How about this: Sponges have a different culture than other creatures. In their culture kisses have less to no romantic connotation.
Random somewhat related fact:
Communist leaders used to kisses each other as a sign of friendship.
That makes sense actually. It would explain why Grandma Squarepants kissed Patrick when she'd only just met him.

SpongeBob is a very affectionate person, why does being affectionate or showing feelings automatically make anyone especially a male gay?

WHERE THE heck IS THAT BOTTOM IMAGE FROM AND WHAT IS THE CONTEXT???

Just look at Squidward's face AFTER the kiss.
It surely wasn't a romantic kiss. It was a kiss that made him think about everything...
ouch lol it has nothing to do with this
I've been told that Squidward's expression is one of pure, concentrated guilt

Apparently nobody has heard of friendly kisses.
In America, kissing is an intimate gesture usually reserved for close family or romantic partners, whereas in Europe it's more of a friendly, casual thing. Maybe Spongebob's culture is slightly different than Squidward's. Maybe sponge culture in general is more demonstrative and affectionate.

I kissed my cat's head when he was still alive.
So Spongebob sees Squidward like a cat? lol
