Yesterday, GMTV ended for the final time. GMTV held the national ITV Breakfast license. Last year though, ITV PLC bought the remaining 25% share of the company from The Walt Disney Company who provided childrens programming from the Disney Channel on weekends.
It's been on since 1993, going for 17 years, after it outbid the previous (and first) ITV Breakfast license holder, TV-AM.
It has made stars of Eamonn Holmes, Penny Smith, Ben Shephard, Andrew Castle, Kate Garraway, Richard Arnold, John Stapleton, Lorraine Kelly... the list goes on.
However after the phone-in scandal of 2007 the show has never had the same reputation. Ratings have fallen to an all-time low of 900,000. But ITV could not cancel or drastically change the show as it did not have full control over it. Technically, GMTV was still a completely separate TV station to ITV, just broadcasting on the same channel. With no full control, it was obvious that the GMTV brand would never change.
But with the poaching of Christine Bleakley and Adrian Chiles, and with full control of the programme, ITV set about rebranding the programme 'Daybreak'. The new programme starts Monday at 6am. Most of the old presenters have been redeployed as correspondents, with some like Ben Shephard and Penny Smith choosing to leave beforehand.
So, after 17 years of warm cheery starts in the cold cold British winter mornings (and summer mornings) GMTV came to an end, quietly and with pretty much no mention of the end and no ending montage as the new ITV management made sure there was no fuss.
Goodbye, Good Morning Television. Thanks for the fun mornings. Thanks for the last 17 years.
I've just finished the last book in the comic series and it's epic. I heartily recommend that everyone reads it and join me in my pants-jizzing state to see this movie.
Just thought I'd tell you guys about this. If you hate The X Factor/Idol series, then hopefully you'll like this. Must Be The Music is a talent show that welcomes original musicians who play instruments and make their own songs. The judges are also real talent as well, and if you're from the UK/ROI you should have heard of at least two of them (because unfortunately I had never heard of Jamie): Jamie Caullum, Dizzee Rascal and Sharleen Spiteri. Sharleen Spiteri is the lead singer of the band Texas, which I hope you've heard of. Dizzee Rascal is a sort of hip-hop/rap artist. But I don't want to give you the wrong impression of them so I think you should watch their music videos if you want to know what their music is like and what they are like.
It's showing in the UK on Sky1 and Sky1 HD. And judging from the show which features ROI phone numbers and phone companies (e.g. "It's only 5p if you're on a BT landline or 7 cents if you are an Eircom landline") it's also showing in the ROI, but I'm not sure if ROI also has Sky1 or if it's showing on a different channel like RTE. I think it's Sky1 though because that's what Wiki says and I can't find any trace of it being shown on another network.
The prize at the end is £100,000 and a gig at Wembley Arena. You can also actually buy the songs of the 5 of the final 15 semi-finalists who performed on Sunday's live show now on iTunes UK and Sky Songs for 59p, and all of the profit goes straight to the artist. Sky doesn't get a penny. Another five will perform this Sunday, and then again next Sunday.
The last series of Big Brother UK starts tonight. The twist this time is that 80 people will be there and somehow they'll have to do something to get in the house. I am definitely not a fan of the new titles. Hate them.
Um, where do I begin...I'm not gonna explain what the movie is about because a) it's HARD, it's been out for a while, and c) hpoefully, you've seen it by now. So, I'm gonna ask right off the bat, what did you think about the movie?
I can easily say it's one of the best movies of the year and it's downright imaginative and clever. In the past years, we've only ended up with blockbusters based off famous licenses, but we finally get an original idea from Christopher Nolan. I'm surprised the word on this movie has gotten out very well and that everyone is seeing the movie.
Now for those who haven't seen the film, I suggest you watch it. RIGHT NOW. It's a totally new experience. Though remember, please stay CLOSE attention to the movie. Don't go wondering off by even a second, or you might miss out on something important. I did for a few scenes, and almost didn't get the ending. It's not a confusing movie, as long as you're ready to think.
