So I finally decided to post my very first list. :) This will be my top 5 favorite SpongeBob episodes per season. I'll be covering all 9 seasons, which means that I will be reviewing 45 episodes. I'll just list the episode, and state the writers of the episode, as well as the episode's release date, and I'll even state the ratings given to each episode by SBmania, Pieguyrulz (Currently Season 1-possibly Season 5) and Mr. Enter (Season 4-onwards).

So without further ado, let's begin with Season 1 and #5 on that list!

end

Followed! But why are you doing the Mr. Enter ratings season 4 onwards? He has all of his ratings on his deviantart.

He won't make scorecards for Season 1-3. As a heads up, he considers I Was a Teenage Gary and Dumped as "debatable" and, well, you know the atrocities.

The Paper

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=DjebW7%2FOxHCufKmPWmcO9bSxSQRHbzSXFzNzMXYFIR0%3D

Writers: Chuck Klein, Jay Lender, Mr. Lawrence, Animation: Fred Miller, Creative: Derek Drymon

Release Date: February 14, 2000

SBmania Rating: 8.6

PieGuyRulz Rating: Good

Mr. Enter Rating: N/A

I sort of think of this episode as a prototype of Idiot Box, however this episode is less memorable mostly due to the fact that it only airs during Valentine's Day because of its sister episode. And also because it doesn't have that iconic "IMAGINATION" thing. I actually wouldn't be suprised if most people don't even remember this episode. And that's a shame because this episode is really awesome.

What I like about it most is its really cool concept of how SpongeBob could do all these imaginative things with just a piece of paper, because to him, it's "a gold mine of entertainment" and "a treasure trove of... [not garbage]." And what makes this better is that Squidward actually gets jealous that SpongeBob is having all of this fun with that paper that he used to think was just a piece of garbage, which just shows that Squidward is a fun person deep down, but he just doesn't realize it. This also reminds me of Bubblestand and Snowball Effect, that Squidward ends up realizing that SpongeBob's ways of having fun, are actually, well, FUN.

My favorite imaginative parts of the episode with the paper are: SpongeBob JunglePants, the bullfight, oragami, the paper military airplane, SpongeBob's musical performace, the paper being funnier than Mini Squidward (his first appearance before Squid Wood), and SO MUCH more. And these clever and funny gags are just what make the episode so amazing! All the imaginative and funny things that these writers thought of, that could be done with just a piece of paper, were just plain awesome to watch! And it was really cool to see Squidward trying to do things that are funner than that piece of paper just to prove to SpongeBob that he is fun, and I honestly believe that this is much better to watch than seeing Squidward being annoyed or tortured by SpongeBob's fun, since in this episode, he is just jealous of SpongeBob's fun.

So after Squidward sees all the fun and imagination that SpongeBob can have with that piece of paper, he really wants to have it back. But SpongeBob wants to keep his promise, because he's that honest like that, and Squidward was even willing to give everything that he owns, including his own shirt, to SpongeBob just for that piece of paper. So SpongeBob finally gives in to the promise because of Squidward's generous offer to give him his shirt, that SpongeBob has always liked, and Squidward finally gets the paper back.

Unfortunately, he cannot have fun with it. Why not? Well, it's obvious that Squidward never realized that the paper could be fun, because he doesn't have any imagination, until he's seen SpongeBob, a master of imagination, have fun with it. And when he gets it back, he couldn't get the paper to "work" with it because he has NO imagination. You might feel sorry for him, but he really didn't have to give all of his stuff to SpongeBob, and he can easily ask for them back, and buy another shirt. And he needs to learn to gain some imagination, by the way. He's an artist, for Pete's sake! So yeah, this episode's plot is pretty similar to Idiot Box, but this came first, and is unfortunately less memorable. But I honestly believe that this one is more imaginative than Idiot Box, even though I love both episodes just as much.

So if you don't remember this episode that much, I suggest rewatching it. :) It's a really good SpongeBob and Squidward episode with a lot of IMAGINATION, especially for being a Season 1 episode. It's hard to catch on TV, since it only plays on early February, so you could easily watch it on Pollystreaming, or if you have some SpongeBob DVDs with the episode or buy the episode on iTunes.

Favorite Moment/Quote:

The playback of this scene with flip animation from the paper was just really cool! I can't believe they did that! xD That was such an awesome idea! They even played the same music from the actual scene.

"Take it, SpongeBob. Take it, please. And promise me, no matter how much I may beg, and plead, and cry, don't give that paper back to me...ever!"

This should be in Fan Favorites, so I reported it to move it. Also, if a pre-movie episode isn't I'm With Stupid, Party Pooper Pants and The Great Snail Race (Atrocity), or Dumped and I Was a Teenage Gary (Debatable), the episode is good by Mr. Enter's Scale.

I agree with your opinion on The Paper, it's really well-thought out. Great job!!!

