye, friend.
  • Patrick: Happy trails!
  • SpongeBob & Patrick: You're welcome!
  • SpongeBob: He's on the other side now.
  • Patrick: Yeah. He's in a better place.

So yeah. Spongebob and Patrick both care about Squidward immensely. More than the show usually acknowledges.

Pretty sweet. This entire episode is overlooked, and pretty funny. One of Season 1's best for sure, IMHO.
I love it, too. Squidward crossed the line, for sure, but he got his comeuppance in a really funny and really surreal way! Plus the episode has some really nice drawings, funny gags, and beautiful background paintings. It's underrated!

That again.
No, no, the other thing!

Why hasn't this episode been nominated for an Oscar?
because 1) the Oscars are for theatrical films, not television

and 2) because the Oscars don't care about animation as an art form

A small detail that I love is SpongeBob smiling and wiping away a tear when the guests arrive. He just wants Squidward to have a beautiful funeral, surrounded by his friends.

I like how he's kind of sniveling at the end when Squidward is floating away. Honestly, I'm surprised he didn't cry MORE in this episode, given its subject matter. Considering what happened in the episode, Spongebob did an AMAZING job of holding it together.
