Regarding the end of The Spongebob Movie (2004)

I've noticed a lot of people talking about how much the ending of the first movie bothered them, because Spongebob is doing a lot of grunt work around the restaurant, and doing a lot of things that most people wouldn't want to do.

I consider this movie to have an INCREDIBLY happy ending! For a few reasons.

First of all, the very last line of the movie is "This is the greatest day of my life!" And look at the giant, ecstatic grin on his face!

The aftermath of the film is Spongebob in his new manager's position, taking care of his new restaurant faithfully, clearly overjoyed about everything in his life. He has an extremely strong work ethic. He takes real pride in his work.

"Squidward, you've got it all wrong. Having pride in your work is nothing to be ashamed of- why, it's the only thing that makes it all worthwhile!"

Mister Krabs still rules over him, but he doesn't care. He still has enough money to live a comfortable life. And he's not in it for the money anyway- he likes to make other people happy. "What could be better than serving up smiles?"

He also has a bigger hat, something he's been strongly implied to have wanted for a REALLY long time, if his daydreams are any indication.

He's probably been dreaming of this day ever since he was a young, weirdly-shaped sponge from 1998.

The moral of this is that he worked his butt off, and now his dreams have come true due to his determination and work ethic. He has his dream job, and his dream hat, and he approaches his life with unrestrained optimism, no matter how much gum he has to scrape off the undersides of the tables.

I consider that to be a very adult, mature message, and a really happy ending to his story.

While SpongeBob isn't exactly the perfect rolemodel, there are some features about him which could really make people a better person.

Exactly. He's hardworking, kind, cheerful, and dares to follow his dreams. Good for him!

I hate it when people say that SpongeBob aspiring to nothing more than flipping burgers is a bad message. I think his attitude toward his job is a great message. He's never going to get what most people would consider to be a highly respectable, well-paid career, because realistically he lacks the skills and the capacity to learn them, but that doesn't matter. He knows what his strengths are, works a job that he's talented at, throws himself into it, and most importantly he does something that he loves. He's so grateful and happy to do this job that other people consider menial.

I disagree with that. Spongebob (the character) is incredibly intelligent, and when he actually takes things seriously and applies himself, he's capable of a lot. He COULD have a respectable, high-paying career.

The thing is, he chooses not to. He likes.... no, LOVES being a fry cook. The smiles on customer's faces, and the quality of his own work, are the reason he gets out of bed in the morning. He enjoys the simple things in life, like taking out the trash and making squeaky noises with the pickle slices.

Seriously? How hard it is to read his characterization? In those scenes where he did physical works you can clearly see that he's smiling!! Dammit people, how do you survive social interactions if you can't read other people's emotion from the facial expression?

Also what's the problem with burger flipping? He loves every second of it. Dream job doesn't always means doctors or engineers. It's the jobs that makes you happy! Is it that hard to understand happiness?

Exactly! He clearly loves his job and everything about his life.

As for your second paragraph, absolutely. "Dream job" doesn't always mean "rich." Some people want to be musicians or artists, even though it's EXTREMELY difficult to make a living doing that. Some artists live in really small apartments and don't get paid too much, but they do what they love, because that's what they really want to do as a career. Some people are just that determined and driven.

Good for Sponge for following his dreams. He's probably had a lot of people laugh at him for what he considers a dream job.

SpongeBob really truly is one of the best role-models on kids tv these days. Destroy the idea that he ruins kids.

Totally. He's a pretty great role model for kids AND adults.

I cried 3 times during the movie, whether it was tears of joy or sadness. This was tears of joy.
The "you didn't get the job" scene near the beginning hit me really REALLY hard when I watched it recently. As an adult, those kinds of things are just really poignant. Because I applied for a job I really wanted it, and I didn't get the job because I was told I wasn't quite ready for it. It broke my heart to see Spongebob going through the same thing.

I don't understand why ANYONE would think SpongeBob is a bad role model... he's the best model I can think of in children's television. He's dedicated to his work, he sticks by his friends, no matter what the situation, he's (almost) always positive, and while sometimes, Squidward, as well as others, may be annoyed by him, it's never intentional. I don't think he realizes that he annoys people (there are probably a few exceptions when he does realize). He's just an all around good guy/sponge. I really can't think of a better role model for kids.

Really?! People hate the freaking ending?! Well, what ending would you guys like?! Would you like an ending where Mr. Krabs fired SpongeBob?! SpongeBob is an excellent role model and there are most idiots out there today who will never understand that this makes him happy.

Sorry, but I had to say it.

Spongebob is a flawed and imperfect but still respectable person. He can't read social cues to save his life and he has an inferiority/superiority complex that he doesn't always keep in check, but he's an AWESOME role model. If more people were as friendly and hard-working as him, the world would be a better place.

People disliked the ending, apparently, because Spongebob has a "crappy" job that requires him to clean and do work.

It's a sad ending because the series got much worse after this.
