How I Discovered Spongebob
When I was growing up, we only had five television channels. No Nickelodeon, no kids' channels; my parents wouldn't even let me and my brothers watch the small selection of cartoons that were available after school. We were very sheltered from "pop culture".
The first time I heard of Spongebob Squarepants was when I was about 11 years old (2002/2003?). I was at my next door neighbour's house (he also happened to be my best friend) and we were sat at the dining room table drawing pictures. He showed me his drawing and said, "Look, it's Spongebob."
I had no idea what he was talking about.
"What's Spongebob?"
His whole family was stunned. That was when I saw my first few episodes - they turned the TV on and we stayed sat in front of it for hours, watching Spongebob. It was the start of a
