So in a scene that's confused the hell out of shippers for years, Spongebob kisses Squidward on the nose, then smiles at him adoringly.

Here's my theory- it wasn't a romantic gesture in the slightest. It was a maternal one. Think about it- where have we seen this sort of thing before?

The only infamous kissing scene was from Sonic 06, this just flat out depends on the culture and how much you overreact on the common sense media reviews. :P

Family members kiss each other all the time.
I know. And these characters are like family to each other. Lest we remember...

Same here, Spongebob is just trying to take care of Squidward as if he's his child and the kiss signifies that.

At first I thought this was going to be referring to the kiss in "Dear Vikings", which I also believe means nothing romantic. But yeah, here it's just SpongeBob being maternal to Squidward

Just look at Squidward's face AFTER the kiss.

It surely wasn't a romantic kiss. It was a kiss that made him think about everything...

SpongeBob is a very affectionate person, why does being affectionate or showing feelings automatically make anyone especially a male gay?

How about this: Sponges have a different culture than other creatures. In their culture kisses have less to no romantic connotation.

Random somewhat related fact: Communist leaders used to kisses each other as a sign of friendship.
That makes sense actually. It would explain why Grandma Squarepants kissed Patrick when she'd only just met him.

I've been told that Squidward's expression is one of pure, concentrated guilt

Apparently nobody has heard of friendly kisses.
In America, kissing is an intimate gesture usually reserved for close family or romantic partners, whereas in Europe it's more of a friendly, casual thing. Maybe Spongebob's culture is slightly different than Squidward's. Maybe sponge culture in general is more demonstrative and affectionate.

So Spongebob sees Squidward like a cat? lol

and btw, I'm sorry about your cat passing away... :(
