Spinoff

DadMom AngryPants

Hi, I'm normal.
This was a discussion on Popeye's status but I feel like it deserves to be a topic. Here's what's been said so far:

Popeye Q. Krabs
Do you guys think Nickelodeon would ever be desperate enough to greenlight a SpongeBob spinoff called SpongeBob Kids? It sure happened with Hanna-Barbera's shows.
Yo Yogi, Flintstone Kids, Tom and Jerry Kids, etc.

President Squidward
SpongeBob! Can you please keep it down while I play my toy clarinet!

Big Spooky Claws
Nickelodeon needs something good and something that makes money. SB = profit.
oh god i hope this doesn't happen

Popeye Q. Krabs
now i'm scared too like what happened with that Rugrats spinoff. Ugh.
and SpongeBob has lasted longer than Rugrats at this point in terms of how many episodes it has. A spin off is bound to happen someday.

DadMom AngryPants
I don't know how that could even work. Although we don't know the ages of the main characters there's obviously a big difference between, say, SB & Pat and Krabs & Plankton, so it's not like they could just de-age the whole gang and have them be kids at the same time. The only way it would really make sense is if it was about SB & Pat as little kids and Squid, Krabs and Plankton as younger but still adults.
You should have made this a topic. :P

Popeye Q. Krabs
That's what I think too. The last option would make most sense if this were to ever come into fruition.
Though I'd picture Squidward as more of teenager in this show. Maybe he could be their babysitter. :P

E.V.I.L
How would this work, though? Along with what DMAP said, SpongeBob would have never known Sandy, Krabs, or Gary. It just feels wrong to have the show centered on SOME of the characters.

Popeye Q. Krabs
I'm pretty sure they'd find a way to bend all sorts of cartoon logic to make this work or have lookalike characters like in Planet Sheen.
Cause Planet Sheen had a Carl knock off named Doppy.

DadMom AngryPants
Yes, Squidward would be a teenager or young adult I guess. Old enough to work at the KK though because we see him working there in a "Truth or Square" flashback when SB is a baby.

E.V.I.L
I know they could do that but the stubborn elitist in me just makes it seem awful for SB to not know Sandy, Plankton, Gary, or Krabs personally.
I hope a spin-off never happens, let's put it that way. xD

Popeye Q. Krabs
Yup me too but seeing as how Nickelodeon has been with so many of their hit shows, I wouldn't be surprised if something like this became a spinoff.

E.V.I.L
I'm VERY shocked it hasn't happened yet. I'd probably rather have SB cancelled.

Popeye Q. Krabs
They would probably have to cancel SpongeBob itself first and then come up with a spinoff. That's my guess.
Then they can air a billion replays of Spongebob and have the episodes air right before the new episodes of Spongebob Kids.

DadMom AngryPants
The fact that there hasn't needed to be a spin-off yet is a testament to the strength of the characters and setting IMO. They haven't even felt the need to add a new main character (thank Neptune).

Popeye Q. Krabs
That is very true DMAP. Too bad Nickelodeon wouldn't understand that if they decided to make this big mistake.

E.V.I.L
@DMAP YES YES YES YES
SpongeBob is so different from Tom and Jerry or other Hanna-Barbara shows. Those shows have a few characters we don't know much about and characters who don't even have a FIXED SETTING.
In SpongeBob, we have
-7 main characters we've come to love
-many recurring we've come to love
-a diverse setting with many familiar and not so familar locations yet to be explored
-the ties between the characters overrule a Tom and Jerry simp...

Popeye Q. Krabs
I still kinda think a Kelpy G spinoff COULD work but it would have to be completely distinct from the show itself.

OH MY GOD THANK YOU DMAP

anyways, to complete my post lel

-SpongeBob already has his life settled in THIS BIKINI BOTTOM

I just... I can't see how a "baby spinoff" or "Sam and Cat"-like show would work. (besides, Sam and Cat=FAIL) The setting, mood, and character relationships have been so put into place--especially with FIFTEEN years of airtime--that not even "That Sinking Feeling" could bring those roots back out.

I will have more points but I'll respond to those as yall respond. :)

Honeslty, I wouldn't be shocked if the spin-off leads to the cancellation. Rugrats spin-off (preschool) was a FAIL; All Grown Up did well though but that made more sense in context.

I don't think SpongeBob overkill will help Nickelodeon, and from the looks of it, even Spongey is letting the channel fall with the rather low viewcount. (it could be dure to school, but i doubt it because who stops watching tv due to school lol?)

An episode with a cameo from Squilliam. Squidward trying to hide the fact that he's babysitting because he doesn't want Squilliam to know that he needs the money. Yes ... yes, this could work. :P

I kind of want to see this now. It would be cute.

This would be very cute and I don't even mean this in a Squidiam way, but a legit "this sounds like an amazing SB flashback plot episode!" DMAP conformed Squiidam

Haha. Cool, this was made into it's own topic. :)

I always see dumb ideas for spin-offs in SpongeBob fanon wikis, usually that center around a main character, a recurring character or the old cast with new characters. No matter what format they try to put it in, a SpongeBob spin-off won't work.

HOWEVER, they could possibly make an episode featuring SB kids (I mean, there's Goo Goo Gas, but baby-fied SB and friends didn't really do anything). They've done episodes barely featuring the main characters themselves, and instead show other incarnations of the characters (Ugh, Pest of the West, SB-129, and Bad Guy Club for Villains, kinda.) A entire baby-fied episode of the show could work, and be funny, especially since the babies would have little knowledge of the world around them :)

Is it weird I've imagined Squidward as a babysitter for them before. Maybe one episode of this would be nice, but not a spin-off. The main show has little premise as it is, so the plots them as Kids might be clique.

The Day Kare Krab!

If Squidward babysitted them, he would look very tired with bags under his eyes. xD While I find that to be an interesting episode, a spinoff isn't necessary for the show.

And considering SpongeBob and Patrick already act like little kids I'm not sure how different a show with them physically younger would be anyway. They already regularly do episodes about kid problems like shoe tying, fighting over a toy, being afraid of the dark and so on. And SpongeBob already has a school setting. By making him younger all you'd do is further limit episode possibilities because it would remove the setting of him working at the Krusty Krab.

One of the things that makes SpongeBob (the show) unique is that they can already cover this wide range of stories due to the protagonist's child-like personality. We don't need SpongeBob: Rugrats Edition or yet another show about kids in school.

Oh, the idea of Squidward babysitting them is hilarious! I love it!
And the cameo from Squilliam, with Squidward trying to hide that he's actually doing it for money, would just add to the hilariousness! It would make a really good episode.
I so wanna see teens Squidward and Squilliam. :squilliam: They just better remember that Squidward had hair (well, I hope they would, even though it seems something the writers like to forget about in other episodes). I'd want Squilliam to have hair too (I always think of it being black, like his unibrow).

As for a spin-off, I dunno.. never really thought much about it before, but some of the ideas are quite interesting.

I imagine teenage Squidward having terrible acne as well. Sorry, Squidward.

(Oh... that wasn't the Squilliam emoticon I was expecting, LOL!!! - But I'll leave it because it makes my statement kinda funny if you take it as Squill's critique on it.)

OH, yes! I could totally see that!
