Via USA Today:

The classic underwater animated character SpongeBob SquarePants has come out of the water at last. He's hitting the beach — and he's buff to boot.

In this exclusive first look at the upcoming movie SpongeBob: Sponge Out of Water (due out Feb. 13, 2015) the main cast gets a new "real" look once they leave their animated sea city of Bikini Bottom.

"It's a bold new world where no Sponge has gone before. I'm still getting used to it," says Tom Kenny, who has voiced SpongeBob for 17 years. "You've seen someone in a certain way for so long... It's just really different."

The character's zany personality remains the same in this second movie installment for the long-running Nickelodeon television franchise — Kenny still voices SpongeBob even with his new look which comes late in the movie.

"It's not like SpongeBob has gone through any personality rewiring, there's no reboot. Daniel Craig will not be voicing him," says Kenny. "It's just a very different likeness."

The team even transforms to computer graphic superheroes to fight off a menace endangering beloved Bikini Bottom.

Patrick Star turns into Mr. Superawesomeness, SpongeBob Squarepants becomes The Invincibubble, Squidward Tentacles is Sour Note and Mr. Krabs turns into Sir Pinch-A-Lot.

"It's the big climax of the movie," says director Paul Tibbit. "They all come to shore in our world. And they transform themselves into an Avengers-type team to do battle. Their world is in jeopardy."

Not that they look to be a serious crime fighting team going forward.

"I don't know if these guys could take out Thor and The Hulk, but they might give them a run for their money," says Tibbit.

The team needs to deal with the threat of Antonio Banderas, who plays a villainous pirate in the movie. "He's got a great comedy touch," says Kenny. "And we've seen him in Zorro. He really knows how to swash a buckle. If there were pirates today, he would definitely pass as one."

The Sponge Out of Water crew will be at Comic-Con in San Diego on Thursday to show off the new-look superhero characters and footage from the movie.

Kenny believes fans will be excited, but he's ready for some shocked reactions too.

"There a thin line between a riot and a paroxysm of joy," he says. "Either way, it's Comic-Con and it's always good to have your escape route planned."

If they look like that in the Movie CGI, i'll be happy.

Tho it still would've been cooler if they were the IJLSA superheroes, but whatever.

Well.. that pic is definitely not what I was expecting lol
Comic Con announcement was obviously going to happen... should have just taken summer classes so I could be there.

The real question is how Patrick got a six pack while retaining all that fat.
SpongeBob's clearly been doing a lot of armpit fart noises

They actualy look kinda cool. And at least we know the live action stuff will be the climx of the film so I guess the majority of the film will be 2D. Man I just hope the live action stuff isn't too stupid like most other live action/CGI adaptations.
And I guess we may get a trailer later today.

THESE MODELS ARE AWESOME! I love SB's little bubbe wand hat (heh if only he had Smitty's bubble hat) and of course Squidward will do damage to the bad guys by playing his clarinet.

Good to know that it's the movie's climax. It probably means that most of the movie is in 2D, and that's the big ending. I can really see it happening, and it gives me hopes.

Squidward looks very determined in this pic, I would have just thought he would have been offended that his superhero name was "Sour Note" :p

This looks promising. I like it,

...Okay, there's a little more to it...

I mean it sounds really stupid, but it has potential. At least if executed correctly, it would look refreshing and edgy.

But at least it's just the climax. Not that it's not a problem since the climax IS the most important part of any movie. But hopefully the rest of the movie won't be this prospectively numb.

Wow... it doesn't look that bad! I think it's good! :D

Sour Note Squidward kind of reminds me of one of those CGI mascots from a Japanese commercial :P

I wonder if SpongeBob will get to use his heroic voice for example when he says "I can't let my heroes down" or "defender of evil".

They look quite nice. I'm not sure what type of models people were expecting for a children's movie.

I like the way the CGI looks here more than the poster, but ... yeeeah. I can't honestly say I think it looks good.

I am relieved that the superhero forms still look like the characters. The descriptions of SpongeBob looking more “grown up” and human-like had me picturing a creepy middle-aged man with a block-shaped head. This is still SpongeBob, at least. In fact he looks like he did in "The Fry Cook Games". I like that his superpower is bubbles. It's almost nostalgic since they barely mention bubbles in episodes nowadays.

They're definitely focusing on the CGI, which is frustrating because now people are going to get the false impression that the whole movie is animated this way. I'm dreading the inevitable influx of negative reactions. The internet is not going to be kind to CGI-Bob. I get that Paramount is promoting the gimmick but holy shrimp I wish they'd show us some of the traditional, hand-drawn animation that most of the movie apparently consists of. You'll show some in the trailer today, right, Paramount? Right?

Overall I'm feeling neutral. I mentally prepared myself for something truly atrocious, just in case, but it's not as bad as I feared ... so far.

i can agree with you when it comes to the peoples reactions. people see the word spongebob and they already go "OH BLAH BLAH" and with this? oh the publicity and reports will be insane. i like it. its not perfect but i like it. it gives me a original avenger-ish mocking feel which i find funny.

They all look pretty good! Spongebob doesn't have the giant cheeks, Patrick doesn't look too dumb, Mr. Krabs looks a lot like Robot Krabs, and Squidward is, well...
... even more handsome!
