TV Theme Tunes (Nominations)

I thought maybe we could start a little game type thing here at SBM. In this topic, everyone will post their favourite theme tune(s) and we'll hopefully have a nice little discussion. Optionally you can also add some comments on why you have chosen the theme tunes you have chosen.

Then I'll post another topic where all those theme tunes are put into a poll with a link to hear them and we'll vote and see which one is the most popular.

Here are my two nominations - Cheers and The South Bank Show.

Cheers

This theme is one of my favourite because the lyrics are well written and made so they can be related to by anyone and everyone. Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name. Who doesn't? The theme tune become widely known along with the programme which both became near-instant hits (the series premiere ranked 77th out of 77 shows, but it soon became the number 1 show for most of its seasons, and the finale is in the top 5 most watched finale's in America. NBC seems to have a good run with sitcoms and theme tunes. Let's not forget Friends.

The South Bank Show

For those who don't remember or even know what The South Bank Show is, The South Bank Show was the flagship arts programme on ITV from the 1970s until just a couple of years ago now. The aim of the show was to mix fine art with mainstream culture allowing everyone to enjoy and experience the fact that art wasn't just about paintings. The theme tune mixes classical with modern and is very well made for its time. I've attached my favourite opening title sequence that ever went with the theme; there were dozens over the years.

Always liked the Cheers theme song (and obviously, the show). Never heard of The South Bank Show, but I'm gonna have to look into it.

Some themes might be cool, but not the show - or vice-versa. Here's my "nomination."

ER

Opening credits from the latter part of Season One (after Gloria Rueben had become a main cast member). The show fell off after seasons 8-11 (much like House did after midway through the third season). This is the classic line-up that catapulted George Clooney to super-stardom and struck the perfect balance between interpersonal stories and the real-life drama of an inner-city emergency room. (Okay, I sound a little like a PR guy here.) Basically, season 1 was the nucleus of it all; if any of you ever get a change to watch it (especially the 2-hour pilot)- do.

X-Files

Does this need explanation? Ground breaking show that almost makes you wish there were an alien conspiracy.

Personally, I prefer theme tunes that are just little melodies without lyrics that do a good job of conveying the show's personality.

Hence, these two.

Seinfeld

The Office (U.S.)

I think The Office theme is a great tune, the show can be funny at times too.

Here in crummy UK Comedy Central is like a season behind - but is starting the next season after a season ends. So hopefully we'll catch up soon.

I never understood what Seinfeld was all about - and neither did most Brits judging by the ratings.

Fresh Prince of Bel Air
here's the extended version... this intro is just the best... and I like the show

and the SpongeBob theme song... not even gonna bother finding a link

I also like the Office's theme song

It's a show about nothing.

I'm going to add the old Late Late Show (original RTE version, not the American one on CBS) theme tune in.

Also, I've never watched this show but the theme tune is good so I'll add it in.

Ba ba ba baa, ba ba ba baa, ba baa da da da da da da da da daaa!

And finally, since I've found a new love for Friends, here's... well, Friends.

Too many media files. So there's a link instead.

You have until Saturday 11th to nominate your theme tune, as it will have been one month until the day that I posted this.

Then, I will post a new topic on Sunday with the poll for the options. I'll request the thread to be closed after Saturday but if it isn't just note I won't be taking any nominations after I open the new topic.

I can't believe that no one has nominated The Simpsons' theme yet. It's always been my favorite.
