A while ago I made a long post analyzing the character of Mister Krabs, and how radically his personality changed from season 2 to season 3.

I looked closely at some pitch bible images, and I found this sketch of Mister Krabs and Spongebob:

In the upper right hand corner, Krabs has his arm around Spongebob, who's smiling. They look pretty happy.

My original post was about the more sympathetic characterization of Mister Krabs in seasons 1 and 2

compared to how revoltingly callous he started acting in season 3

After seeing that image from the pitch bible, I'm wondering... whose idea was it to have Mister Krabs become more villainous in season 3-ish? Was it Hillenburg's? Was his character originally planned to be mostly sympathetic? What happened?

I think because of flanderization/character derailment. It can happen unconsciously or for the sake of comedy. His more "villainous" appearance is kinda toned down in season 9. In my honest opinion they must use character rerailment/deflanderization (opposite of flanderization/character derailment, returning characters to their original personalities) on Mr Krabs and other flanderized characters.

Mr. Krabs was never a moral person. He learned his lessons in episodes like Krabby Land and Born Again Krabs, and learning lessons evolves you into a person, so he just had to grasp those concepts from those two episodes.

I'm not sure that they intended to make Mr. Krabs the bad guy. Maybe the writers just got carried away with ideas for how to make him seem greedy and used that to his full potential, even if he came off as a jerk at times. I think he's really a good person at heart even if his love for money gets in the way.

It's sorta like if you watch krusty love and summer job. Mr Krabs liked mrs puff better than his money is Krusty Love, but he liked money more in summer job

I don't know if it was meant to be intentional on the writers part or not, but the change in Mr. Krabs' character is quite discernible as the seasons progress.

SOOW was a perfect example (for me) of how big of a jerk he's become. Seriously, I look back on episodes like Welcome to the Chum Bucket ( ♪ THIS KITCHEN'S NOT THE SAME WITHOUT YOU~) and wonder what the hell happened. It's unfortunate, but one of the reasons why I've ultimately come to dislike Mr. Krabs. :patboo:

I miss the father-son dynamic he and SpongeBob used to have. It was so sweet!

NO. THE CLASSIC SEASONS WERE PERFECT. HOW DARE YOU.

Just kidding!

Season 3 was probably the beginning of his flanderization, and he started getting crueler : Wet Painters, Krabby Land, etc

Maybe PieGuyRulz could make a Square Theory on this....? nudgenudge

Yeah, I really liked how Krabs was like a surrogate dad to Spongebob. I mean, Spongebob's dad is awesome, but he doesn't live with his dad anymore, he's a grown adult with a job. But Spongebob's still a sensitive, naive character. I liked when Krabs would sort of act like a mentor to Spongebob, at least trying to help him learn, and actually caring about him. It was just one of those little things that made season 1 and earlier season 2 so adorable.

Mr Krabs was like a father figure to SpongeBob, I have to agree. And I found those moments to be the sweeter moments of the classic episodes.
