Are "ship teases" beneficial or detrimental to the show?

SpongeBob likes to tease character shippings a lot

Is this a good thing to do or does this damage the show's reputation?

What I'm asking is:

Should the writers stop teasing potential love interests?

SpongeBob SquarePants is NOT a soap opera

The ONLY time this should be done is when the series eventually ends someday in order to provide closure IMHO
