SpongeBob and Ren and Stimpy are not inspired by each other, this is a lie. Vincent Waller just wants to make it that. SpongeBob was inspired by Rocko’s Modern Life and was its own oddball cartoon. Squidward is not ren.

Don’t quote me on this, but I was sure I had heard that Hillenburg was a fan of R&S (he even doodled them at one point), so I’m sure even in the early days there was at least some influence, but I definitely agree it was going in a really different direction from R&S. I also think that even when the R&S influence peaked around S11 and 12, it was still a much brighter, sweeter, and less unhinged show than R&S was (at least during the Spumco years).
