Now this is an episode I’ve heard quite a bit about, because it caused quite the stir on Twitter when it premiered a few months back. Just the same nonsense about “SpongeBob ruining attention spans” that sounded like it could’ve come straight from 1999. Embarrassing, honestly. It makes me think about how I feel like I’m still waiting for the crazy exaggerated expressions people keep claiming are in these episodes all the time…
This episode is about Patrick learning to ride a bike. Simple plot, meaning that the execution is going to be almost entirely dependent on the humor of the episode. Quite a risky venture. Anyway, I’m already loving how fluid and expressive the animation is in this episode. Definitely a worthy investment for an episode with a simple plot, it gets me interested quickly. The way Patrick moves straight to tears after realizing he can’t ride a bike…this makes me realize that this is an episode that could’ve fit well in the middle seasons. But this tears thing, where in those seasons I tended to not care for the tears, I like it here. Probably because it’s so exaggerated to become a gag.
SpongeBob dedicates himself to teach Patrick how to ride a bike. How car-unfriendly of him. Patrick struggles with just the first lesson of riding a bike—sitting on it. Ah, this reminds me of “Big Pink Loser”. SpongeBob’s expression here is also great. Also the reveal that Patrick has a psychiatrist…there’s a lot I can take from that, but I don’t want to be here all day. SpongeBob then performs brain surgery on Patrick (lol) and manages to get him sitting on the bike.
Now it’s time for the next lesson—pedaling. Oh boy. This part is actually pretty cute. I love how it’s a parody of the normal “kid learning how to ride a bike” scene that we’ve seen over and over and over again, and I like how it makes use of SpongeBob’s whole propensity to detach his arms lol. This ends up freaking Patrick out though…which reminds me of SpongeBob’s inability to drive. There’s a parallel here…I can feel it. SpongeBob discerns that Patrick needs something to help him focus when he rides. So he tries a Krabby Patty, but then Patrick eats it. And then he realizes he’s biking and freaks out hilariously. Yeah, this is definitely a parallel to SpongeBob’s inability to drive.
SpongeBob tries to take Patrick on a tandem bike, which works after some struggling to get them moving. This is actually a pretty smart idea for getting someone like Patrick to learn how to ride a bike, as SpongeBob’s in control of the steering, and Patrick just gets to learn how to petal. Of course, when SpongeBob tries to give Patrick the instructions of pedaling a little faster, Patrick goes into overdrive. Yep, this is like boating school, but it’s Patrick and it’s biking instead. I like it. It’s especially nice when you think of this episode along with “Driven to Tears”. During this scene, it’s also really nice to see Mrs. Puff and Mr. Krabs enjoying a tandem bike ride of their own. I was just thinking about how tandem bikes are such a cute concept lol. And Mr. Krabs’ little eye stalk helmets are adorable. SpongeBob and Patrick of course crash into Mrs. Puff and Mr. Krabs, and then they all end up crashing into Squidward and his reclined bike. Man, Bikini Bottom is such a bike-friendly city! And then they all end up crashing into a parent and kids in Jellyfish Fields. Oh dear. I love the chaos though. I also like that this scene makes clear the association I’ve been making the entire episode. Me and the writers were just psychically linked like that.
SpongeBob comes up with a new idea for teaching Patrick how to ride a bike—get rid of unimportant knowledge in his head. Ooh, that could go very wrong very fast, and SpongeBob would know. SpongeBob decides to get rid of Patrick’s memory of brushing his teeth (should’ve gotten rid of the memory to comb his teeth…that sound was god-awful), watching TV, putting on pants, and his family (love the nod to “The Patrick Star Show” here…I’m also taking this to mean that this episode takes place very early on in the SpongeBob continuity, so every time that Patrick makes a mention of family that contradicts TPSS, it’s because of this. I know the real reason is probably due to the same kind of time travel shenanigans that explain
Kamp Koral, or at least that’s my personal understanding, but still). Anyway, SpongeBob manages to erase basically every memory of Patrick’s other than riding a bike lol. And then we get the one expression/gesture/bit of animation that somehow made everyone on Twitter go insane. I for one love this “ooh I think someone’s finally ready to ride a bicycle!” bit. It’s hilarious.
SpongeBob fills Patrick’s empty brain with knowledge on riding a bicycle. Which ends with a F.U.N. reference that ends up kicking the bike knowledge out of his head. Oh boy. And then Patrick ends up careening down Dead Man’s Hill. And this is hilariously chaotic. And yet somehow Patrick manages to ride down safely, showing his mastery of the bicycle. His little
expression after this is adorable. Patrick then becomes a bike riding hero.
Just kidding! That was all a dream Patrick had after he crashed down Dead Man’s Hill. Love the subversion here. And the cutaway gag is actually amazing, very unlike this show’s style but something I would not mind seeing again (as long as it doesn’t become too regularly used). While SpongeBob is remorseful that he couldn’t teach Patrick how to ride a bike, turns out that’s unnecessary as Patrick has been permanently fused with his bike. Okay, who are the doctors in Bikini Bottom because they suck (or maybe they don’t, because I don’t think any doctor today could fuse someone with their bike). And we end with a gorgeous background
alert (
two, really). It doesn’t get any better than this!
“Ride Patrick Ride” was a really good episode. It felt longer than 11 minutes for whatever reason. But whatever the case, I really, really liked this one. Easily one of my favorites of the season so far. It was just so freaking funny, and it did so many different things, which is exactly what an episode with a simple plot should be doing! No qualms with this episode at all, except for maybe the moment of Patrick combing his tooth. That sound truly was awful.