Pickles

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=mmCEB5SA%2BuMxZ2GN8xsTtSLPPAyrPJxGM3LwEIExUpk%3D

Writers: Steve Fonti, Chris Mitchell, Steven Burns, Storyboard: Jay Lender, Animation: Tom Yasumi, Creative: Derek Drymon

Release Date: August 21, 1999

SBmania Rating: 8.5

PieGuyRulz Rating: Good

Mr. Enter Rating: N/A

Now this episode is a very interesting one. I think that it's a very hilarious episode, and has an interesting plot of "SpongeBob losing his memory" (in a different way than getting amnesia in "What Ever Happened to SpongeBob") and forgetting how to make Krabby Patties. And it was great to see a different type of antagonist this time, Bubble Bass, who is pretty much a bully type of character who seems to dislike SpongeBob and want to ruin his career.

As I said, one of the best things about this episode is that it is really funny. Well, if you take a look at the beginning of the episode, it is really hilarious! XD Squidward being a grouchy employee was actually really funny this time, since we didn't actually see his complain or anything, and it was clear that he was being lazy and impatient. And his "comments" were also really funny. The customers being kinda ridiculous, and SpongeBob's unique way of making Krabby Patties was also really funny. Just look at these quotes below to see what exactly I am talking about:

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=7Kh%2FBubLkSzyc4KAXwMVTn7mcB5sflQ288RupLep55s%3D

"Hmmm...uhh...oh, I'll have a... [Squidward takes out pencil and paper] ...no. [Squidward puts pencil and paper away] Maybe... [takes out pencil and paper] ...no. [Squidward puts pencil and paper away] Hmmm...I'll have... [takes out pencil and paper] ...no. Or maybe..."

"Are you planning on ordering today, sir?"

"I'll have a Krabby Patty." [Squidward writes down order]

"How original."

"And with extra onions."

"Daring today, aren't we?"

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=IXJHMuO7fljLMAlCoLQLNHj5azXET0qRU1%2B%2F4sNzWFU%3D

"One cryin' Johnny comin' up! First bun, then patty, followed by ketchup, mustard, pickles, EXTRA ONIONS, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, and bun, in that order. One cryin' Johnny! Up!"

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=wCe2VZchBwBWg5f2hCNflB7y1RC9GlYDo7xsThheGbM%3D

"It's been a thrill serving you."

"Can I get some extra salt?"

"We're all out."

"Could you check?"

"No."

And not to mention, the best quote of this particular scene...

Favorite Quote:

I love how this is a ridulously long order, with references to In-N-Out, and hilariously random things that I'm not sure what they mean and how they would go into a burger. And Squidward's response is hilarious! XD

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=TBEBIltmxXGXqL2D6wWlb1gG0ZZprkSwzx8bqu3eSqY%3D

"I'll take a Double Triple Balty Deluxe on a raft, four by four, animal-style, extra shingles with a shimmy and a squeeze, light axle grease, make it cry, burn it, and let it swim."

"We serve food here, sir."

So anyway, once Bubble Bass shows up, we see that he apparently must have knew SpongeBob in the past. And when he tries his Krabby Patties, he "claims" that SpongeBob forgot the pickles. And then SpongeBob reputation starts to get ruined... and his memory. Mr. Krabs also losses two whole bucks! Oh no!! He will go bankrupt!!! But yeah, this scene with Mr. Krabs was actually really funny (eg: "How's about a free glass of water? A dozen free glasses of water! I'll even put ice in it! No! Come back! Two dollars! Two dollars, no! No!"), with the really tiny "money-back guarantee," and especially since it's one of the only times that Mr. Krabs was cheap in this episode. (The other time was when he says "All we need to do is get your confidence back. So, you can make me more money! I-I-I mean, patties.") So anyway, SpongeBob tries to make Krabby Patties (like this appetizing one that consists of "Bun down, shoe, mustard, pan, bun") , but this whole "pickles" dilemma caused him to literally go looney and forget how to make Krabby Patties. Mr. Krabs advises SpongeBob to take the day off, instead of yelling at him or firing him like a flandizered Mr. Krabs would do. And he puts the amazing chef Squidward on kitchen duty instead! Wonderful!
Oh yeah, and this scene is also hilarious!

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=%2BqWtZ2f7vvOQ9IzNoYQvqL8LnysBwpH%2FVMPvi%2B2zpYc%3D

"The door! The door! Mr. Krabs, the front door is missing!!"

So SpongeBob goes back home, and not only has forgotten how to make Krabby Patties, he forgot how to do ANYTHING! He even forgets how to sleep on his bed:

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=HxmhQyPmSlVJU%2BAvgUtSpxYRX%2F2gK1pgI1eOr5YdDUY%3D

"Oh...was it mattress, mattress, sheets, pillow, then SpongeBob? Or... D'oh...think, Sponge! Oh yeah! It was mattress, SpongeBob, mattress, then sheets, pillow. Aw, this isn't right. Wait, this isn't right either. Nope. Nuh-uh. Negative. C'mon, c'mon! Get it right. Wrong. Wrong! Wrong! Nope! Naw! Negatory! Nyet! Aww, I almost had it!"

