Gay/Use of the word gay

Let me clear something up...

You might see me using the word "gay" on here every now and then but not a whole lot. I'm not against gays nor do I have any problem with them. They are who they are.

When I say 'gay' it usually means that it's stupid or ridiculous. For example, "That tv show is so gay." So basically, what I just said was "That tv show is so stupid." I substituted the word stupid for gay. I do in real life and I do it on here.

I've used the word on sbc before and got a warning. Have not been back since. I was not banned. I chose not to go back because you can use all sorts of curse words on there but for some gay reason you can't use the word 'gay' because it offends some people. So basically even though some of the curse words may offend some people, you can still use them. They really didn't understand my reasoning behind the use of 'gay' when I used it on sbc but whatever. I'm done with that discussion board and if you want to talk to me about sbc, please do so in a PM. We're not going to get into it in this topic.

What you can talk about in this topic, though, is the use of the word 'gay' or how I use it or whatever floats your boat.

Pretty much, it's a offensive.
How about substitute to ''stupid'' or say it in real-format. =]
Because, in some cases people will think you really mean that. And, I think of it as kind of a curse word. Also, I hate when people say it. And, I not against you at all. :cody:

This is a new generation. Practically everyone these days (pre-teens-teens at least) say the word gay as in "stupid".
 
For your information, using that term doesn't mean stupid.
So, I don't care... say it all you want.
The term ''gay" means someone who mates with there same gender.
So, pretty much it's offensive.
It's offensive. So, ssj say ''gay" all you want.
But, you know one day you will see that it will offend someone.
I can't believe this.

pretty much means pretty in a much way. So whose to say pretty can't have alternative meanings.

Edit: Even better, hot means very warm. When we call a girl "hot", we could be sending a bad message that she's heating up.

In this use, the word does not mean "homosexual", so it can be used, for example, to refer to an inanimate object or abstract concept of which one disapproves.

I'll be honest, when I was younger, I thought gay meant lame or stupid before I found out what it actually meant. And I still use it sometimes now, but I don't have any gay friends or family and am not gay myself so I wouldn't know if it offended them. I have no problem with ssj using it the way he did BUT I obviously don't have anything against gays either. It's just the way the word is sometimes used and it is how I used to use it. I probably wont ever use it on purpose nowadays though, not because I think it's soooooo wrong but because I've matured.

We should also remember that there is a stereotype for gays and not all gays are like that, just watch Happy Endings. Although Modern Family is one of my favourite shows Cam and Mitchell are a bit stereotypical.
 
I really don't understand how the word gay even came to mean homosexual. For centuries it has always meant carefree, pretty, or even immortality. But
all I can say is that words develop different meanings over time, therefore it's better to understand the context with which the word was used than to dread on the actual word itself. That being said, I couldn't care less if someone gets offended by a word if they understood the context had nothing to do with them, and in some cases I would even considered them selfish if they did.

It's always had both meanings, it just hasn't been until recently that the it's become more common

Used to? Then I guess hot used to mean very warm?
 
I don't think using "gay" synonymously for "stupid" is offensive, but when you're insulting someone with the intent of calling them a homosexual, that's where I believe it crosses the line. There's nothing wrong with being homosexual, or being of the LGBT orient.
