Episode: New Fish in Town

This episode was between bad and decent for me. Spongebob and Patrick were a bit annoying, but it didn't bother me that much. Howard was an interesting character, but the ending kinda ruined him. There were few funny jokes. 5.5/10

I liked the first 7 or 8 minutes of this episode...but tell me, Howart HATED jellyfishing , bubbles and stuff..how ALL OF A SUDDEN did he start to like them? that was unfair for Squidward and the ending was BAD...But it didn't ruin the whole episode for me so I am giving it a 7/10

A great idea was wasted on this unfunny and dull episode with a nonsensical ending.

I wasn't thrilled with this one. I like the premise, but the execution was lackluster and this episode was also pretty lacking on the joke department. It's not terrible, but it's not good either.

Whenever I think of "New Fish in Town" now, I think of Rube. I don’t know why Harold reminds me of Rube, he just does. Other than that, the only thing I really remember about this episode (other than the very basics of the plot) is the whole diving gag, which I’ll talk about later. As I type this, though, more and more of the episode is coming back to me. And then of course, I rewatched it after typing all this.

I can’t believe this episode has Patrick become a no-good landlord…for shame. Just kidding. Mostly. But in all seriousness, the plot of this episode is pretty interesting, having Patrick rent out his front yard. It’s pretty unlike any episode we’ve seen thus far, so I’m already intrigued. Honestly, Patrick’s little scheme here is perfect for the tiny house movement…okay, that’s enough little tangents from me, I’ll rein it in.

Howard is quite the interesting character…from his voice, to his 3rd person speech, to his design. I like it! And I like that he ends up being a good match for Squidward, at least on the surface. He even has a bunch of random pictures of himself everywhere (or portraits, probably). A match made in heaven. And then of course, Squidward has to try and hide the hot messes that are SpongeBob and Patrick, because Harold is not at all a fan of pretty much everything about them. Or so he claims.

I really like that this episode gives Squidward someone else to bounce off of. It keeps things interesting in an episode about the goings of Conch Street. Not that a plot like that can ever be boring, because it usually stays quite interesting when the core trio is involved. One thing I don’t like about this plot, though, is that it is one of those plots where one character tries to hide something from another for a whole episode. That’s just not a plot that’s ever really…worked for me. At least for the most part. I don’t know exactly what it is that I don’t like about it. Maybe because it has a foregone conclusion? But that’s not a bad thing on its own. Maybe because these kinds of plots are one of the most likely to give me secondhand embarrassment? I truly do not know. The fact is, I have an aversion. And it’s not going away with this episode, that’s for sure.

Anyway, Squidward then proceeds to go to extreme lengths to ensure Harold doesn’t see SpongeBob and Patrick, ranging from distraction, to fence-building, to wall building, to literally sewing SpongeBob and Patrick’s mouths shut. Eventually, he just pushes their houses off a cliff, which is where that funny diving gag originates. I don’t know who thought of this, but whoever did, I want you to get a raise pronto. It’s such a small thing, yet so funny to me.

Unfortunately, all of Squidward’s effort is wasted, as once Howard tries to confront SpongeBob and Patrick, he gets corrupted by their “idiocy” too. I wouldn’t actually call it idiocy, rather an earnest love of life, but that’s how Squidward sees it, because he’s miserable LMAO. And of course, Squidward can only handle SpongeBob and Patrick in his life, so Howard’s got to go. And go he does, as Squidward knocks his house off the cliff, and Howard goes diving like the rest. The ending of the episode is hilarious, as it seems happiness is forever out of reach for Squidward, as he is unable to pop a single bubble, and soon he’s the one diving off a cliff.

“New Fish in Town” was a pretty good episode. Yeah, it uses a plot structure I’m not a fan of, but other than that, I really enjoyed everything it had to offer. It’s also a very understated episode, taking place in just one location, and having pretty subdued humor compared to other episodes of this season. It stands out that way, which is funny because I’d consider this episode to be very much forgotten.
