The rumour that never dies

DadMom AngryPants

Hi, I'm normal.
"Did you know that SpongeBob was originally an adult cartoon? Yeah, it was going to be on Adult Swim."

I've read variations of this this over and over again for years and years. I've even seen parents give it as a reason why they won't let their kids watch the show. I get that most people probably don't care enough to Google it and check for themselves and realize it isn't true, but I still find it pretty annoying. :P

Do you come across this rumour often? Where do you think it originated from?

i don't believe this kind of rumors...

It's like "Stan Pines's going to die this season" rumors, but it's not really real thing.

so i don't buy it.

I've come across this rumor before. It doesn't make sense because in 1999, Adult Swim didn't even exist.

I've also heard a rumor about Ben Bocquelet originally pitching Gumball to Adult Swim, but that was proven fake a long time ago

I've heard this rumor a few times around here. I don't believe it. Whoever originated this so-called "conspiracy" just used their :imagination: IMAGINAAAAATION, and maybe posted this one some webpage or newsgroup, probably archived. It's just pure rubbish. :patgross:

I don't t believe, because there is no real evidence to support that, and was never confirmed by anyone on the show, I don't think. I think someone just made that up somewhere on the internet.

It stems from a true event. Spike TV wanted to make an Adult Party Cartoon-like version of SpongeBob. Both Nick and Stephen Hillenburg both declined within a week of the proposal.

I heard MTV wanted to make an adult cartoon for Spongebob, but the offer was turned down.

Yeah, if i'm not mistaken i think that Stephen and Nickelodeon declined almost immediately because of the failure of Ren and Stimpy APC and that it had already been renewed for a 4th season, also mainly because it would have been small kids watching a lot of the time and you know that the freakin' FCC and Parent's Television Council would've had Spike TV closed down in weeks.

What's the source for Spike TV wanting to make an adult SpongeBob show? I've never heard of that. It sounds highly unlikely. Why would Spike TV propose such a thing to Nick in the first place? Nick and Spike TV are both Viacom so it's not like Nick would have any more control over that decision than Spike.
