The Krusty Krab's design is based on that of a New England crab trap. Spongebob's pineapple... maybe it's a pineapple that fell from someone's boat at some point. Squidward's house is some kind of artifact.

The pineapple did actually fall from a boat. Watch Truth or Square

This makes no sense at all.
Well, the last one about SpongeBob sure didn't.

If Squidward's house was (Let's just have fun with this.) at one point, a luck charm?
How does that explain Squilliam's house? I doubt any fishermen would have a double
decker easter island head as a lucky charm. Because, you're an idiot to lose that!.

"Buried treasure?"

Interesting theory with some good points. Never really thought of the buildings and other stuff being trash.

I know that beyond cartoon logic, Steve Hillenburg said he designed Bikini Bottom and it buildings to be stuff that could have fallen from ships and been turned into buildings. I never tied the minor buildings to being tin cans but it makes sense. In an interview, I think Square Roots, Steve pulled out an animatronic dog that he made with metal scraps and rivets so I always thought he based the scrap metal and rivet combos that are used everywhere. The Krusty Krab was based on a lobster trap too, as was mentioned in a commentary I remember.
