You know what? I'm going to think outside of the box, and say that the real best episode is "Bubblestand."

The entire episode takes place in one spot- Spongebob's front yard. There are only three characters. The entire plot revolves around blowing bubbles.

Despite these simple-sounding aspects, the writers were able to make it immensely creative and funny. It perfectly personifies the show in general, and Spongebob as a person- imaginative, generous, artistic, and funny.

The writers and storyboard artists were able to take "Spongebob blows bubbles" and make it into something incredibly memorable.

This is why "Bubblestand" is the best episode.

I'm not even joking. I'm being 100% serious.

I guess it’s the best in taking something simple and making it big.

yes I copied and pasted, who cares

I like the paper for the same reasons but I think idiot box is the funniest ep that involved that sort of thing.
"Bubblestand," "The Paper," and "Idiot Box" is like the ultimate Spongebob trilogy. Maybe "Artist Unknown" should go in there somewhere...

All of those involve Spongebob taking something mundane and making something beautiful out of them. A true testament to the power of creativity.

I sound like a pretentious d1ckface, don't I?

That's season 1 in a nutshell.

I feel like people don't appreciate season 1 enough.
In the words of PieGuyRulz, "Season 1 has a bit less laughs but a bit more charm than other seasons."
Not as funny, but better at building atmosphere through quiet moments.

Simplistic doesn't necessarily mean good. Although bubblestand was good, one of season's 1's best, there are far better episodes from season 2 and 3. Great simplistic episodes include survival of the idiots, idiot box, club spongebob, the camping episode, wet painters and graveyard shift.

Good points. "Wet Painters" was fantastic. Not exactly a quiet, atmospheric episode, but every joke was hysterical.
Graveyard Shift is one of my favorite episodes. The entire scene of Squidward telling Spongebob the scary story is so perfect. Here's a video of the actors making "Graveyard Shift:"

There is no "real" best episode, there are only opinions. The only possible objective basis for something being the best is popularity and if you're going by that, Band Geeks is without a doubt the most fan favorite. Neither of them are my favorite, though and there is no "real" best.

Nah. I sometimes read stuff I write and go what was I thinking when I worded this but you've said this really well.

I wonder what your favorite is...

I feel like the big 5, based on what Spongebob fans in general like (and quote constantly) , are:

1) Band Geeks
2) Krusty Krab Training Video
3) Chocolate with Nuts
4) Pizza Delivery
5) The Camping Episode

Only one of those is in my top 5 personal favorites.

I wouldn't say it's the best episode of Season 1, never mind overall, but Bubblestand is art. It is so pure and innocent in tone and everything about it radiates a simple, childlike joy. The pace is so slow and the plot so simplistic and inoffensive that it's almost like watching an episode of a preschool show. And it's really nice. As much as I like episodes that are dark (Nasty Patty) or frenetic (Wet Painters) there's something really special about Bubblestand's serene atmosphere.

Watching the show as an adult, I appreciate different things than I did as a kid. I appreciate quiet moments, the building of atmosphere, dramatic tension, slow pacing, and genuine character interaction. Not that I dislike the rapid-fire comedy of later episodes, but... the earlier ones were so simple and special in their own right.

When I was a kid my favorite episode was probably Band Geeks or Walking Small, but now I like the quieter episodes where the characters can just sort of be themselves, like Bubblestand and Pizza Delivery.

I don't know why I feel this way.
