Yeah. Technically they're just remaking it in HD
 
Are they really remaking the original title sequence for HD, using the original cels? I'd love it if that was true.
 
I love these drawings and studying them. I also never knew the extreme close up shots were hand painted. Wow. Also glad to hear they'll just be rescanning/coloring them in HD. And technically they're not sketches, they're the actual animation frames. The process of cel animation to my knowledge is taking the animation drawing and copying it onto a cel using xerox, and then coloring in the outlines using paint.

I'm pretty sure SpongeBob was hand-inked, not xeroxed.

Go buy the Blu-Ray of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs or a volume of Looney Tunes Platinum Collection. There's nothing unsettling about it.

I think it's going to have to be redrawn frame by frame, though? Even if they have the original cels, they weren't made to fit in widescreen. I'm not positive, but I'll be interested to see.

It seems to me, that they could just crop the images.

They might be able to, but it could end up looking weird. I think it'd be better to add to the sides than to take away from the top and bottom, which they'd have to do to crop it.

One of the cheap-o Looney Tunes releases cropped the cartoons to widescreen and it didn't look good. There'd be times where a character's head wasn't even visible and stuff.

Update: Actually, it turns out I was wrong, but I'm happy to be. They will be using the original cels, not just basing it on the original art! :D

This should have been what The Simpsons did way back when they went widescreen. It was too late to change it by the time they did. Glad SpongeBob's doing it. :)
 
Me: So it'll still be 4x3, since the original cels were made in 4x3? (I assume)

Vincent: We will scan, and then create the extra extended art for the HD titles.


This pleases me.

Also could someone post the rest of the sketches in the thread? I only see 1 from mobile Twitter.
