According to an article from Deadline Paramount has decided to withdraw Sponge on the Run from the Oscars

Why would they do this?!?

Have they realized this movie doesn't stand a chance against the other heavy-hitters in that category?

Or is there some controversy behind-the-scenes?

If you want an actual answer: While the film would maybe have been ruled eligible with qualification, Paramount realized they were not releasing the film before the oscars eligibility due date so they pulled it from the nomination pool I guess. It is the only time in the category's history where a film has been removed by the distributor, other times it mainly happens where the Academy disqualifies it. No real drama there but it essentially was not going to qualify seemingly, so they took the film out before it was going to get disqualified. The only valid explanation I could think of. It was never going to get nominated anyway so the effect ended up being minimal.
