How can Nickelodeon find their "next big thing"?

As much as it hurts to say this, SpongeBob SquarePants cannot last forever

When it eventually ends, Nick needs some new juggernaut cartoons to take his place

How can they get another "SpongeBob"?

They just have to be lucky and stumble onto the right show, kinda like winning the lottery

What do you guys think?

What I'm afraid could happen is sometime in the future people will tire of SpongeBob's formula (both figuratively and literally) like with Phineas and Ferb

P and F proved that formulaic cartoons aren't invincible and can easily be brought down

I fear the same will happen to SpongeBob SquarePants...

The same way they got SpongeBob to overthrow Rugrats: sheer luck

I agree with Vuvuzela Smasher—probably just luck. There isn't really a "formula" to finding the next hit cartoon. Every really popular cartoon is different (let's remember that ATLA and SpongeBob are on the same network). Nick's best bet is to not pull a Harvey Beaks and to adequately promote all their new cartoons, as well as give creators a good amount of freedom.

The answer is that there is no certain answer. No one knows what works and what doesn't without an incredible amount of trial and error.
