We first had a topic about this in January, and 6 months later AJR's song named after and featuring SpongeBob's catchphrase, “I'm Ready”, is gaining momentum. The SpongeBob sample is actually licensed by Nickelodeon, in case you were wondering.

On the Verge: AJR gets 'Ready' for the big time

They're ready: AJR is riding a SpongeBob SquarePants sample up the charts this summer. One of the Nickelodeon cartoon character's catchphrases is featured prominently in the sibling trio's ebullient breakout hit, I'm Ready. Now No. 30 on USA TODAY's top 40 airplay chart, I'm Ready has sold close to 350,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan — not bad for a song that Ryan Met started writing in his Columbia University dorm, then finished and recorded with his brothers in the living room of their home. Soon after, the brothers licensed the sample from Nickelodeon. "They probably didn't think it was going to be a huge hit," Ryan says. "So we got a pretty good deal."

Question: How can they sample SpongeBob and expect to be taken seriously?

Don't get me wrong, I love SpongeBob (otherwise I wouldn't be on this forum or call myself SBManiac!!!!!! @_@), but it just seems like an odd choice to use in a pop song that would supposedly get played on the radio. The rest of the song isn't bad, either, but the "I'm ready! I'm ready!" sample really takes me out of it (and these lyrics make me think these guys have the hots for SB...seriously, WTF o.o). Maybe if the song was actually about SpongeBob, it could work, but as it is, it's really more of a novelty than anything else. At least they're capable of singing and writing and performing their own material, I'll give them that.
This is why I'm not the head executive of a record label. :P
I didn't think this song was going to go anywhere, but never underestimate the power of nostalgic teenagers and young adults, I guess.

EDIT: lol, the video already has over 3,000,000 views on YouTube, so I guess it was a self-fulfilling prophecy. Also, either AJR or their video director is an Adventure Time fan because a Finn plushie can be seen a couple times in the video.

I heard this on Pandora, and I thought it was pretty cool that they used SpongeBob's voice. The song isn't to bad itself.

I doubt it will be used, since the song itself doesn't actually have anything to do with SpongeBob.

I'd rather they keep the trailers theatrical and a bit more timeless. They used Avril Lavigne in some of the first movie's TV spots, but that was different because it was a version of the theme song so it still sounds fine 10 years later even if you don't know who she is.

She's Canadian though which still great.
