So I'm starting a series of topics that are SpongeBob related. In other words, they're just normal SpongeBob topics but with "Spongy Topic" in the title.

Do you want SpongeBob to get his drivers license in a future episode? Or do you prefer it if he stays without it?

If he obtains it:
  • No more boating school episodes
  • You'll probably see him driving around
If he stays without it:
  • More boating school episodes
  • More failure ( :P )

So what do you guys think?

Definitely not. I consider his inability to drive to be an important part of his character. Or rather, the fact that he doesn't get discouraged for long and keeps trying over and over when most people would just give up.

Also, his clumsiness and anxiety over driving is funny. It's a side of him we don't get to see much elsewhere since he is so talented at his other hobbies like fry cooking, jellyfishing etc. It would be a shame if he lost that flaw and was suddenly fine at driving.

Honestly if it wasn't a rating trap it would be okay. And they kept the continuity with it.

It depends what he does with the license, whether it's normal, drag racing, BASCAR (the NASCAR parody seen in IASFV if I remember correctly) and does he really NEED IT? He has the little bike thing already so I don't see why he even needs a boat when he always walks everywhere fine and seems to have enough money for the bus, so it's in the middle for me honestly.

If he got his license, he'd probably have his license repeatedly taken away for violations- driving past red lights, running through stop signs, speeding, blowing bubbles behind the wheel, ....

If he DID get his license in one of the last episodes, I'd be so freaking happy for him, I'd probably cry. I'd be SO PROUD of the little guy!!

What if he learned to drive- but a string of rotten luck and klutziness kept getting in his way?

Running a stoplight, getting distracted behind the wheel, totalling his new boat, getting lose, getting his license taken away, driving past a stop sign, speeding, going too slow... et cetera.

Another idea- what if in the finale, there's a flash-forward to Spongebob in about ten years, and the last thing we see him do is get into his car and drive off, signifying that yes, he did indeed get his license at some point? That'd be cute.

Status quo is God. It might be annoying to hear that rule, but in a simplistic comedy show with preset plotlines like SpongeBob, it's an important rule. What the writers need to do to keep this story alive is to keep writing fresh stories.

Admittedly though, it's a hard task. To keep this plotline alive, at the very least, the writers should be able to correlate the story with SpongeBob's character. Instead of chopping and changing SpongeBob's character to suit the story they're telling.

SpongeBob can not drive because he gets ridiculously anxious behind the wheel (in a charming way). Not because he is impossibly stupid and impossibly delusional towards his inability to drive properly.

Finding the difference between the 2 extremes can keep Boating School episodes entertaining and enjoyable to watch without having to give SpongeBob his license and breaking the status quo.

Yeah, in the VERY last episode or 2nd to last episode or something like that. Of course, Spongebob's probably gonna run for like 60 more seasons, so...

He drives even without the license, there are some episodes where he drive, that one they sell grease, he's driving a truck...

But I prefer him without license, it's more fun, and we can see Mrs. Puff getting arrested :D

Yes, but only for one or two episodes then he has to earn it back. Otherwise, boating school episodes are fine as is. Keep producing those but not too many.

For me, it depends. I would like it in certain circumstances. Maybe like, in the last episode or movie. Or maybe he gets it, but violates so many rules that it's taken away in the end. Things like that. But otherwise, keep the boating school episodes coming.
