Does SpongeBob Make You Stupid?
Thursday, February 07, 2013
Reyna Segura & Ana Salgado
According to a 2011 study done by the psychology department of the University of Virginia,SpongeBob

SquarePants tends to make people stupid. Most people spend about 1 to 3 hours a day watching TV. Some

cartoons people still watch are Family Guy, South Park, The Simpsons, and some shows on PBS kids. Some

even admitted to still watching SpongeBob SquarePants. "Girl, I love (SpongeBob); that's my man!" junior

Delilah Nunez said. Others don't find SpongeBob entertaining. "He's too immature," junior Miguel Rueda said.

Out of 100 students randomly surveyed, 20% said that those who watch SpongeBob are dumber than those

who don't. The other 80% disagrees. "There is a goal in every episode, but the process is too distracting,"

senior Christopher Valadez said. Christopher also thinks SpongeBob is a bad influence. "He doesn't set a good

example on how kids should do things," he said. In one episode, SpongeBob was supposed to write a paper

for his Driver's Ed class, but instead he got distracted too many times. He never wrote the paper and put it

off until the next day, five minutes before class. Our own principal thinks the other characters

are more of a bad influence than SpongeBob himself. "Mr. Krabs is only interested in money. And Squidward,

he's annoying. He probably suffers from a compulsive disorder," Principal Frank Zarate said. But the

characters are not the only part of the show that makes people stupid. "The way the characters execute the

plot might be another reason," Christopher said. In the candy bar episode, the goal is to fundraise. But kids

lose perspective with the funny and distracting scenes. So, rather than learning a lesson, they laugh and

forget the importance of the episode. Students recommend watching other shows instead of SpongeBob.

"Watch Laura or Don Francisco," senior David Mendoza said. Mr. Zarate strongly disagrees with the University

of Virginia's study. "I don't believe in that study. I would like to know who conducted it. I find this show very

appealing," he said. But, what do you think, Morton East?

This article particularly annoys me, especially when it states "some even admitted to still watching SpongeBob SquarePants", as if there is something wrong with watching it at an older age!

They also say that in "Chocolate With Nuts", that children are too distracted by the jokes to notice the episode's "goal" of fundraising. (if it weren't for the jokes, the episode wouldn't be as entertaining, and it's not supposed to even teach a goal, is mostly just there to entertain)

It's just a high school newspaper, so I wouldn't get upset about it. It's not a serious article, more like somebody's English assignment. ;)

PS: Mr. Zarate knows what's up.

So the guy that is always happy all the time, the guy that works hard for others' satisfaction, the guy who study as hard as he can to get a license, the guy who never gave up on his friends, the guy who did nice things to the neighbor that hates him is A BAD INFLUENCE? Does these people's incompetence knows no bounds?

Every episode has a main goal but the execution is too distracting? What are we? Dora?! If it weren't for the jokes the show wouldn't be as entertaining.

And what in God's name is "Laura" or "Don Francisco"?

And why are we always getting the death pie? As if other cartoons don't make us stupid. Oh, and one more thing . . .

Look, Frank, I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for trouble, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my favourite cartoon character go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.

death pie should be given to DORA! yeesh you dont stop a fox by saying something three times!

I don't think the person who claimed Spongebob was a bad influence knows what he's talking about. "Procrastination" was telling kids NOT to procrastinate. It wasn't glorifying it. I don't think we were watching the same series. Also, the "humor gets in the way of the moral", of course. Spongebob was made to ENTERTAIN FIRST, not to educate. It may have some educating plots, but like almost all great shows, it is made with the idea to entertain first. I don't think people realise this show isn't aimed at the Dora crowd. I am also unaware of what "Laura" and "Don Francisco" are. I also don't get how Mr. Zarate said he found the show very appealing just after heavily criticizing the show.

Apparently, SpongeBob has been inspired by Dora to have a goal in every episode, without the entertainment. Alrighty, don't make a rant article about SpongeBob if you don't know that it's not a pre-school show. @_@

Some preschool shows do. I mean, I'll admit I liked a couple back in the day. Early Dora wasn't too bad but when it came out I was starting to grow out of that stuff, I liked Kipper, Maggie and the Ferocious Beast, Arthur, Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. But I did not like Calliou. I thought he was a brat. Anyhow, I also watched a lot of kids cartoons. Spongebob was one of my favorites growing up. I really liked Dexter's Lab, Ed, Edd, n' Eddy, Rocket Power, Pokemon, Hey Arnold, Rugrats, et cetera. So, I can't speak for other kids, but I watched a number of shows growing up that weren't in my target demographic and some that were. I turned out fine. In fact, not to pat myself on the back, but I think I am pretty smart. So, to say Spongebob makes kids dumb is taking kids too lightly, and I believe other people think that kids get influenced by everything they see, which is beyond far fetched.
