This was probably the video that @LinesEM was talking about. Good analysis BUT they're wrong about season 1 of JT being cel animated, as usual. Season 1 of Johnny Test was done digitally, just frame by frame.

If by cel animated he means just hand drawn on paper then scanned and colored digitally then yea

I wonder why some early season 3 episodes (that have season 2 production codes), still have season 3 style coloring. I think it’s because the episodes were storyboarded for season 2, but came back from Korea later than the season 2 episodes did.

The show's animation and coloring hasn't changed much in the past nine seasons or so.

Compare the two screenshots to Sailor Mouth, and it looks much older than both of these screenshots:

Despite the fact that Sailor Mouth and Funny Pants are only 4 years apart, but A Place for Pets and Funny Pants are 15 years apart, despite the fact that Funny Pants looks a lot more like A Place for Pets.

Funny Pants is the first episode to have the modern Spongebob color pallet. Season 2 and 3 were probably animated at a lower resolution, which is why the lines are wobbly. Sailor Mouth looks retro, Funny Pants still looks brand new.

The lines are very thick in Your Shoe's Untied, especially SpongeBob's eyes.

The character designs and facial expressions of SpongeBob and Squidward are very season 4.

I think this shot is the easiest way to tell this is an older episode. We never get these kind of cute facial expressions anymore:

Spongebob has his Nasty Patty design in "The Lost Matress."

The night time scene in the end of the episode looks like season 3:

The only difference between this and an actual season 3 episode, is that this has better coloring and line quality. This episode was probably animated earlier than the rest of the season.
