291b. The Goobfather

This one was fine. I think some parts were a bit dumb (the guys destroying all the ice cream stuff in the Krusty Krab wasn't funny) and the ending went on longer than it needed to (I swear can we have a single S13 episode where the ending is paced properly???) but the fight scene was enough to make the episode at least somewhat enjoyable. It's not funny and it's not super great story-wise, but as an episode it's solid enough.

6/10

I liked this episode. As others said, the comedy is not one of the strongest of the season, but I liked the fact that at least it had a conflict in it, and that it actually started fairly early. The pacing seemed mostly fine to me maybe except for near the ending. I found the very ending with the ice cream king dropping the bomb kinda stupid. Still, it's a good episode in my opinion.

With a title like “The Goobfather”, I can’t say I’m not interested in what this episode has to offer. I’m ready for a mafia-style family being the one who runs Goofy Goobers. That means that this episode better not take itself seriously whatsoever.

The episode beginning at the Krusty Krab surprises me, especially as the plot starts with SpongeBob accidentally giving Bubble Bass a new kind of food—a Krabby Patty and Kelp Shake mixed together. I’m surprised because, well, the title of the episode implies that Goofy Goobers will be involved here. So I’m wondering how they’re going to come in. But I suppose I just need to trust the process.

I gotta say, I never tire of being right. Seems like I’m right about us getting a mafia-style type set-up with Goofy Goobers here. It’s so inherently absurd and I love that. I also love that the manager of Goofy Goobers that we’ve seen before is the “Goobfather”, who controls all the ice cream trade in town. I like that this episode reused a character we’ve started to become more familiar with, I think it works well. I’m a little confused about why this new Patty Whip is a problem for the Goobfather considering the Krusty Krab already had Kelp Shakes (and milkshakes, if “License to Milkshake” is any indication), but oh well. I’m going to assume that Patrick’s appearance here is a reference to The Godfather (never seen the movie so I wouldn’t know), because otherwise it’s very random. And of course The Goobfather’s lackeys have to rough up the Krusty Krab to make a point.

Mr. Krabs ain’t going down without a fight though, which is exactly what I’d expect from him. I want to see Mr. Krabs go to war with the mafia, because it’s funny. You know, and this is going to be a big tangent, but since Clancy Brown was in the newest John Wick movie, I kind of now want to see Mr. Krabs in a John Wick role because I think that would be hilarious. Okay, tangent done, I guess that wasn’t as long as I thought. But it was a very unrelated idea. Anyway, Mr. Krabs somehow thinks that Old Man Jenkins and Old Man Walker are good security, and so his machine is broken again.

I think I really am getting Mr. Krabs going to war with the mafia, because now he’s taking the fight to them by pulling a “Krabs a la Mode”. SpongeBob’s distraction here is so cute. Man, Mr. Krabs fights dirty, I wasn’t expecting the ice cream to start exploding. And of course, this is when the retaliations start to escalate, as in retaliation, the Goobfather literally comes to drive the Gooby Gobbers ship into the Krusty Krab. I guess the Chum Bucket doesn’t exist anymore lol. Surprisingly, Mr. Krabs is prepared for this, having armed the entire Krusty Krab. Considering the amount of times we’ve seen the Krusty Krab go on supreme lockdown, I guess this isn’t actually all that surprising. More surprising is seeing Squidward legitimately desire to defend the Krusty Krab, at least that’s what I see on his face here. I love how unserious this all is, and yet it’s treated with gravitas. It’s camp. It reminds me a lot of “Sand Castles in the Sand”. I love all the quips from everyone involved too.

The fight ends with both restaurants completely destroyed, and Mr. Krabs being ripped LMAO. In the word of my roommate, d*mn. And him and the Goobfather duke it out with popsicle nunchucks and ice cream lightsabers. I love this. And then the Ice Cream King shows up. For once, his appearance actually makes sense. Y’all know I don’t even like him tho. But I do love that this show creates new characters and then reuses them. So I like this on that account. And all the Ice Cream King has to say is basically “make ice cream not war”, and that’s enough for the brawling restaurant owners. But of course the Ice Cream King is even more of an idiot than Patrick, so he sends an ice cream bomb at them, engulfing all of Bikini Bottom in ice cream. Man, these people are so unsanitary, eating ice cream off the ground. Funny that this episode ends on the same line as last episode—”typical”.

I feel like you have been forgetting to add endings to your reviews since I haven't seen the " *episode* was a *insert opinion of episode here*" in a while tbh

Actually, that was a purposeful choice. I just felt like it was unnecessary to do the sum up on these later episodes. It helped save time which I needed since I was really busy during the last few months of these reviews.

That's a good question lol. The original plan was to do the episodes that are out now and review as they come out, then the plan was to wait until they were all done. Now that it's summer and I'll potentially have more free time depending on the job I'll be working, I might go with plan A. So it's kinda just up in the air.
