Phil Collins

Cha

I love SBM
aka my favorite singer ever besides Ariana Grande and Tōru Hidaka (Beat Crusaders).

Discuss this beautiful man here and also Genesis.

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since I listened to their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listening to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford, you can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism.

Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. Also, Sussudio is a great, great song, a personal favorite.

This guy sang the songs in Tarzan and Brother Bear, and he did an AMAZING job in both films.

So I'm personally happy that after disappearing for five years, Phil has come back and seems if not happier than ever then at least no longer talking about how he would "kill the whole Phil Collins thing off".

I think I first heard Invisible Touch (the song) around 2012? I thought it was amazing and couldn't stop listening to it. Then I got into the solo stuff and it was just as good. Like I'm not trying to say it's the greatest music ever made but it's just so catchy and fun (well, not the early albums when he's angry about his divorce but still).

Favourite songs from each album:

Face Value - 'I'm Not Moving'
Hello, I Must Be Going! - 'Like China'
No Jacket Required - 'Long Long Way to Go'
…But Seriously - 'I Wish It Would Rain Down'
Both Sides - 'Everyday'
Dance into the Light - 'Dance into the Light' (I also sort of like 'The Same Moon' but this album is kinda bleh)
Testify - …yeah I don't really like this album, sorry Phil

If all else fails just listen to Sussudio

Gotta love Phil Collins and Genesis. From his solo stuff, I love not just In The Air Tonight, but also You Can't Hurry Love (mildly better than the Supremes version), Sussudio and Against All Odds.

From Genesis, there's Invisible Touch of course, but also That's All, Follow You Follow Me and Turn It On Again.

I feel his lesser known songs, in both Genesis and his solo career are his better ones, they're classics in my book.

I'd like everyone's replies in here if it didn't look spammy. <3

While Collins's solo work was more smooth rock than his pop rock Genesis, I enjoy both aspects of his career. Though wasn't a fan of smooth music/jazzish stuff, it appeals to me more as I'm an adult. Glad I got into him 2 years ago and not too earlier.

My favorite Genesis songs:
No Son of Mine
Jesus He Knows Me
Hold On My Heart
Follow You Follow Me
Land of Confusion
No Reply At All

Misunderstanding

I Can't Dance

My favorite Phil Collins songs:
You Can't Hurry Love

I don't like Phil Collins
This is fine because for a long time it seemed as though those of us who did like him were in such a minority. Those who grew up in the 80s seem to have a particular dislike for him because he was so prevalent in the media at the time.

It seems to have become more acceptable in the last couple of years to say you're a Phil Collins fan. And the reviews of the reissues of old albums have been very glowing… it's all a far cry from 5 years ago when he was talking about how he would kill himself off and get rid of that "Phil Collins" character.

ANYWAY the intro to Only You Know and I Know is amazing.

I give you that he's talented but someone put it best when they described him as "the Tomas Kinkade of adult contemporary."
