It has been presumed for years that SpongeBob was meant to end with Season 3, after 60 episodes and a theatrical movie. Whether this is true or not, The Sponge Who Could Fly has hints of the writers writing it with the intention of it being a series finale, such as it being a half-hour special, the Remembering SpongeBob montage, and the narrator saying at the end that SpongeBob will always be in our hearts and minds, with a SpongeBob constellation appearing in the night sky.
With this in mind, do you think if the series ended with The Sponge Who Could Fly, it would be seen as a satisfying end to SpongeBob SquarePants?
I think it would be a horrible finale. Because…
1. There’s no satisfying conclusion. SpongeBob’s goal in this episode is to fly with the jellyfish. This makes no sense. Not only is it something SpongeBob has rarely expressed, but the one time he did desire a similar thing, in Nature Pants, he had learned his lesson. It would’ve made more sense for SpongeBob’s goal to be becoming the greatest fry cook or something like that.
2. The special is surprisingly mean. SpongeBob takes a lot of abuse here.
3. The final line of the episode is literally the French Narrator telling us to get lost.
In general, I feel that if SpongeBob ended after 3 seasons, Season 3 would be seen as lower quality compared to Season 2.
But I want to hear everyone else’s opinions. Does The Sponge Who Could Fly make for a good ending to the SpongeBob SquarePants series? (You can pretend the movie either does or doesn’t exist in this scenario.)