At the next day, we see that Squidward is ...great... at making Krabby Patties. :P

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=tGcuLwSVDa9O0llszATCPnnRUlD6d3O5V1LjR6PUYDU%3D

"Hey, he burnt my Krabby Patty."

"He burnt my fries."

"He burnt my shake."

So Mr. Krabs realized that he needs SpongeBob back. He takes a visit to his house, and as we can see, SpongeBob has completely gone INSANE!!! (And the background music is reversed!)

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=dx0t3tOO2YlWbfD8GCGIKlaf9tB%2FibIypNFWoMgH058%3D

And he talks weird...

"Mr. Krabs, hello. Do you how do?"

"I anything can't do right since because pickles."

"I think don't ready back to go to work, Mr. Krabs."

"I how do that?"

So Mr. Krabs tries to help SpongeBob regain his confidence back and get his life back in order by making a Krabby Patty. And then he get this hilarious scene, which reminds me...

Favorite Moment:

This part when the day turns to night and night turns to day repeatedly, with that dramatic music, and SpongeBob "trying" to figure it out while Mr. Krabs is bored waiting is just hilarious!

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=djsCxOTmudmo0yjD%2BfSINm1kRwV8fcrJAf4M5gqIlqE%3D

Especially when this happens... "[SpongeBob reaches for a bun and Mr. Krabs gets excited. SpongeBob puts bun back down] No, no, no, no, no."

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=vvXkjV2jQIFk74BU1puyBe%2FRrHnappIi71pdZcM7%2F4E%3D

So then, SpongeBob finally gets it!!!

"I got it! I got it! It's all very clear to me now, Mr.. Krabs!"

"It is?"

"Yes! I finally realize that I can't do it! I can't do it, Mr. Krabs! I'm a failure!"

"Don't talk like that!"

"Don't you get it, you crustaceous cheapskate! I can't make a Double Krabby Patty with the works! I can't put a patty on a bun, with lettuce, cheese, onions, tomatoes, ketchup, mustard, pickles, and top bun together in that order!"

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=AH45rl4ofH8qvcIUoh2U5nNLOTDI1RtC9nI%2Bh9V5eCk%3D

So he finally comes back to the Krusty Krab, and we get this really cool climax scene that honestly looks like something that would be in a 22-minute special. SpongeBob comes back to the Krusty Krab and "faces off" Bubble Bass in a chance to regain his reputation and confidence.

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=2G0Z8IVayBaVEuqDm9eOBpiwRi5BX3L0bDBraEMaRcw%3D

(And Squidward sort of breaks the fourth wall since he is "embarrassed" when the camera points at him, while he is "admiring" himself.)

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=4Pw3bXYezqzbXtJtDVx2ox1sAGx0QgXiXu41s%2BBXTco%3D

But... he apparently forgot the pickles again!!! "You failed again, SpongeBob LoserPants!" (By the way, Bubble Bass laughs weird.)

However, SpongeBob realizes something! "Wait a minute! Look! He's been hiding the pickles under his tongue the whole time!" Wow, SpongeBob is shown to be actually intelligent, since he was able to figure that out, whereas no one else did. But anyway, it turns out that Bubble Bass was being a jerk and a BIG PHONY all this time and pretended that SpongeBob forgot the pickles. Well, that sort of doesn't make any sense since he could've just swallowed the pickles, and it also doesn't make any sense that he still has the pickles from last time underneath his tongue... And some lady's car keys. But I can forgive this, because what can I say... Bubble Bass is an IDIOT! Also, I kind of wish that he got his comeuppance since he caused all of this to happen to poor SpongeBob and the Krusty Krab, but it's safe to say that he's probably now one of the most hated creatures in Bikini Bottom because of this. (And he did get trapped in a burning building in "Plankton's Good Eye." Maybe that was arson. Just kidding.)

So anyway, everything is back to normal!

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=h1hV%2FOlu%2FEXvyYNtC%2BGycBBVf2AzY8lY8IS9tpQWuJE%3D

"Hip Hip Horray!"

Don't forget about Squidward!

http://www.sbmania.net/pictures.php?img=28ErRDHfSoE1GwWkL68fin6%2F1myAc4Km%2Bq4UqXGu2Fk%3D

"Hip Hip Boo!" (Poor Squidward...)

Overall, I gotta say that this episode is really underrated. Sometimes even I forget how good it is. This episode is downright hilarious, had a pretty interesting plot, the climax was cool, and it was really cool to see all those ridiculous things happening once SpongeBob lost his memory confidence. :) Also, Mr. Krabs was in character by being a fatherly figure, while still being his cheap self. SpongeBob was also in character, since he was his everyman self, while being silly in a way that's not really his fault and not annoying. So there you have it, you've got an episode that has a good plot and good humor, and is what I think one of the most overlooked episodes in this season.

No doubt about Pickles being one of those great Season 1 episodes. This was an episode that always resonated with me as a kid and stood out a lot and really put SpongeBob's fry cook skills to the test.
