Do any of us really pay attention to the SFX in our favorite cartoons? The weird, wacky, funny, sometimes creepy zips, zaps, bangs, bings, boings, sproings, plops, whomps, skids, head conks, poofs, pings, dings, clangs or bangs which we all hear probably at least once a day on the telly, the 'net, or elsewhere in our favorite movies, programs, or games? A lot of us, when we talk about our favorite porous freak, we talk about the funny jokes, the hilarious facial expressions, and the catchy and infectious music from APM and from the show's in-house music team. Sure, VA's like Tom, Bill, Clancy, Carolyn, Roger, Doug, Dee, Ernie, Tim and the rest all get praised for lending their voices to our favorite undersea ensemble, and the staff composers like Sage Guyton, Nick Carr, Jeremy Wakefield and Michael Bolger (not to mention the numerous composers whose stock cues get used on the show, like Gerhard and Gregor Narholz, Gerhard Trede, Kapono Beamer, Laurie Johnson, etc.) get the thumbs up from time to time for giving us all of those wonderful, creative, and catchy melodies we hear in every episode. But what about Jeff Hutchens, SFX designer and editor extraordinary, the man responsible for cobbling together those weird and wonderful sounds we hear in every episode? To me, Jeff is a wizard with editing SFX just as Nick Carr is with editing music. The horn squawks and duck quacks used whenever a character realizes something; among other uses, the fact each main character has their own distinctive walking SFX (the squeaky shoes for SpongeBob, the "wet spit" sounds for Squidward, etc.), the dolphin chirps, foghorns and horn yells used for swearing in "Sailor Mouth" (much more creative IMO than the "bleep")... yep, Jeff is pretty creative with SFX. A true genius, often contributing to my enjoying the show with his crazy and kooky sounds.

Below this text are links with audio samples of various SFX used by Jeff on the show. They should be instantly recognizable to your ears.

This was used for Squidward's bike in "Squidville".

This can be heard in "Fear of a Krabby Patty".
